HD/DVD Installer for Under A Killing Moon

Last edited by Wintermute on August 07, 2006 • 7:22 am, edited 6 times in total.
I patched the starting files for the adventure game Under A Killing Moon, so that it can be run from a DVD instead of several CDs.
In order to make things a little bit easier, I created an installer for creating a DVD version of this game. In addition, it also allows you to install the whole game directly to your hard disc.
I hope you guys will like it!

Features:

- Option to make a full installation on the hard drive and play without any CDs
- or Create a DVD version, so that you can play later directly from the DVD without the need of changing CDs
- Full Installation can also be started later on from the DVD
- Original CDs can be inserted in any disc drive(s). (The correct CDs are recognised automatically)
- Support for English and German version of the game
- Bilingual (German & English) - language depends on the Windows version of your PC

All needed Infos are covered in the file DVDInfo.txt, which will be displayed at the start of the installation.

I tested the program thoroughly, but please report any possible errors (also major grammar errors - since English is not my mother tongue ) in order to correct them. Further comments are welcomed.
If there shouldn't arise any more major errors, I'll soon publish the installer for The Pandora Directive.

Download (Update v1.3):

Have fun!!!
Here is a small update (v1.1)
The changes only apply to the German version of the game: Using the old installer some ingame texts (like the inventory, hints or letters) changed to English. Furthermore there appeared to be some problems with special characters and full installation of the game.

Should you have the English version of UAKM you don't need this update.

If someone has the game in another language besides English and German, and want to have added support for it, please write me a PN.
Again a very small update:

The needed disk space, when installing later from the DVD was calculated incorrectly. Furthermore I made some small changes to the Info files.

At least the upcoming installer for Pandora also profits from these changes.
Hi Wintermute!

I just tried to download your installer, but I couldn't get it working. First of all - it calculated the final DVD to 12 GB and secondly when it asked for CD 1, I put in CD 1 in my CD/DVD drive, but it wouldn't accept it. I could only press "Cancel" and go out of the installation. I'm using either J: og K: as my CD/DVD-drives. Any way you could check into this? Thanks

Wow, how many drives do you use in your computer?
I never assumed, that someone would use so many drive letters. So as matter of fact, the installer only checks the drives until the letter I: (tough luck for you, isn't it )
But I will change the detection code to a more general approach.

About the disk space: I Know, where the problem is, and I will look how to fix this. But this is minor, since the installer will work anyway.

By the way: Both problems will also apply for the Installer for "The Pandora Directive."
Well, I have 7 drives from C to I. I like having the possibility to store different items on different drives, so I can find it easier. Also - the drives are between 20 and 50 GB each which is quite fine for me. But unfortunately my CD/DVD-drives ARE place on drive J and K, so I can't do much about that.

Is it a tough task to change the detection to L or M or some other letter, so I can get to burn the DVD. I would really love to be able to do it, so I can't wait to download the "new" version of your installer.

Btw ... great initiative! Really appreciate it!

So here is another Update v1.3: I rewrote parts of the detection routine, so it should now search for available CD-Rom Drives instead of guessing.

The needed disk space should now be displayed correctly also.

@netroam: It would have been faster, if I just would have changed the letters like you suggested, but then sooner or later someone else would have had the same problem as you - only with different letters.

So now you could use every drive letter available for you CD-Roms - even Z:\ if you want. :D
Hi Wintermute!

This one worked corectly for me! No probs when try to use the DVD version to play the game. I had a problem with the Pandora installer (please check the other thread)

Thanks!

This has also timed out on Rapidshare so I've hosted the V1.3 update on my site.

Wintermute, it's your call if you want it to stay there or not!
