3d Realms Still is "working" on Duke Nukem Forever
Yes, this game has been in development since 1997. In fact, immediately following Duke Nukem 3D's release in 1996, 3D Realms said at a press conference that they are working on a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D. At the time it was relatively unknown and was scheduled for release in 1998, following a show in the 1998 E3 show. Then in 2001, DNF resurfaced again and was shown (again) in the E3 2001 show. Nothing came out of either years.
The truth is they changed graphic engines, time and again. First it was the original Unreal engine which was then massively upgraded and refined for a 2001 release. Then somewhere along 2005 (a couple of months back), 3D Realms announced they are using a new engine and no release date was set. Overall, since 2001 no information whatsoever was released to the public about DNF. No screenshots, no trailers, no demos, no betas, and no previews of any kind. And 3D Realms were noticeably absent from following E3 shows and any information about DNF remained relatively secret if at all available.
Right now, 3D Realms are basically involved only in the creation of DNF. Since they have turned over Prey for Human Head Studios and are now focusing solely on DNF, we might see something soon enough. It could take FOREVER though...
But no, seriously now, DNF for years have been one of my most anticipated games. All I'm gonna say is, it better be the revolutionary shooter everybody expects it to be. If 3D Realms will fail to capitalize on that to take 8 years in development (world record, btw), then they better produce something of which the gaming world has never seen. Something better than the original was, more revolutionary than the original Half-Life and more technically impressive than Far Cry, Doom 3, or Half-Life 2.
Until that happens, I can only lean on Monolith, who are the foremost and most respected FPS developer of the past 6 years. They produced the No One Lives Forever series (the 1st one being the best shooter of all-time, IMHO), the Aliens vs. Predator series and the highly original Tron 2.0. Right now, my most anticipated game release is that of F.E.A.R. by Monolith which should come out in October. If F.E.A.R. will be that revolutionary shooter everybody's talking about, then it would suffice until DNF comes out. If ever.
