A Message from AC
Greetings, Friends of Tex!
I'm in the office this Saturday, putting the finishing touches on my contributions to a new game that Indie Built expects to be released in mid-November (barring any last-minute setbacks). It's not an adventure game, but I guarantee that many of you will enjoy the story, characters, and videos I wrote and produced along with a bunch of very talented artists. So far, we've gotten rave reviews for the content and I hope it meets the demanding expectations of this community.
Speaking of which...as I read through the last couple weeks of posts, I have to say I was really disappointed with this new wave of negativity. Now I'm not here to preach, but the strength of this message board has always been that it's a safe haven. We're family here. I don't know why so many of you feel the need to spew your political hatred (on both sides of the spectrum) in a place that's always been damn near sacred to a lot of us, including me.
I think most of us respect others' opinions and their right to express them. However, what I read today reminded me of the first time I saw my father completely lose his temper - it was so shocking and disappointing at the same time...I never really got over it. Now I know we all have strong feeling about lots of things - and that's great - but there's a time and a place for everything...until then, we have to control what comes out of our mouths (or fingertips, as it were). It reminds me of something I once heard: "If women knew what we men REALLY think about, they'd NEVER STOP SLAPPING US."
Over the years, I've come to regard this community much like the Chandler Avenue crowd. Cub, the mover and shaker...JTOG, the sentimental old guy...Jen, the Voice of Reason...Old friends like Andy, Crowley, McDonis, Ripley, Sowden, Sam Spade, DemonLawyer, DrPaul, Mike R., and a bunch of others...Ryan, Michel, and now Alex, as the (usually) lovable mutants......Annie from Oz, Cindy, Sai, making things a little sweeter when you show up...and James, the Man Behind the Curtain.
This is a diverse, interesting, intelligent group of people who I consider to be friends. And, frankly, I think something's got to change before everything is ruined. This is my advice, and I hope each of you accepts it in the fond spirit that I intend:
Cub, get off the political soapbox. I'm sure many of us share some of your opinions, but some of us also disagree. And as an American, I don't like being insulted by someone from another country who doesn't have the information or experience necessary to make sweeping condemnations.
JTOG, I don't know what you said or did to set Cub off, but if you do, let's kiss and make up, OK?
I know how hard it is to set aside your pride and open lines of communication, but let's not just flush years of goodwill and friendship.
Alex Bark, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but you have no idea what's involved with funding, creating, or marketing computer games. Again, I respect your opinions, but you should try listening to the other people on this message board once in awhile instead of just haphazardly stirring up controversy. The suggestion that Overseer killed FMV is too ridiculous to even merit an explanation.
And speaking of Overseer, I'm not going to defend it against the recent plethora of negative comments. At other times, I've explained in great detail why Overseer came to be, why it wasn't on the same level as Pandora, and why it ended with a cliffhanger. But I think its good qualities far outweigh its bad qualities and, if most of you enjoyed playing it, I think we did our job as game creators; how it stack-ranks or holds up to minute dissection means nothing to me.
I hope you'll receive this message with the warmth and admiration I feel for this community. As I've said, CJ and I wouldn't even be working toward bringing Tex back (in any format we can) if it weren't for you people.
I believe there's enough crap in the world without us letting this message board turn into a cesspool of negativity, criticism, personal attacks, petty semantics, bullying, etc. If you don't have something good - or at least constructive - to say, create a BLOG and spew to your heart's content. Let the rest of us keep the UTM website a special place for Friends of Tex.
With great fondness,
Aaron

Aaron, thanks a lot for your voice of reason. I'm happy that things are going well and I know we're more than thrilled with your keeping us abreast to your projects. I know I'd buy anything with your name on it. I'm sure we'll all buy, love, and tell others about your new work. I'll keep the faith, and I'll try to help other do that as well.
Thanks for stopping by,

Oh, and happy 100 posts to me.
Aaron,
It's nice to see your post in amongst the hoopla that has stirred recently. I'm technically new to the community, and honestly don't have much to contribute in the way of intelligence, or anything of the sort. I'm not going to be creating any games anytime soon, or producing music for you to listen to, or even making a website ... quite frankly my ninth grade education just isn't up to snuff with the actual brain power it would take for such an endeavor. The only place where I have an inkling of ability, is writing, which I had to develop myself, after I dropped out of school. Being a truck driver, I probably would be the least refined, and least educated amongst you good people.
So, in retrospect, I can say that I'm partially responsible for some of the political nature of some of the conversations that have rissen. Sometimes when I get angry, I can spout a whole bunch of nonsense, that after the fact, can make me look like a real dunce. And for that I'm sorry ... I found myself to be a rather blatant A**hole to run into an already established community, and start raving about war, politics, and president bashing, when the board was set up for a community that is essentially the only life blood left to a series I grew up with and have loved with a deep passion.
So again, I apologize to you, and to the community for my actions.
I just love your character, I love your established world, and I want to get back to it. I can't wait to see what you've got cooked up with the new studio. Best of luck to you with it.

I'm not fat ... I'm festively plump.
Thanks for sorting this out. There is enough negativity in the world without it turning up in this little corner of the web. I think we should just stick to the stuff that brought us altogether here - Tex, video games, novels and the other things that we all enjoy. Politics and religion is the sort of thing that a diverse community like this will have different opinions on. While some people might bring up a poin opposing something they can deeply offend someone else. So lets all do the messagte board equivalent of drinking beer, being merry and running naked through interesting parts of town.
There is so much positive stuff going on within this community. We have writers, all manner of production things happening and people with good ideas trying to shape them into something enjoyable. So when you come here be happy, It's the home of Tex. All this negativity would make him angry - he might even try and shoot you, although if there is an open window nearby chances are the gun will end out flying through it rather than pointed at you.
Oh and if you are going to trash talk some of my fav video games you better make it constructive, because things along the lines of 'overseer is shite' will generally be met with disagreement around here. Overseer was great. You should be grateful that it even made it to us considering some of the probs that faced the dev team. They still managed to create a masterpiece in my mind. It was a daring project at the time...the first game really designed for dvd. In a short time with new technology it was going to be difficult to release a perfect game. I'm no games developer but i'm a software engineer and know how a tight schedule and unforseen circumstances can make things a nightmare. So enuf with the overseer bagging and enuf with discussing the pros and cons of the american government. I live in Australia and work for the government:P I could have a whinge about our government until the cows came home, but I won't.
Wow sorry for the long wnded drivel.

Sam is pronto a real word?
I guess I'm just happy AC even knows my name.
I think AC's articulate, and quite heartfelt input into the goings on of late are a true testament to the feelings and mentality that have always brought me back week after week, year after year. I don't post as much as I once did, but who among us does? It would be a shame to lose what we've got.
Anything I can do to help out I will (within reason...nobody's crashing on my couch...).

Hello, Aaron. Great to see you had time to drop by. It's very kind of you to take the time to keep us up to date on how things are going for you.
I'll be interested to see what your new project is about (congratulations on finishing it). I wish you all the best success with it.
I think Overseer is great. It certainly had me engaged and that's the true test of any game. I've been on many communities where the 'dissecting' in the interests of debate get quite heated, which is fair enough since it raises topics people would never think of, but at the end of the day it's all entertainment, and if it's entertaining that's the final clincher. The general consensus I'd say is that Overseer is very entertaining so you did a great job.
I wish you all the best with further projects. And I think it's very admirable that you and CJ work to bring back a much loved game series after all those years of no financial/official (as in game companies) return for your efforts. I can't think of another games series (and the series' community) myself personally that has the benefit of this situation. Thanks! And just think... back when the Tex games were out and about and I was first enjoying them all those years ago I doubt even knew what the internet was, and here today the internet allows us to get in touch with the kind creator of those very games (OK I admit I'm rambling
)
I feel honoured somehow, especially as I'm not as active here as I'd like to be. By the way that's not meant as an insult to Aaron's memory
(regardless of the fact of who would I be to critisize? I have a terrible memory!) but as a credit to his kind dedication to this community *quietly sneaks away and celebrates

Hey AC, thanks for keeping us up with whats going on. I can't wait for your new game to come out, and i know what I will go out and buy it. By the way, does anyone know what the title is? Anyway, thanks for your kind words for our community. I've been kindof sitting back and watching this happen and not know what to do about it.
I think that people have forgotten why we are all here, its for Tex! I think we need to have a date and time picked out. We all need to get inside a chat room, and play a Tex game. Any Tex game, and we periodicly check in with the room, talk about it, and have fun with it. I think we need something to jumpstart this community again. I've never been much for mass organization, so someone else would have to do it. But then again, thats my 2 cents.
Anyway, thanks for still talking to us AC. Good luck with your new game! Later.

AC, Thanks for keeping us update with your projects at your transferred from Microsoft to new job at Indie Built Inc. So is this new game a Sport, Strategy, RPG, Action, Action-Adventure, etc. genre title for PC/XBOX/PS2?
I wasn’t aware of this negative discussion on TM forum since I am too busy and try to visit this forum once in a while. I’ll just ignore whatever the negative discussion was since I read AC response on issues. I’ve choose ignored whatever the negative discussion was and I will go positive with talking about TM future, TM discussion, others etc. We all should continue keeping our faith in AC/CJ to bring back TM on our PC.
In the mean time, everybody should be positive here on TM message board and whatever the negative was I just read from AC response towards it, put that behind you guys, move forward with positive discussion, and without getting out of line with whatever the negative discussion was that could bring the whole board down with unhappy people and keeping people away from TM forum.
We don't want that to happen do we? We all should united as TM family and stay positive.
Take care,
Ryan

I think I might give my few words on this matter as well.
First of all I've always enjoyed browsing through this community with all the interesting discussions and conversations about all things related to Tex and the world around him. I know I haven't been all that active myself, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the company of all you guys
But as I saw the posts that was raised about political issues and also the Katrina post, I honestly told myself not to start reading through those posts. Now I know the hurricane did some really nasty damage and it was all terrible, but for some reason I didn't quite find it appropriate for me to read (Now please don't think of me as an insensitive bastard because I DO care about all the lives that were lost and the damage caused by Katrina). Of course I understand your reasons for posting this as you wanted to make sure that fans of Tex from the area were safe and all that, but I just think it got all heated up all of a sudden, and that's where I threw in the towel.
The same happened with the whole political issue - I knew from the start that it was far from Tex-related and that's why I insisted on not reading the posts as I'm not even near capable of discussing politics with anyone. Politics isn't my area of interest and I'm not interested in flaming others for the way they do politics either. For me I'm just happy that we have the thing called civilization and that we can manage to get food on the table every day. How a president or primi minister decide to run a country isn't my concern and I take things as they come. As far as I'm concerned let people discuss what they want as long as it's in an appropriate forum.
This is the world of Tex Murphy and discussions/conversations ought to be centered around him and his New San Franciscan world with all our beloved characters and locations. Sowden actually has a point. It is a brilliant idea for us to start playing some of the games through and talk about it while playing. For example - I just started playing Under A Killing Moon and I'm close to ending Day 1. Let's start some talk about the games as they come along and remind ourselves of the genius and humourous things that only Tex can say.
Before I end I would like to say that it was really great to hear from you, Aaron. Thank you for the wake-up call - I think the board really needed it. I wish you all the best of luck in your future projects and I can't wait to see what kind of game you have in store for us. I'm also anxious to know more about the future of Tex. Thank you very much for keeping the hopes up for all of us.

I think it's great that AC actually takes the time to mingle with the fans. You gotta repect a person who really loves what they do and appreciate the people who appreciate them (I think I got that right!?)
I'm also looking forward to your upcoming game, Tex-related or not. I've got PC and Playstation 2, so as long as it's available on one of those count me in!
Cheers,
Bren

Wow. This is amazing - now I have respect for AC not merely as someone brilliant at what he does for a living but also as a human being. I hope I'm around for long enough to gain the affection he obviously has for all of you.
With such attention from one of the games' most important creators, I wonder why this isn't called the Official Tex Murphy Message Board!
