Way back in the early 70's, I had an "experimental photography' class at the university. In one of my projects, I produced an image very much like these. We didn't have computers back then, so it had to be done the old fashioned way (in the dark room.)
I first took an original image, where all of the subjects had faces. Then I made a large paper negative on which I could color in, by hand, areas that I wanted to drop-out. Then I soaked my paper negative in oil to make it semi-transparent and put it back in the enlarger to make a positive from it. I had to do a couple of generations like this (paper negative and positive) to add light and dark areas to the faces, but ended up with something just like these pictures (in black and white.)
Now, you can do easily and in minutes on a computer what took me hours to do in the dark room.
