Gaming is such a different beast these days

Nice speech.

The thing i miss the most about the old gaming era was the mom and pop shops.

I remember too back in the day when Toys R Us was your one stop game shop.

Isles and isles of turbo gfx, genesis, nintendo and then super nintendo.

The mom and pop shops were the best though.... back in the day when you could by a used snes game for 20-35 bucks. They started to die during the early ps2 era.

Now the EBs and the Gamestops run the used market and charge 5 bucks less than a copy brand new. WTF??? In most cases, you might as well buy it new. So you have to pay 40 to 50 bucks now and the games aren't even worth that much.

I think we've really struck a Nerve with Fred here... Not that it's a bad thing... We should all be so passionate, but I think Fred would lead the charge if there were a revolt by us Old Gamers...

Fred, in regards to Crazy Frog Racing, it's a kids game. Games targeting kids require no quality standard, just like movies targeting kids. That's why there are five Home Alones and about ten Land Before Times and another five Beethovens.

Ultimately, as long as there is funding, a sequel to a bad game can exist. Bad companies can get a second chance. Or a third. Such as...

Call of Juarez was pretty crappy. Especially that part where you hunted rabbits. And then climbed a mountain to get a feather for some guy. Then climbed back down the mountain only to find the guy dead. But they made another Call of Juarez, and it looks good.

Bulletproof Witch was something awful. Now they've got Nier coming out under the Square Enix label. Nier is just a generic slasher clone, and yet that's still improvement over Bulletproof Witch. Should they have gotten the money to make a generic game while better games lie dormant? My answer should be obvious.

Ultimately, as long as the company tries to improve their next product, tries to succeed where they failed before, then it marks progress. Maybe.

And now so I can say the word a third time in this post...

ULTIMATELY!

But Fred, look at gaming history, there has always been crap like Crazy Frog Racer out there... and it's sold. It all started on the Atari, with companies putting together any piece of crap to try and get some sales, and yes it did lead to the crash of 83, but when the NES revived gaming, there was just as much garbage on that system. (PCs i admit were a different beast, but man has there been garbage on the PC every step of the way).

And yes films do have their Godfathers and their Lord of the Rings and Pulp Fictions, but for the most part, the stuff that sells more often than not is shitty action movie #45, contrived comedy #89 and romantic film #465. The good stuff is either a surprise hit, or it stays on the fringes. I argue that games have become that way too.

Now PC adventures in the 90s are interesting because the adventure genre was mainstream, and there were a lot of hits, but gaming itself was still a niche hobby back then.

I had another point, but its late, i spent all day as a groomsman at a wedding i'm not thinking at my clearest. I shall be back tomorrow to continue this discussion with a clean head. :)
