Podcasting and other new web technologies...
Hi all,
I saw a request go by in another post for "podcast" versions of the Tex Murphy Radio Theater episodes, and it got me thinking: Maybe I'm just very ill-informed, but what exactly is so great about podcasting? Isn't it the same thing as just downloading an MP3? I've toyed around with podcasts a little bit on iTunes, and couldn't really see the value in them. Again, maybe I'm not seeing the big picture, or don't understand the full extent of the technology. Anybody care to enlighten me (and anyone else who might be in my same boat)?
(And while we're on the subject, I feel similarly about RSS feeds. Everyone seems to think they're the berries, but I just don't get it. In order to view an RSS feed, don't I have to go online and go to the RSS feed site? How is that different from simply going to the actual web site? Some viewpoints on RSS would be welcome, as well

1. Yes, it is just downloading an mp3.
2. Advantage? Public access. How are people going to find TMRT now? They have to look for it. He/She who knows not of Tex Murphy, will not look. By putting the episodes on Podcast, the curious passerby can download it for no charge. Free advertising!
3. I have no idea was an RSS feed is. Sorry.

There are a variety of ways to access RSS feeds. Some use their email applications (Outlook, etc.). I use Firefox, and an RSS feed is saved as a drop-down of links to newest articles. For example, the current download version of Firefox comes with an RSS link called "Latest Headlines" on the left of the Bookmarks Toolbar. It's a great way to not have to go to the website, load graphics, etc. and still keep apprised of updates to a website. The berries, indeed.
RSS Feed? Is that like some kind of cow feed that you give them, so they grow up to be big and strong?
Podcast? Is that like a new form of stabilizing broken bones?
Honestly, I don't claim to know, or claim I'll ever know what these things are. I'm still trying to figure out how to run a defrag, much less all this new fangled technical software mumbo jumbo. I will forever be stumped by the technology of this world ...

I'm not fat ... I'm festively plump.
Making TMRT available to more people is a great idea. I think that newcomers would be left wanting more than 6 episodes though.
Podcasting is basically MP3 downloading, but with the convenience of keeping track of the latest updates added to the list. It basically tags and downloads new files automatically as they come available. But I suppose with TMRT only having 6 episodes it doesn't really apply.
I don't know anything about RSS, but I think podcasting maybe related to RSS. I'm currently using IPodder to download daily segments from my favourite radio station, and to connect I had to type in a URL pointing to a filename "rss_sydney.xml", I not sure if it's any relation or if it's a coincidence that they decided to name it that.

I have just got into podcasting myself. Listening to them at any rate.
On a PC, I just don't sit back, close my eyes and listen, but I finally bought an iPod and the big advantages they seem to have are:
1) They download new episdoes automatically (on a pc I saw this as bad as it would lose old podcasts before I'd listened to them but)...
2) They seem to save all the podcasts on your iPod, so you can listen to them all whenever you want - on the train etc etc.
The drawback with a Tex podcast is what would you do after the episodes? The idea of a podcast as I understand it is that it's a (free) subscription - ie new episodes come out all the time. With little new news, how far would this go?

hey there.. podcasting is a great way to promote tex to the general public. personally i used the radio theater episodes on my mp3 player a long time ago and listened to them on the bus, on the road, etc.. it's a great way to pass your time and the quality of TMRT is amazing..
i even used TMRT to put me to sleep.. lol.. i know it's weird

The Adventure genre is not dead. It's the memory of the games and the thrill we felt while playing them as well as the true sadness we felt when we finished them that will keep the genre alive.
I think I may have been the one to suggest TMRT PodCasts, and if I wasn't, I thought about it, so that's almost the same thing, right?
I think if there were TMRT Podcasts, it would be necessary to go beyond the current 6, which I suggested as a way to placate us until they could get games out. It would help to expose the TM brand, and they could be done weekly. My idea was that they could just be smaller cases elsewhere in the TM timeline, like in between some of the games or even before any of them, while he was working for the Colonel--which could make it easier to cast if they couldn't get all the old people back.
Obviously the major stumbling block here is time and budgeting for AC and CJ, as well as getting the old gang back together--but hey, I can dream, right?
