The Last Book You Read and Your Thoughts
Great book. I went to Seattle to see the movie, and I'm glad I'd read the story first. Seems like a limited release, catch it while you can on the big screen!
spoiler to book below
"but I wanted to kill him when he made them leave the shelter so soon!"
What am I reading? The Dexter novels! I'm so buzzing on the show, and wanted more. The books are superb, and just slightly different. Enough to wonder and enjoy!
2 Thumbs up!

Read The Lost Symbol a few weeks back and it was an absolute page turner. I was a little disappointed in the long and rather confusing ending, but the rest was quite thrilling in typical Dan Brown fashion.
I am currently reading In The Courts of the Sun by Brian D'Amato. It is a fictional account of the now famous 2012 syndrome everyone is aghast about. Only about 50 pages in and I find it VERY interesting.

Currently reading through the Kolbrin Bible... Don't mistake it for a Religious book just because it is named Bible... It's much different than a traditional bible... Very interesting reading...

I'm currently halfway through Cherie Priest's Boneshaker. Entertaining little book about all the good things in life - steampunk, sealed-off cities, zombies and airships! Good fun!

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
I didn't really care for the Lost Symbol as much. It kind of felt like the suspense part of the story existed so that it wasn't five hundred pages of Brown lecturing me, something that doesn't stop until the ending, of which was kinda stupid.
The last book I read was for class, and that was Their Eyes Were Watching God. It was boring at first, but now that I'm done with it I'm glad I read it. Though I don't plan on watching the movie.

I know you guys probably have read the heck out of it, but I've only ever seen the movies ... I'm currently about 3/4 the way through The Hobbit, and plan to read the LOTR trilogy. Unfortunately as I've grown older, I've gravitated away from books. One of the only things I didn't inherit from my Father was his love of books. I haven't even picked up the Hobbit in a while, because the only time I ever read actual books is when my internet is out for some reason.
But when I do read, I've been known to read stuff like Terry Brooks ... I read all the books of Shanarra up to the voyage of the Jerle Shanarra, and didn't make it past Antrax. I loved the Icewind Dale Trilogy, and it made me read every Drizzt book there was in exsistence. It got to the point that I felt like I was reading the books not for Drizzt anymore but to see if his nemesis who I can't remember his name, but he was a super master thief, and the only one who'd matched Drizzt and lived and was just as good as him. I read The Pandora Directive, nabbing it from the library when I was 16 or 17. Heck I got the stategy guide from the Library too for that game. Those were the books of my childhood. More recently, other than Lord of the Rings, I've hit and ran a lot of my father's old Star Wars novels that I inherited. He also had some Clancy novels and a whole series of books called Stony Man, which I have yet to touch.

You're going to love Lord Of The Rings...
They haven't made the movie The Hobbit, yet... It is supposedly in pre-production, there are several people rumored to be in it, Ron Perlman will be playing Thorin if the rumors are accurate...
Also if the rumors are true, The Hobbit will be done in 2 parts...

The Hobbit will be done in 2 parts ... it is official now.
Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Hugo Weaving (Elrond), and Andy Serkis (Gollum)
are all returning.
I thought Ron Pearlman was playing Beorn, but I could be wrong.
Guillermo Del Toro is Directing helping with scriptwriting.
Peter Jackson, Phillipa Boyens and Fran Walsh are the main script writers and Peter
Jackson will be producing.
Filming has been delayed until Summer of 2010, with a possible release of Dec 2011 or 2012.
Part two will be Dec 2012 or 2013.
Also, the parts that were missing from the book but that are expanded on in the LOTR appendix will be added to the movie, mainly.... where Gandalf keeps disappearing to. In the Hobbit, he says he is dealing with some guy named the Necromancer in Mirkwood Forest.....
I can say who it is Malloy since you saw the movies... but it is Sauron, who had the fortress of Dol Guldur in the south part of Mirkwood. He later retreats to Mordor for the LOTR.
This will all be dealt with in the new hobbit movie.... which makes me extremely excited to see it !!! hehe. Two bad we have to wait til the second part to see Smaug. That was also talked about online..... the second movie will not be a bridge between the hobbit and the lotr. The who story of the book will be told over the 2 movies.
Also Malloy.... I read Terry Brooks too. I read every book from First King to The Voyage Series. Didn't read the High Druid Series.... Terry brooks actually took his Running With the Demon Series and made that part of the ancient history of the world of Shannara. He is now writing the Whole History of the world to bridge the gap between the series over 10 books or so. Brooks also wrote the Magic Kingdom series which is kind of a Fantasy Comedy series.
I also recommend the Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
I really enjoyed that too.

Where did you get all the Official news??? According to www.imdb.com most of the cast are still rumors...
Though I wouldn't doubt the characters from Lord Of The Rings would return... Parts like that aren't usually turned down if a continuation of the story is filmed...

I remember reading the Hobbit back in early high school. I remember being bored with the intricate details Tolkien wrote with. But I'll bet it'll be a different read for me now that I have somewhat matured in literary appreciation.
The thing I'm looking forward the most for the film right now is who will be chosen to portray Bilbo. I've read the David Tennant of Doctor Who is rumored to play the role. Which I think would be fantastic as he's a tremendously talented actor.

I thought Ian Holmes was going to reprise his role as Bilbo. I certainly hope he does. I remember the animated Hobbit was I was a kid, actually I can't get that stupid "Greatest Adventure" Paul Williams song out of my head since last night. (thanks Malloy
) Reading the LOTR books has been a lot easier since watching the movies. It was so blasted hard to keep them all straight in my head before.
LOTR trilogy (actually there are 6 books in 3) is the most impressive fictional works I have ever read. And re-read many times.
Hey! I just bought Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton. After his death last year they went thru his stuff and found a manuscript and printed it. As soon as I am finished with my current reading project I will begin reading P.L.

The Lord of the Rings made for an excellent read, with the exception that the first half of Fellowship of the Ring was hideously boring. Every single page was worse then the last, up until the council of Elrond, which was really long and boring. It took me three attempts to suffer through the first half of Fellowship, and still want to keep reading. After that it's a slow and steady slope from absolute poo to a fresh start with the Two Towers, where the story finally gets interesting.
Riddle me this...Tolkien spends most of the prologue, like a good twenty pages or so, describing the Hobbits in complete detail. After a few chapters, there are only four hobbits until the end of Return of the King. Why do we need to know all this family history and types of Hobbits if they barely make cameos?
That's one reason I say that it's obvious that Tolkien was a linguist and not a storyteller. The second reason is Tom Bombadil.
