Bob's your uncle!

This is directed mostly toward our British and Australian members.

Many years ago, in Disney's original, animated 101 Dalmations, the story takes place in London. The two thieves Jasper and Horace are a couple of low-lives and use a lot of slang in their conversations. One of the phrases they use is "Bob's your uncle." I think this phrase means, roughly, the same as two shakes of a lamb's tail or something that is done quickly and easily.

More recently, I've been playing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves on the PS3. Near the beginning of the game, Drake and an accomplice are plotting a heist. His accomplice, Harry Flynn is, I think, Australian. (At least his accent sounds Australian to me.) Anyway, in the course of laying out the plan Flynn says something like "We go in through the sewers, steal the gem and, Bob's your uncle, we're gone."

I'm just wondering. Do any of you guys know the origin of this phrase? Does anyone still use it? Am I interpreting it correctly?

Also, Cub, since you have a PS3, have you played any of the Uncharted series?
I've picked up Uncharted 2, but haven't tossed it in the machine yet.

However, the phrase means "It's solid." or "We're all set." It's to communicate that everything is as it should be.

I know that in the film Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, there's a scene were one of the gangsters ends the sentence with "...and Robert's your father's brother!"

It's old as the hills, Doc. Might as well go looking for the origin of the term "O.K."

'Course, I could be wrong.

Also, Dr Paul, I own and have played the original Uncharted and LOVED it... I still have to get 2 which I will most likely do this month.

I stand corrected! Thanks Cub!

Cub and Fred, thanks for the link and insight.

I like that phrase. Although it is not commonly used in the U.S., I will do my best to make it fashionable here.

I really love the Uncharted series of games. But the only game-system-type games I've played so far are Uncharted 1 and 2 and Ghostbusters. So I don't really know how typical or untypical Uncharted is from other games. You guys have a lot broader experience with these things than me. How would you compare Uncharted to other games out there?

I have played Uncharted 1 on easy, normal and hard. (Couldn't get through crushing.) I've only played Uncharted 2 on easy so far. But I plan to work my way up.
Seems like a pretty kewl phrase... I'll help you spread it around the US Doc...

Hey Doc, check out this trailer for a console game coming out next year.

I'm sure it's got a theme that'll pique your interest!

Wow! That looks really cool.
I love westerns. But who's this Red guy that is spoken of in the comments?
I'm liking that game as well... It looks like a highly advanced version of GUN, with a better story as well... And I really liked GUN...

As far as I know, there's no character by the name 'Red' in that game. The only reason the name of the game is Red Dead Redemption, is because it's a sequel (of sorts - more like a continuation of a franchise, really) of Red Dead Revolver.

I didn't much care for GUN, to be honest, but it does remind me of another good western shooter from way back, called Outlaws. Developed by Lucasarts (a western fps from Lucasarts, imagine that!), of all things. I really loved the story in Outlaws, it was quite well written.

I might have to pull it out from the shadows again. Would probably take some doing to get it to work on a modern computer, but, shove it up against Dosbox, and hey presto:

That phrase was also used in Syberia I when Kate Walker called the French bartender for the recipe for the...............................I know what, but do you???
"If you look to me for illumination, you better have a flashlight!"
If I recall, it was a Blue Helena, wasn't it?
That's a weird coincidence. I just recently heard somebody use that phrase "Bob's your uncle" in an episode of Monk. I thought it was strange to hear it on an American TV show.
