DOS-Box Weekend
On this long Thanksgiving weekend (Canada) I decided to do something a little different and break out every old DOS game that I still kept around and try to mess around with DOS Box. My sister and I recently moved in to the same house so we wanted to take a trip down memory lane. We started with The 7th Guest.

I used to love this game back in the day. I cannot say the same any longer. I found it quite annoying and repetitive. I still had the glowing sense of nostalgia from playing it again but my impatience got the better of me so we moved onto the next game. Full Throttle.

I used to love this game and remember playing the demo over and over again. I was really hoping it was as good as I had remembered. I LOVED it! It was a little slow in places but everything still held up like I had remembered. We actually played the game from beginning to end in about 5 hours and enjoyed it all the way through. I really wish they didn't cancel the sequel. Next up we decided to blow off the dust on some old floppy disk games. Duke Nukem was next. (Before 3D)

This game I remember was quite fun. It was the only series that I had felt reproduced the fun I had on the original Nintendo Entertainment System. At least I thought that back then. Alas this game too became boring and nothing more than a fond memory as I found it more annoying to play than fun. We moved onto the original Prince of Persia next.

I really wanted to play this old game and got it to work but without sound and I couldn't control anything so I just closed it and moved on to Test Drive 3.

I was never really big on this game but my sister and best friend LOVED this game so she and I played it for her and she laughed at how much the game had aged and the fact that she STILL enjoyed playing it. Next up was another game that I never enjoyed yet friend and sister did, was Quarantine.

We got this game to work with sound but the game played so damn fast that it was actually unplayable. I even changed the speed of the emulation and it was STILL too fast. After we gave up on that I decided to give Scorched Earth a try.
This game ate up a lot of my high school free time on the computers. It was a simple game about 2 tanks (or more) battling one another. It was simple, fun, and worked great after all these years. I couldn't believe that it was still fun. Even my sister got a kick out of it. We must have played it for about 2 hours. After we battled it out for a few hours we decided to play the original Civilization.

I remember spending SO many hours playing this game. It was so revolutionary back in the day. However after playing it also has not aged well. I still had fun playing it and that awesome sense of nostalgia, but I have played many newer games that just do it better now. Especially the original Age of Empires. YES I liked that game more which is like blasphemy to some but I don't care. I loved AOE and even the music that played during the game.
Hmmm speaking of which I think I will try that next. I wonder if I can find that CD. Not to mention I still can't find the System Shock or Day of the Tentacle games. OH DOOM I definately have to try that again. Well the weekend isn't over yet so I'll let you know how all that goes. How could I forget Doom?

Wow. Looks like a lot of fun.
As it relates to doom, I played it again not too long ago, and there was one thing that bugged me that didn't really bother me back then, and it's the lack of a look up or down button. I basically just aim on one axis and shoot. It's amazing how that one issue has totally rendered the game unplayable to me anymore.

I'm not fat ... I'm festively plump.
You can get a mod for Doom to enable you to use the mouse to look much like modern shooters, ad it works very well... forget what it is called, but you can jump and do all that stuff as well... Google it.Mr. Thomas Malloy wrote:Wow. Looks like a lot of fun.

Also, somethins is odd with one of those full throttle shots (the green streaks on the road?)... maybe it is just in the screenie.

I most heartily agree! I replayed it not too long ago, and even more recently, caught a good chunk of the story scenes posted on You Tube. Damn, that game was engaging. I was crushed when they canceled the sequel. I've even got an old "Corley motors" T shirt, and the CD by the Gone Jackals on my Ipod (psudeo soundtrack.)Fred Buer wrote:Full Throttle remains one of the greatest games of all time.

Stu, that sounds like such a fun thing to do!!! I've got all my CD's too. Phanstmagoria would for sure be another one I bust out, and GK 1.
Duke nukem.....gawd, I remember that one. Anyone ever play the Aliens Doom mod? Wolfenstein 3D would be another one to play. My 1st really obsessed with game.

Phriggin' Phantasmagoria! What a Phantastic game, eh? I replayed it about 6 months ago during my yearly nostalgia phase along with The X-Files and Full Throttle. I gotta say that Phantasmagoria is one of the creepiest most gruesome, yet engaging games I've played to this day, a true runner up to TM...?! OK, the acting is a little shoddy, but I have a certain weakness towards old Victorian Mansion-Themed Horror-Stories. You can find many of the cutscenes on YouTube, but I suggest you have a strong stomach should you check them out (assuming you haven't seen them before). A great way to kick off that Halloween Spirit

Next time around, you should try Under a Killing Moon. I think it was made by Microsoft. The hero is a gumshoe with a forgettable sort of name (I think it was Rook something-or-other). Anybody remember that one? That was a pretty good game.

I have no idea what you're talking about Jerry. Asunder A Filling Toon? Was that what you said it was? And a gumshoe? Was it based on the Pink Panther movies or something? Or did you mean the character was addicted to chewing gum and wasn't particularly good at dispensing the stuff therefore getting it on his shoes?? At a total loss here!!
Sounds like a fantastic weekend. Always fun to break out the old classics when you've forgotten enough of their plotlines. Especially with someone else who can share your nostalgia.
From that list I've only played 7th Guest (didn't get very far, was never good with puzzles). I need to play Full Throttle and Phantasmagoria as I know they're popular.
Reminds me, I need to get the Gobliins series to work again. Always end up with no sound or nothing at all.
By the way, you said Quarantine was too fast. If you havem't already try a program called CPUkiller. I had to use it on Grim Fandango because I got trapped in this dead end area where to get back out you're supposed to go on a conveyer belt and jump off at the right time. But the timing was always off of course. CPUkiller slowed down my processor enough to make the game run normally (since the game is designed for older slower PCs) and got me free.
