OVERSEER AND WINDOWS 7

I have recently upgraded my computer to Windows 7 and purchased Tex Murphy - Overseer several years ago. I originally installed it on a machine running Windows 98 and it ran very well.
I tried about 5 years later (now) to install the same game on my new Windows 7 machine but all I get is the message "This game requires Windows 95 or later" !!!
Is there a solution to this problem as I would dearly love to try the game out again
I hope someone out there can help - many thanks
Arthur,
I am in the same boat. I've got all my original CDs for all 3 games. There's a hard way and an easy way to resolve this problem. I'm also currently running Windows 7.

Get virtual machine software such as VMware or DOSbox. It will emulate an older computer and you can install the old Operating System such as MSDOS or Windows95/98 and then use your discs to install the game on the virtual machine. I have done this using Microsoft Virtual PC software. It's not that hard to do but does take some time and effort.

Luckily for you Aaron Conners and Chris Jones have made a deal with http://www.gog.com. The website sells each of the Tex Murphy games already bundled with DOSbox emulator. The games are selling for about $10 eacy. You can download the game and it plays right after you install it. No disc swapping, no fuss. It's literally Tex right out of the box (but with no box). Proceeds are divided by gog.com and Aaron Conners. We on the board encourage others to buy it to support the creators of Tex Murphy.

Oh I almost forgot to mention that Chris and Aaron have started a new company called Big Finish Games. So far they have released two hidden object style games. If you are interested please go to www.bigfinishgames.com and try their free demos and see if you like them.

Hi,

only the installer seems to have a 32bit restriction. The game itself plays fine.

So either play it directly from CD/DVD or copy all files to HD and start it directly from the Overseer.exe. After installing rsx of course...

It was called rsx wasn't it? :?

Even managed to get the DVD version to run this way.

SpikedSoul,
Yes I did forget to mention it only works for 32bit machines. Thanks for the extra note. I kept forgetting a lot of the newer machines come with 64bit windows preinstalled. I installed 32bit windows on my desktop because I knew there weren't enough programs out there that took advantage of 64bit.

I used to keep an old computer lying around just for running Tex's games but finally had to let it go when it was dying on me. Figured I wouldn't be able to play Tex again.

I did get the Virtual PC method to work for me but that still required the disc swapping. I'm quite grateful for the latest solution from GOG.

Dear Samantha

Thank you ever so much for yor response - I bought Pandora Detective last night from GOG and downloaded it and it runs beautifully on my Windows 7 machine.
I am extremly grateful to you for your help

Arthur
Glad you are enjoying Pandora again. Here's another tidbit. If you type "jky" on the keyboard the game will display information about which Path your are on: A, B, or C. It will also tell you how many Good Guy Points you've accumulated.

Wow, wish I knew that about the path thing! The first time through I wound up with holodating. (I'm new to these games - can't believe I missed them in the 90s)

As for windows 7 - I've played the gog versions of UAKM, Pandora, and Overseer and all seem to work with the 64 bit. One note about Overseer is that you have to close explorer.exe (and every other little tiny background program) or the game will hang like 5 minutes in. At least, this happened for me.

cheers,
M
Actually you did good then... Holodating is the Ideal Tex ending... Path A is kind of like Tex's Dream Ending... And Path C is of course the Nightmarish Tex ending...

If you are indeed a True Tex fan, then you won't enjoy Path C at all, but I do recommend it for the Experience... But if you're a true Adventure gamer and you get pulled into your games like most of us here do, then Path C should make you feel bad inside...
But like I said, it is recommended for the experience, plus of course if you want to experience all 7 endings...

Yeah I think most people end up on the holodate ending. It's really really hard to get the A ending. I had to use the hint book to Path A but wow what an ending. Loved how much fun we got to have with Cheslee on Path A.

Steffd, welcome to the boards...

Might I suggest purchasing the games from www.gog.com??? All 5 of the Tex Murphy games are available for Download from there at very reasonable prices and best of all the money goes to the Original Creators of the Tex Murphy Series in hopes of bringing our Beloved PI back to the computer screen...

Also if you haven't been following closely I might also suggest this new company www.bigfinishgames.com... This company was opened by none other than Aaron Connors and Chris Jones themselves... And this is the company that we will hopefully see a New Tex Murphy Game from...
