Take Two, I hope you lose your flippin shirt!!!
From the parent company that dissolved Indie Built in SLC.
My opinion is not about violence in video games, it's that I'm still pissed off at Take 2 for disbanding the guys.
Got from Yahoo.

Players of the video game "Manhunt 2" would have assumed the role of a scientist with amnesia who escapes from an asylum and then goes on a bloody killing spree as he tries to remember his past. But consumers may never see it on store shelves.
Following bans by Britain and Ireland, as well as a ratings predicament that would have made it nearly impossible to buy in the United States, publisher Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. decided that it might already be game over for "Manhunt 2."
etc etc etc

Since games have age ratings I don't see the point of banning anything, anyone over a certain age and classified as a mature adult or whatever should be allowed to decide for themselves. Why on earth was it banned in Britain etc. rather than giving it 18+ rating? (I have all the Silent Hills and notice they got 18+ rating, at least on Silent Hill 4 anyway). I suppose its because Take Two refused? They say in the article they didn't want to limit their audience to 17 and over (but if so, they should of probably researched what the restrictions are for letting it fly under the limit. I'm sure there must be some documentation somewhere for that kind of thing e.g. "No dismembering of old grannies" or some such thing. If not then there should be). Its possible the ratings are too restrictive though in which case I can sympathise with them, but I have no knowledge of the restrictions so I can't really say how easy it would of been for them to get the rating they wanted. But still I wonder why it would get banned (with torture films like Saw in mainstream cinema etc.), I think it could of been due to a disagreement somewhere down the line about the ratings. 18+ should be fine enough, they should just appeal that it gets that rating, and they shouldn't worry too much about it limiting their audience. As long as the kid has an adult with them, they should be allowed to buy the game with an adult's consent. Besides that I'm assuming alot of game stores probably let things slide, especially smaller ones and second-hand places.
(For the record, I didn't have plans to buy it so it doesn't affect me)

While that would be completely awesome, and I would most definitely play it; I'm not sure where it would continue from the original considering the ending.Bjyman wrote:Take Two needs to make Black Dahlia 2.
Plus, could we really expect a sequel to live up to the original? Especially in today's world of FMV games?

Black Dahlia 2 would be cool. But I guess they would have to make it a whole new story with similar themes. I can't remember exactly what the final theme was (like with Tex Murphy it kind of went onto all sorts of tangents until the finale). But the whole Nazi occult stuff could have alot of other stories. The title would be less relevant though if it didn't use that crime as a starting point although it was never particularly relevant anyway since it soon steered away from that.

The only problem with the ratings system here is that the 18+ rating here, while appropriate, is looked at as an evil rating by most major game distributors ... Wal-Mart, Target, and many more major distributors won't even carry AO (Adults Only) games, so it if your game is rated as such, you may have the right to sell it, but nobody wants to sell it for you.Sai wrote:Since games have age ratings I don't see the point of banning anything, anyone over a certain age and classified as a mature adult or whatever should be allowed to decide for themselves. For that matter, I think I could name on one hand how many games that are out there that have this US rating of AO, simply because nobody wants to make a game that they can't sell. It's sad really.

Ah I see. I understand now then, thanks for the insight. That's a silly situation though. The shops should realise that higher ratings will probably just mean kids are more likely to get it so they can see what they're 'not allowed' to see. And those with the ability to get it will probably be curious too.
Its very strange that 18+ rated films are an every day thing and games are treated differently. I guess because you have more of a direct involvement in what happens in a game its inevitable it will be treated a little different. But being scared to carry/receive a 18+ seems extreme
Not sure what the situation is like in the UK. Alot of the time I buy online or a second-hand games store.
