New Developments?

Hey members of the Tex Murphy board!

I didn't want to go trough all the posts to find out if there are any new developments regarding TM! I admit that's a bit lazy though!

But are there any? Or are we all waiting for something that's never gonna happen! That's what I am afraid of... And that's a sad thing, nowadays with all the new technology's and possiblity's a great TM game could be created!

When I was a student I used to work in a computer shop and we used TM UAKM to show our clients and visitors what computers were really capable of in those days! That allways worked very amazingly, I sold many PC's with a TM game! But not enough it seems

Sometimes it feels like a lot of good things end. I am also a great fan of Startrek. But since the last series "enterprise" discontinued no new series are planned for production. :(

But, there is no point to my historical indulgence! I am just dissapointed how some things are developing...

Maybe someone can bring me up to speed on some positive developments.

First, welcome to the Tex Murphy international community. We love new members!

Second, Tex is on hold, but all is not lost. CJ, AC and AC would love to create a new Tex adventure, but many things block the path to fruition. However, we are always in touch with those chaps and they visit here often. We also have a saying: "Keep the faith!"

In the interim, feel free to post often and share ideas, thoughts and techno stuff as you like.

Thanks for the news.

I agree that there are many things that block the path to the creation of a new TM game.

However the largest blockade in my opinion is money! If you fit the TM concept in a sort of new game media format were for example marketing (in-game advertisement) plays a large role you might be able to create a feasible business concept that would be compatible with venture capital funding.

But that of course takes up a lot of time (and again money) and takes very experienced people in all sorts of disciplines. And as I read through the board I see that people like CJ and AC are busy making money for them selves which is normal.

In holland we say; what was or is there first, the chicken or the egg!

I never thought of that but with all the Links LS references would that be a feasable option for the PC? Like seeing a Coca Cola billboard when the speeder drives by or Tex: Pedigree dog food. A little gamey but not bad for the price.
I will state right here and now that if there came a new Tex Murphy game, and it had tons of commercials and product placements in it, I would personally tell the creators of that game to go f*** themselves.

Commercials and product placements are the worst thing EVER to happen to the entertainment industry.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Dear Fred,

I am so sorry to hear that!

Of course I agree that overall the intensifying advertising through games, televison, internet and cell phones is not at all totally positive.

On the other hand, if this would be a way to bring Tex back to life. In light of a new game. I couldn't be more happy, even with the advertisments!!!

Are their more people who have a vision???

Yeah same here Jasper as long as its subtly moderate its a small price to pay.
I would hope that Tex would live on through novels, text adventures, whatever other option there is compared to having to sit through scenes where Tex is eating or drinking some well-known or other product.

Product placement, to me, is one of the greatest evils to hit the Art of Story Telling. It detracts from it, makes it less than perfect. And Tex is one of the few stories I know that always has been perfect as is.

It's like... Would you marry a woman that is 'just' plain cute, but would love you dearly and be faithful to you and make you happy for the rest of your life? Or would you marry the super-model with the super-hot body that would cheat on you and make your life miserable forever?

Just a metaphor.

Fred... if you hate product placement you would hate to see the direction modern games are headed (if you haven't already seen the extent)...

You see, some games, one in particular being 'Battlefield 2042' actually comes with an extra software component which collects information about the user during everyday computer usage (net browsing, gaming, etc.) and then sends this information to a database which then synchronises the "live" advertisments within the game with the products the software has determined to be within the user's best interest.

E.g. If a user surfs sunglasses on the web, the software would monitor this, and then when you play the game the billboards in the virtual cities would display real advertisments from existing sunglasses companies. Now, although this is product placement to the extreme you have to admit it is pretty cool... but still, I agree, it's just not cricket to take it that far, considering you are already paying a motza for the game.

They say the benefits could go as far as enabling a user to see a pizza advertisment in a game and order a Large Peperroni Cheese pizza in the game itself in one of the virtual stores and have it actually delivered to you home (in real life that is) without having to leave the game.

Advertising gone mad, or advertisers catering to a gaming community gone mad? You decide really.

It wouldnt be that bad. Access have already done this but just for their own games. No more Llamas and Baby Rums it could be the real deal.
I can't stand product placement. I am so glad that we don't get half the adverts the Americans do - nothing against the Americans of course, they just seem to have adverts every few minutes on tv. I just really appreciate having the BBC with no adverts in shows - you get far more into what you watch.

Here in the UK it is so much nicer to watch programs without adverts - like when 24 was shown in the uk on bbc 2 - no adverts
When X files was first shown - no adverts

The worst example I think I've seen was I Robot with Will Smith and all the things - even the whole stuff about his ultra cool 2004 converse boots - which had nothing at all to do with the plot of the movie, so why so much dialogue about them? I hated it. No matter how good a tex story it would be ruined for me if it was full of product placement like that.
Too true David. The first time I remember obvious product placement was in the movie Total Recall. Now it such that shows that are rerun in syndication often have MORE of the show cut out so they can squeeze more ads in.
I don't like watching movies on TV anymore because by the last 25% of it they are constantly breaking it up for commercials. They figure, they've got you now, you're going to stick around to see the end. Tivo helps a TON! I hardly watch any planned shows without it. But spur of the moment watching, grr.
What I REALLY hate is when during the movie credits on TV when they squash them away to fit in ads!

It used to be halkf the screen credits and hald the screen ads... notw its 1/4 screen credits and 3/4 screen ads! I cannot think of anything more disrespectful than trating film credits like that, with all those people that put so much work into making a film, and you can't even read them!

Yeah, this is what I really like to see when I am watching the credits of Schindler's List: "Feeling Good!?? You should be becuase The OC is back! Marissa is now sleeping with her brothers friend, who was in jail, but now got out and is sleeping with her mum who is actually in love with her friends mother, but she does not know. Meanwhile, does seth have a secret Alf fantasy with Summer? And will the superbitch bite back, when she finds out her daughter is sleeping with her new boyfriend, who is actually a confused gay man? All that an more on the OC!"

(as you can see I can't stand The OC in particular, girls will watch this and have the nerve to tell me that Total Recall is unrealistic... it's least Total Recall doesn't claim to be).

Now this is getting interesting guys!

Take a pick out of the following:

Your answer = No, I will not buy or support a game with Tex with product placements, like Camels instead of Lama's or even with "crazy" features as Cubase elaborated about. And with this choice I totally accept the pure fact that never another Tex game will hit the market

Your answer= Yes, I do want a new Tex game and I will accept the fact that there will be advertorials or product placements (all over the place)

:)
"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail"
YES!

But let me be straight forward with you! For years my monthly paycheck was covered through working @ an advertising agency! Today my corebusiness is telecom, but also there I am active for the marketing department! So I can't be against advertisement can I?

On the other hand. I agree that a game should absolutely not be interrupted by a commercial break, like on television. I do like the in game advertisement though and I think they are really acceptable. When you drive/fly your speeder through the city you see advertisements on bill boards. Or if you hear that familiar "you have a fax" You can see an ad for the new Apple Powerbook.

Also, regarding advertisements a process has been started that cannot be stopped. Have you seen minority report, that will be the near future I am afraid! Or law has got to do something about it! But then again also the politicians need money.
