Overseer on Windows 7 32bit
Hi,
I've followed a few other threads here but I have not been able to solve 1 issue. I have copied the overseer folder from my DVD copy to my desktop and have replaced the files with the patched files, but an error pops up saying "unable to activate mpeg2 driver" and no video plays.
[I have installed DVD express and Rsx audio.]
I have changed the video configuration from standard mpeg to chromatic mpact II 3dvd and the video loads on startup but crashes right after.
Is there another step I missed?
I have a Acer aspire 9300 laptop if that helps

I followed what you stated here in another thread.
Basically I put the DVD into my drive copied the overseer folder onto my desktop. I downloaded the latest patch for tex murphy overseer and basically dragged and dropped the patch files into the overseer folder on my desktop -- replacing the files inside of it.
I do have the Cds but I would like to play the DVD version because of the higher quality videos.
Thanks for your help thus far.

that post came from someone who had success, I must point out most of the guides for installing overseer dvd version were wriiten for xp, & may not work for win 7. I use the cd version that I have burnt to dvd . It's fantastic but yes the movie sequences don't look as good but hey you don't suffer with crashes.
this is the way I install the dvd version,
install dvd express first, then install the overseer dvd with win 95 compatability. Install the dvd patch & then copy patched exe file & others to the working folder.
copy the rsx sound to the drive (do not install with the dvd) you also need to make changes to the audio in rxd sound.
I can't remember whether I ever tried it on win 7 or not but I can assure you I had a lot goes over the years without success with xp & vista.
I might give it another go myself to see if I have any luck.

okay I gave it a go on win 7 with dvd express & also moonlight elcard decoder which works also, but found it crashed when talking to chelsea in the first scene.
I downloaded the lastest elcard decoder & then I had video & no sound.
Tried xp & found it all worked but then I got mouse trails over the screen & was unusable,
by editing lock video from -1 to 1 usually works but it didn't this time.
Problem is the decoders worked on old operating systems & have big problems on new systems.
I found a dvd patch program written by a german guy last year, it contained elcard decoder package but they will not open in win 7,
sorry I could not be any help to you, just play the cd's & reduce your screen size to letter box & it doesn't look that bad.

NEWS FLASH,
I have overseer dvd version now working, windows 7 32
I copied the dvd disk & installed at the "c" drive & not program files
so it should look like this...
Copy overseer folder to C:
copy also the following folders from dvd
ATS
DATA
DIRECTX
RSX3D
copy all the other files into the overseer folder. Copy the patch files & paste them in the overseer folder. (except the update one)
I had the rsx3d folder copied to program files already & install dvd express also
Mute the midi in config panel in overseer.
So far I have not had any mouse problems at all.

And since DVD Express no longer exists {company that is}, there will be no updates to DVD Express {unless they are hacked versions, which aren't always bad}... So therefore Overseer is best played by the CD Version or the Download from GOG or on Older Systems using the original requirements...
Someone should make a detailed post about this in a new thread and then ask James to Sticky it so people stop wasting their time with a fruitless quest...
I played the DVD Version one time back in the day and to be honest I didn't think that the video was all that much better... True it was a bit smooth and looked a tad bit better, but the only reason I liked playing Overseer on the DVD was because with the DVD I didn't have to Disc Swap... Now with GOG's Download game I don't have to Disc Swap anyway...
Though on today's machines with the powerful video cards and flat monitors with better resolutions and whatnot, I guess the DVD would look much better than the CDs... But I ask you, is it really worth the hassle of constantly crashing the game for this???
Personally I don't think so... We play these games because they are Vintage of what we know as True Adventure Gaming... And the Pixels in the Video just add to that Vintage...

uninstalled the dvd express & reverted back to elcard decoder & set affinity to 1 processor .
still crashing during video scenes. dvd runs too slow for modern systems also.
I do beleive in the past people that had a hardware decoder card had much more success.
so the problems are with 1. decoder software & 2. rsx sound.
I cannot also rule out scratched dvd disks as over the years I was tempted several times to through the disk against the wall........LOL
I"m shoving this disk back in the cupboard again & continue with my stable dvd that I made from the cd's.
