Watch and listen to the tune from Mario Galaxy. I kinda had a Tex flashback while playing it. I would have posted more but my computer is messing up BIG TIME. I can't even do any work. Will post more later when new parts come in.

The whole "tippy toe" use of the piano in music, especially the lower end of the scale it used often in pieces in film. In actual fact, I thought after hearing it used in Pandora it sounded like a lot of old thrillers.
What made the Pandora music unique in my opinion was not the piano, but the heavy use of irregular chords and progressions. Partcularly the D-Minor Augmented Sixth chord which makes up most of Pandora's theme. The whole piece made heavy use of augmented chords, and dissonant progressions to give it it's mystery, which really worked. Especially when you would hear a chord and then the notes that made up that chord played over the top is irregular patterns.
Not only is Pandora's "midi" theme my favourite piece in Tex Murphy, but it is also one of my fav irregular pieces.

During the days where I was getting piano lessons for real I used to annoy my teacher because I would deviate away from the standard curriculum and be very experimental with Jazz pieces... and the theme from Pandora was an inspiration when I was learning because it was different, and turned dissonance into style (for me at least).
So Cub, what notes actually make up the D-Minor Augmented Sixth chord? I have D-F-A (I think), but I'm lost to what the rest means...

Firstly, allow me to correct myself... it is a D Major, not a D minor. However, when played augmented it has a minor sound
To augment a chord you raise the 5th by a semitone, that becomes an augmented triad, and gives a rather dissonant and unresolved sound. The chord in Pandora I beleive is an Augmented sixth which means it not only augments the the 5th, but it retains the original fifth making the augmented note the 6th.
However, it appears to be an inversion of the chord, so instead of being: [D, F#, A and A#] it is [A#, D, F# and A].
Now I could be totally wrong in regards to whether or not that is the exact base chord the piece is played upon... but there is definite augmentation thoughout the entire piece revolving around this structure.

Hahaha! Yeah, I had to learn that piece too... thankfully it was a bit more interesting on Piano... but we still had to loop it 54 times!
