We Will Have Our FMV Tex Murphy Games!

Well Alex emailed me a couple weeks ago telling me to post here. I just want to say I appreicate your enthusiam and I agree with you totally about FMV. If we settle for the second best and make Tex Murphy trilogy by taking the easy way out by putting t on consoles with rendered characters it just isn't Tex Murphy anymore. Which would be the same as nothing. Tex belongs on the PC, with FMV, and Point and Click along with the keyboard, the way it has always been. So I would like to start the FMV Campaign or Nothing campaign. The first thing I think we should we do now that Tex Murphy is now owned by Indie Studios is try and convince them to rerelease UAKM, Pandora, and Overseer in DVD format for the PC to re-expose people to the way Tex is meant to be. If that is a success that will prove that Tex Murphy should be made the way they always have been.

If anyone would like to start this petition to Indie Studios to make the mentioned above Tex Murphy games in DVD format let me know.
Alright, let's see the difficulties that may befall us here.

1. First comes the amount of coding required merely to get these games to work for all modern machines. This would mean redefining the code for windows for the first two games, and redefining a lot of Overseer, as that game was very buggy.

2. When Final Fantasy re-releases it's games, it sells because it's Final Fantasy. When Tex Murphy games are re-released, people say, "Who?". So that would require advertising. Advertising on a pack of adventure games. When was the last time you saw a commercial for an adventure game?

3. Just because it's not FMV does not mean it's not Tex. However, if it can be FMV, what we've learned from movie's like Sky Captain, and Sin City is for once the backgrounds can look good, too.

Hmm...aww, *#$ it. I'm in. Go FMV!

Let me ask you guys something. When has an ultimatum ever really worked for all parties involved?
The arrogance is frankly getting to me.
Who the hell are you to demand anything?
FMV or nothing?
If I were the powers that be, I'd be pissed off to no end. Wash my hands of you and give you a big fat nothing.

I've always enjoyed this board; good banter, intelligent discussion (for the most part) and all of us together hoping for SOMETHING Tex. I don't know about you, but I was truly humbled when the radio theatre hit. They did that for us. Now people are deriding it? Saying their selfless time and contributions are not enough?

@#$% you!

This community was great because we all gave of each other to make this board fun. James contributing the site, Jim, his wisdom and neverending patience and generosity, members that have contributed tons of time and energy to transcribe the books into PDF format, then audio. The Overseer DVD movie by bastion, and lots of fan projects. And fan donations. And of course Cubase, who gave us a backup, in case anything happened to UTM board.
Even the annual "who would be in a Tex Murphy movie" discussion is fun to revisit and a great contribution.

As far as I'm concerned, Tex is still Tex, whether as a novel, interactive text, radio theatre, comic book, rendered CGI character or warts and all FMV glory.
So count me out on your petition. And I suggest you don't send anything like that to Indie Games.
Because frankly, I think it's insulting.

Jen
I appears as if long periods without Tex Murphy does have its side effects.

Whilst I do believe we all want FMV I agree with Jen in the sense that; we are in no position to demand anything from the Tex Murphy crew, who have given us not only some of the best games and memories, but also been at the core of this wonderful community. They don't owe us anything (that includes FMV)... if anything, we owe them for providing us with something that has not only made our lives that little bit more enjoyable but for the friends we have made in this community as a result.

Who are we to make such demands... are we footing the bill? I think not. Do we have the ability to do it better then them? Unlikely!

I also agree that sending a petition demanding FMV to Indie would be a terribly dumb and unappreciative thing to do. If the truth be known, we are lucky to still have a crew that cares about us enough to stay in touch and put in the effort to keep something going that honestly should have died out shortly after 1998, no matter what form or shape it may become.

Nobody should ever look a gift horse in the mouth. Nobody has a gun to your head telling you to play the next Tex game (if there is one) so you don't have the right to put a gun to AC and CJ's head and demand FMV.

Please, lets just drop the whole FMV thing, it is tearing us apart. Just let it go.

As you can tell by the e-mail I had received from the Gods (http://www.unofficialtexmurphy.com/phpb ... .php?t=124), I believe that the next Tex game will be entirely CGI, and will be voiced by a returning cast. However, here are some points to follow.

First I'd like to talk about the drama. No ultimatum is being made. No guns are being pointed. No demands are being made. No picket lines are planned. No protests are on their way.

While I disagree with the FMV or Nothing campaign, and gladly cast my vote for the opposing FMV or Something party, I don't see any reason why people should get upset. A simple answer like...that would cost too much, and there's no marketable approach for decade old products to a new audience would have been better than swearing.

The problem is that Bjyman comes here with a bare bones structure of a greater plan. He says that we should somehow convince them...to do it. So that leaves off the majority of his post to the propaganda. So in that case, as the prime originator of the plan to re-release the Tex Murphy games, I ask you to sit down. Think about it. Indie games doesn't want to hear "If it makes money". You have to be sure that it will sell and make profit or they'll just laugh at you. This isn't Microsoft we're dealing with here. They're not the bastian of evil, devourer of hope and bringing of despair.

So that's the first step of the plan. Make Tex marketable. Before you bring anything to the big players, you have to have a game plan. No holes.

P.S. Never post angry. Cut the drama.

Well, I can agree with the justifications, but I have a much better idea:

Lets just shut up about FMV and just wait like we have for the last 7 or so years and have faith in the guys and support them no matter what they choose to do. Let them decide what would be best for Tex Murphy and not us... we are not in the technical nor financial position to do so ourselves so lets just TRUST THEM.

Well put Cubase. I know I will pay up, utilize, read, whatever, if it's Tex Murphy, I'm there.

At this point I'll take Tex any way I can get him - CGI, FMV, 2D 8-bit graphics, or even macaroni noodles.

While FMV would be nice to have because it stays in line with the last three Tex installments, I can understand the desire to move to CGI. While this would free up the designers to move about the characters as they see fit I think one of the better arguments out there is the one of age. These people are not getting any younger although the voice talent will certainly still be there.

It's the reason I sort of scoff at the ideas of resurrecting the Indiana Jones and Rocky series. Does anyone really want to see Harrison Ford and Sylvester Stallone flexing their muscle at the age of 60? Likewise, although I'm sure Chris stays in great shape, it would begin to get a bit ridiculous to imagine him continuing to physically play Tex as the years go on.

Yes, it's true - we all love our old FMV. But, is that a way to make a profitable game anymore? Chances are, not at all. So, I'll take any medium provided, simply out of the love of the story and the characters. So, to the powers that be, just keep on fighting for us, and we'll be more than happy to graciously accept what we get.

I honestly am somewhat appalled that an ultamatum is even being conceived. At this point, we're severely lucky they are even still interested in continuing the series.

So, let's just remain faithful and hope we get blessed with more texian goodness.

I too was once a purist over the whole FMV thing. I am a movie guy and I liked to see actors acting out their parts in a game. That is the difference though, it is a game. "Interactive Movie" was a buzz word for when the technology was new and flashy. It is extremely dated now. FMV is dead. Talk to people (non-Tex fans) who play games on PC and Console and you will see exactly how dead it is. As disheartening as it is, it's a benefit. I like movies for their acting and storytelling. I do not want a game based purely around a movie. That is why there are seperate genres. Video Games are based on graphics, and 3D animation only accents that. If you want FMV so bad, indulge movies like Sin City. There is your beloved FMV in it's current state and I have a feeling it will remain there until EVERYTHING becomes 3D animation. I do not want to see that either. I still like seeing real actors, it's just not needed in a video game. They never belonged there to begin with. If you want live actors, support the medium in which they originated. Angry backlash in 5..4..3..2..1
You mean go to the theatre? Watch plays? Nooooooooooo! The Horror! The Horror!

Yeah, I realized that little miscalculation in the "medium" arguement after I wrote it. Thanks for crushing the whole point with historical fact. Was kinda hoping no one would catch on and dwell on the whole Greek Drama aspect of the arguement. Meh, I'm not a Rocket Surgeon.
Yup any Tex, in any shape or form is good enough for me.
