Hey Guys in Europe

Demonlayer, Fred, and Netroam are you seeing anything of this gigantic cloud of volcanic ash? What does it look like from your vantage point?

Haven't seen it other than photos in newspapers, but it's messed up all the flights here for the last three days. My best friend was supposed to fly back yesterday but every airport is still shut.

They're in southern spain somewhere and there is like one internet cafe in town which everyone has been hogging to sort flights home, so they asked me to look into it for them.

The earliest flights home are next weekend and they cost a bomb, so they're now going to come back by bus - a 33 hour bus journey with a 3 year old as well, and the bus doesn't leave until next friday, so they're having to stay there another week.

Apparently the hotel is being nice and saying that they can stay a few more days for free, but they don't know how much more a few more days is. It does sound like a nightmare for them, but now that they have their journey home sorted hopefully they can enjoy the sun for the next few days.

Has it messed anything up your side of the pond?

So far I have not heard anything yet. I'm in the middle of the US so if anything happens it will be the East coast that feels it first.

I'm not too worried about the Iceland Volcano screwing with us... It's the Yellowstone Volcano that I'm worried about... It is about 50,000 years overdue and with all the world activity going on, I wouldn't be surprised if it goes sometime within the next couple of years...

And if Yellowstone goes, that is going to be Massive... It will destroy 1/4 of the country, along with a huge chunk of Canada and reek havoc over another 2/3 of the country, destroying massive amounts of wildlife and resources...

This planet is shaking itself apart and we are all going to be witnesses to it...

Well I don't know, there have been a rash of earthquakes lately around the globe. I wonder if 2012 isn't coming early.

I'd rather not witness the destruction of the Earth. Better to die in the first 20 minutes than have to go through all the pain and suffering that would follow.

I'm the sort of misanthropic, cynical and cold-hearted bastard who would rather live through the end of civilization (Let's face it, the planet's gonna stay, even if the change will end our current societies and their various structures and, possibly, human life.) and if possible, I would like a grandstand seat and witness the greatest event in human history since more than one family started living within a mile of each other.

...Anyway.

No ashes here yet, just photos so far. And all planes are stranded here as well.

John Cleese was in Oslo, actually, and he hired a taxidriver to ferry his british ass to Brussels for a lump of money bigger than my head. I guess he really needed to get home

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
I agree Fred, I would like to be among the last to go as well, if the human race is gonna die out...

I don't know about the end of the world and all that, but I do know that Yellowstone is well overdue and she is a biggie... If she goes it will certainly restructure the earth in one way or another...
Considering the USA supplies so many 3rd World countries with much need food, such as grains and veggies, if Yellowstone hit, you can be guaranteed that those countries will go without and surely perish, because we will be unable to do all that we normally do... Yellowstone's Volcano would destroy over 50% of our Farming lands... Anything we have left would be needed to feed ourselves and very little would be left for those that depend on us...

Going to be a very sad time when Yellowstone finally blows... According to some of the best minds on the planet, the estimates of death within the first year following Yellowstone's Eruption could quite possibly be over a billion, the Eruption itself would kill millions and then the Starvation to follow, it would just be horrific to witness...

Man you guys are downers. Well Baf, I'll be seeing Yellowstone in a month. I'll report back how it's looking.

Fred you've probably like that British show Survivors. It's about a disease that wipes out about 95% of the Earth's population. You get to see how the survivors fight it out for food, shelter and supplies. It's a really depressing dystopia view of humans. My husband loves this show.

I was out there just a couple of Weeks ago... It looks just fine, until it Erupts... And there will be very little warning when that happens...

Well, here in Denmark all flights have also been cancelled for a while, but I just read a piece of news today that the upper airspace (from 35.500 feet and up) has just opened 1 hour ago whereas the lower airspace will remain closed until 2 AM (another 14 hours to go)

As for me - in my part of Denmark I haven't seen any ash clouds at all, but as for the news I read, it would travel through the northern part of Jutland and south east to Sealand, so it will never pass through my part of the country. Or that's at least how I understood the article :)

Anyway - a lot of Danes are stranded around Europe and the authorities expect costs to be over 1 billion DKR.

We still have no planes - they think they might re open in the next few days, but I'm beginning to wonder if it will affect food - if planes aren't flying in, is there going to start to be a food shortage?

Let's hope not eh?
David
Is the Chunnel still open? I assume there must be Ferrys across the channel too.
