WARNING: Geocities shutting down for good...

James, you might want to sticky this as I am sure there are a few people who still may own Geocities sites (incl. a few older Tex Murphy sites out there):

Yahoo is shutting down Geocities for good!

Yahoo! today without warning updated its GeoCities page notifying visitors that new accounts are no longer available and that existing ones will be shut down by the end of the year.

“Later this year we will be closing all GeoCities accounts and web sites,” reads Yahoo!’s help section. “We have decided to discontinue the process of allowing new customers to sign up for GeoCities accounts as we focus on helping our customers explore and build new relationships online in other ways.”

“We'll provide more details about closing GeoCities and how to save your site data this summer,” the company said.

Will Yahoo! be replacing GeoCities with another free website hosting service?

“No, Yahoo! does not offer another free hosting service. Instead we recommend our award-winning Yahoo! Web Hosting service, which includes a personalized domain name (such as widgetdesigns.com) and matching email, new site building tools, unlimited disk space and bandwidth, premium customer support, and more.”

It seems the internet has moved away from providing users with an open playground such as GeoCities and towards more structured, uniform systems such as MySpace.

Well folks, for those of you who still own a Geocities website (like me), you may want to think about downloading a backup, as they will be no more by the end of the year.

Tex Murphy Boulevard and Alcatraz are two veteran Tex Murphy web sites I know which still used Geocities. I have already downloaded a backup of Tex Murphy Boulevard, and I hope Matt Buckstein has a copy of Alcatraz safe somewhere.

It's the end of an era people.

-Cub. =o)
Parts of Coit Tower (if not all) are still hiding on Geocities servers somewhere... though I think I'll be letting it go... I have a new unfinished version of Coit Tower I was planning on relaunching last year, but I never got round to finishing it... perhaps when we get more info on "Fedora" will be the time for the new era of Coit Tower :)

Speaking of geocities shutting.... wow... I rememeber when I first made an early version of my Tex site on it. I spent hours on it on the weekends. And before that it was on angelfire (but it wasnt a Tex site, it was just a personal site, and also about Power Rangers lol) -- this would of been like 15 or something years ago! wow... like Cub said... it is an end of era... wow...

Well that sucks, I was just saying the other day that I had a website up for almost 10 years and now it's days are doomed. Oh well, no one really liked GeoCities anyway. There's gotta be another place that still offers free web hosting. . . . that's not angelfire or those other annoying ones.
If you have the money you could always buy your own domain and have your own website without the worry of a host like Geo or Angel, etc... Domains aren't really that expensive nowadays...

Just remembered afew other old ones, that are gone...

XOOM which i loved cause i think it had the most avaliable webspace at the time, and their xoom bar fopr their advertisements etc was the smallest of the ones at the time (just alittle small bar at the top..

And I also remember fortunecities (though dont quote me as I dont know if that did close down I just think it is for some reason haha).

Just thought I'd throw in a few more older providers... But as Bafitis said, it's really pretty easy to get your own domain name and hosting space now, for pretty cheap... u just need to look around.

There are plenty of other free hosting services out there. Some that actually offer many features (including PHP, PERL, and MySQL databases) and don't force any ads.

I suggest http://www.000webhost.com/

I liked 'em so much I upgraded to their paid service after only a month. Don't let the "cheap" price fool you, though. You only get the $4.99 a month or whatever if you pay for five years or something like that. I needed the extra features though, and the price you do pay wasn't THAT bad.
