I played a bit during the open beta. It's a game that's headed in the right direction, but it needs more polish. Like many other games of its kind, it seems to have been released too early.

It'll start to wear down on you eventually, you'll start to notice the grind.
Some good advice would be 1. if you want to enjoy the game do fleet battles, as they are more multiplayer and fun. 2. Don't buy things from the exchange that you could have otherwise gotten at a vendor (this applies to all basic weapons at all ranks, I made the mistake of buying some MKVs for when I hit commander only to discover there was actually a vendor for them) 3. if you're out of money sell loot via vendors or the exchange- then you'll have too much money.
When picking a character always consider what ship you want to be running, For Engineers you'll want a cruiser, for Tactical you want an Escort and for Science you want a Science Ship.
Engineers get Tanking buffs.
Tactical get DPS buffs.
Science get Heal/Aid buffs. (important, the Final buff for Science you get is AWESOME, it gives you 5 AI ships under your command).
You'll need to pick specific skills for your bridge officers, make sure you read what each one does and if you find something you don't like, go to the Power Vendor in SOL and buy new skills for your officers that work better.
Also realize that you gain Skill Points moreso from Missions than you do from just outright grinding. The missions themselves become grinding in a way. The missions are poorly written and are boring, don't bother reading any of the info, its mostly "BLAH BLAH BLAH HELP ME, BLAH BLAH BLAH Spock BLAH enterprise BLAH <<insert episode reference here>>"
Its also extremely annoying how they keep taking the server down every bloody day.

Actually the server is down right now for maintenance. Thanks for the advice, Cyberpunk. I'm still learning though. I don't even know the difference between a Vendor and the exchange or where to find them. I'm also trying to figure out how to change my character's appearance during the game. I feel i'm going to just spend some time at the Spacedock for a little while.
But, the good thing is I am more well versed in shields and ship power. Ground combat i've picked up a lot on also. The other night, I just deleted my character, didn't re-map any controls or anything and just started fresh. I think i'll stick with this one.
