Please Help Illiterate Computer User Play Game
I just picked up a really good second hand copy of Under the Killing Moon. It cost me three dollars, so I thought I'd take the chance on its compatibility as everything was in really good condition. However, I have Vista Home Premium- and so it won't run.
I'm not completely stupid so I looked up ways to run it on the web. I downloaded Dosbox as per some instructions- but then I get stuck, because said instructions get REALLY complicated and I don't know what I'm doing. I've messed around my computer before, trying new applications out, and nearly wrecked my operating system because of my ignorant meddling with the system 'register'. Could somebody please help me out? I really have no idea.
The game looks like it could be a good one- I wanted to give it a chance- even if it WAS only three bucks! But if it really IS all that trouble- I'll donate it to the nearest charity shop.

Go to Nilo's website and follow his instructions... They are usually pretty clear and easy to follow... Enter the Site and then go to the Downloads section...
http://home.wideopenwest.com/~hbech/MAIN%20PAGE.html
Whatever you do... DO NOT, get rid of that game... The Tex Murphy Series is probably the Best series of games you will Ever play...
If you still seem to have problems after trying Nilo's instructions, come on back and we'll see what we can do... One way or another we'll get you up and running... It's what we live for... ;}
Once we get you running with UAKM, which I'm sure you'll enjoy... You can purchase any or all of the other games through GOG at the top of any screen on this message board...

I'm afraid no luck so far. Dosbox is still very confusing and some of the files I downloaded didn't seem to extract or "register" properly.
I believe that I finally mounted some sort of drive on Dosbox. Drive C. However Dosbox said it wasn't recommended and would I please try a subdirectory next time. (I was trying to copy the text in the illustration of Dosbox on the instructions.) I typed in CD \MOON to start the game as instructed and all I got was "Unable to change to: \MOON."
Unngh! Getting frustrated. (I really tried-
)
I forgot to mention that originally I actually got some response from the game by changing my vista display driver to standard, operating "run" and then typing in the command "D:install". I got into a screen that showed the game starting up, but there was various red warning boxes saying drives "G" "H" "I" and "J" "weren't ready." Clicked "Retry"- nothing happened. Clicked "Fail" and I got another message box with the option to "Install software" or "Return to Dos". When I select "Install Software" I get a notification telling me that it was unable to set "VESA graphics mod 101h (640x480 256 colour) mode" and that I needed a VESA-capable SVGA video card. When I select "Return to Dos" it takes me straight back to my computer desktop.
By the way, I'm seriously beginning to get interested in being "generous" and offering the game to you guys- free of charge! I mean- if YOU like it....!!

C: mount G G:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl
mount C C:\moon

copy this to dos box configuaration folder. vista will not let you save it until you do the following -
find the file ,with your mouse right click & then click on properties. then select security & click on user or your name & click edit. then click allow.
this will allow to save the file.
then paste the above command, you will have to change G G: to the letter of your drive
put your cd in the drive.
did you install the game on the hard drive first. If not that could be your only problem, dos box must find the directory(folder)
there is a patch also you need to install before playing the game.
Listen just spend $9.99 from gog.com & you get the program that plays on the hard drive & dos box is already included, you will not need any disks. when you click on the folder the game will start. This is the version for you.

It's been a while since I've looked-in on the TM boards, and I'm happy I did today, because we DO NOT want anyone giving up on a Tex Murphy Game! I will do whatever is necessary to get UAKM up-and-running for you.
Send me an email and I will send everything you need to get UAKM up and running! Being that you already have DOSbox installed, I'll put together a package for you that will contain all the necessary folders (including the moon and DOSbox folders). Then all you will need to do will be to replace\overwrite your existing moon and DOSbox folders with the ones I send to you. Just let me know where your CD drive\s are located: example drive D. Or if you have two drives then send me both: example D and E.
You DO NOT want to give up on a Tex Murphy game!!
Please note that I have a new email address:

no, I do NOT want to give up on getting UAKM to run under Windows XP or Windows 7,
but the problem is:
I am sort of a computer-idiot, so I have sent you an E-Mail and I hope that you can provide me with some very detailed, foolproof advice how to get that great game running again after so many years!
Would be great, so please check your E-Mail if you want to help me out!
Thank you very much in advance,
sincerely
Tom
P.S.: if anyone else wants to lend me a helping hand with this game,
please E-Mail me at:

gog have UAKM for sale for $10.00 it has been edited to run under xp,vista & win 7.
dos box is included in the game installer & you don't have to worry about swapping cd's
This is a good option for newer computer users. The game is yours after you buy it & you can re download at anytime after that.
a lot of us own the orignal game but we puchased it again from gog.

Yes, along with the other games as well... Well worth the investment to help the original creators to continue making games and to possible bring Tex back to us...plumgas wrote:a lot of us own the orignal game but we puchased it again from gog.

I'm afraid this purchase would not support the "original creators"!?Bafitis wrote:Yes, along with the other games as well... Afaik the makers of UAKM were "Access Software", located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
They made some superb games like UAKM, "Links 386" and "Links LS" (both of them being golf-simulations) and many others.
Even though I am from Austria, when I needed help with an installation or something, they also had an extremely friendly hotline and even though it was costly at that time, I frequently phoned them and knew them by their names already!
These were the good old times when the games kept getting better and better with every new version and when the user-support was personal and (user-)friendly!
Unfortunately, some time around the turn of the century Microsoft bought that fine company and it didn't take long and they have ruined all those great games!Tex Murphy disappeared as well as the golf-simulation (without being replaced by something better or evenadequate!
So I would love to give all my support to "Access Software" and their team, but I am afraid they got lost somewhere in the Microsoft void or elsewhere.
Without much hope for us that they will ever come back (even though this would be very much desireable and welcomed!).
Cheers,
Tom

Tom,
Rest assured that the purchases from GOG do go back to the creators of Tex Murphy. Aaron Conners made the deal with GOG to put those games up on the website and those proceeds are going to Big Finish Games (Aaron's and Chris's new computer game company). Aaron did succeed to obtain the intellectual property rights back from "evil" Microsoft.
All is right with the world. The ashes of Access Software have been reborn into Big Finish Games and our favorite guys are at the helm.

Go to that Website, there you will find a New company owned and operated by the Original Creators of the Tex Murphy Series, along with one of the Original Co-Owners of Access Software, Chris Jones... Along with Aaron Connors the main Writer behind UAKM and Pandora, both of which are actual Novels, in case you didn't know that...
As Sam said, rest assured that if you purchase the Tex Murphy games or the 3 Cards games, you will indeed be supporting the Original Programmers and Creators of Tex Murphy and the Links games...
We would not steer you wrong... A lot of the people on this board have been members of this community for over a decade supporting the Comeback of Tex Murphy...
