UAKN sound problem
Hey all! how have we been?
Have a quick question for anyone who can answer. Bought UAKM for gog.com as my copies of UAKM have a few scratches on them etc, and installed it all, but the sound is a bit buggy. It's normal but for like every 5 or 10 seconds the sound becomes distorted or something so it sounds like the person talking in a chipmunk for about half a second. Sure I can play the game like this but it does sound alittle bit annoying. Anyone know how to fix this problem? Was having the same troubles when i installed it with my original cds too. Never used to have this problem playing it on windows 98 on my old computer. Oh well.

Sounds like you have found the first bug... You can try tinkering with the sound settings inside the game and see if that helps any... Otherwise you might have to email GOG and let them know of the problem...
I've had problems like that in games before... Sure you can play the game without error, but it can be a very annoying glitch...
How often does the problem occur???

I don't beleive i have finally found someone who gets the same problem. Is the sound like high pitched quirky sound, it's dos box. I have been trying for ages to solve it. I only get under vista.
it's happens with pandora & UAKM in vista. I have 2 PC's with the same motherboard & same sound drivers one works fine under xp & the other gets this stupid audio break up & then this high pitched sound. It's not all the time just now & then but at times it happens a lot.
To prove my point I installed xp back on my external drive & it doesn't happen .
You are running vista.
By the way I get under any version, original cd's, hd installers & GOG

Q: The sound stutters or sounds stretched/weird.
A: You're using too much CPU power to keep DOSBox running at the current speed.
You can lower the cycles, skip frames, reduce the sampling rate of
the respective sound device (see the DOSBox configuration file) or
the mixer device. You can also increase the prebuffer in the configfile.
If you are using cycles=max or =auto, then make sure that there is no
background processes interfering! (especially if they access the harddisk)
there seems to be no dos box cong file with the cog version

This is actually a pretty easy fix. In the UAKM folder, find the dosboxtex3.conf file, open it in word pad, and change the sound buffer from 10 to something larger, like 240. If you run The Pandora Directive from your hard drive this fix will work for that game as well, just edit the dosbox.conf file in the same manner.
TAlexand, welcome to the boards... Always good to see a new poster... Be sure to stack around with us for awhile...

Thanks, got a real hankering for some Tex Murphy action, downloaded and beat UAKM (can't for the life of me find my old discs), and now I'm playing The Pandora Directive off my HD. I'm really digging not having to switch discs, but I had this same problem in the GOG game and the dosbox version of Pandora I set up myself. The prebuffer setting seemed to fix it for me. Once I finish Pandora I'm going to try and finally beat Overseer off the dvd...
I haven't played Overseer in so long, it will probably be like a whole new game for me... I'm really excited that the guys are working together again and on top of that we just might have a New Tex on the Horizon...

Man I forgot how much better Pandora is than UAKM. Don't get me wrong I love both games, but the quality of the production is just so much higher, as is the acting. I really also love the darker story and the whole conspiracy aspect. I never finished Overseer the first time I tried to play it because I got so frustrated with trying to get the DVD version to run right and I really didn't want to settle for more CD swapping. I've got it running off the DVD at the moment but I've had to turn off the midi music. Hopping I can figure out a way to fix that little issue by the time I finish Pandora, but if I can't I might run it off the CDs, not having music is really a bummer.
Yeah Pandora is widely considered the better of the 5 games in the series... Pretty much everyone I've heard from chooses Pandora... I have seen a few choose UAKM as being their personal favorite... I think that might be due to it being the first with the Interactive movies and whatnot... Some people will choose the Original over Sequels...
But needless to say, the Tex Murphy Series is by far the greatest of all adventure game series... Even today with the high tech graphics and whatnot, if I could only install one game to play forever, I would probably have to choose Pandora...
Chris Jones is a Natural Actor... Those are usually rare to find, most have to go through acting classes and stuff... I really wish he would do more work in the field... I would love to see him on the big screen...

THANK YOU VERY MUCH THANK YOU TAlexand
If you only knew how long I have been trying to solve this problem as I was always looking for someone posting this problem but I always was searching for a quirking sound & dos box called it a stretched sound . Only last week I realised it didn't do it on my xp pc at work so I installed xp on my external drive . Vista was the problem for me but MARSO84 had it in xp. The sound is perfect.
Funny thing is same PC , one would think I would have to change the buffer forboth operating systems. Now I think about it , they tell you to change it to 240 in RXD sound for overseer.
