Goldeneye Returns (sort of)...

I'm sure we all have some enthusiastic memories of the 1997 game, Goldeneye 64. In fact, i'd go as far as saying that maybe Jim (when he was a young guy) might have some memories of this. Activision have purchased the rights to re-image of the original classic, but with a few twists. On a positive, the graphics are improved but are also faithful to the original. The weapons and characters appear to be the same so I imagine that the "feel" of the controls will also be similar. Artistically, Goldeneye 2010 is to Goldeneye 1997 what the 2009 Star Trek film was to the classic era: aesthetically slick and modern but essentially conveying the same idea.

However, there is a twist. Pierce Brosnan is not voicing Bond, Daniel Craig is. While I like Daniel Craig as Bond, part of the magic which made Goldeneye was the fact it was a Brosnan film (and perhaps his best while in the role). I think this decision kind of undermines Brosnan's legacy to the film. Again, no disrespect to Craig's decision to lend his voice, but I doubt if Brosnan were approached to lend his voice again he would do so with no hesitation as to this day he still speaks fondly about his experience as Bond. Besides, for the From Russia With Love game, we had Connery, not Brosnan.

However, to me, there is one issue that annoys me greatly: WII EXCLUSIVE. On a positive, there is talk of a DS port, I have one of those so MAYBE there's some hope. But it's a shame that to this day the Goldeneye game is still selfishly being branded as Nintendo only. The sales for a PC and PS3 release would be phenomenal. Hell, i'd even accept a digital distribution, i'm not even asking for a box or artwork!

I saw this a few days back. I have mixed emotions, especially when it is going to be Wii exclusive. In my opinion for it to have been worth it, it really needed 2 things: the return of Brosnan, and for it to be released on a platform with a little more horsepower to ensure it looks as good as it can.

My thoughts exactly! Why they're keeping this Wii exclusive is a mystery. Rare (developers of the original) are now owned by Microsoft. With Activision behind it, automatically you cover PC and XBOX, even if only a digital distribution release. If you think the demand for Goldeneye in those two markets doesn't exist, you're a moron.
I think the game's exclusiveness to the Wii is MGM's bid to seek new, younger fans for the aging franchise as the Wii is considered by many to be a family friendly, dare I say children's, gaming system.

I saw an ad last week (think it was in a comic book) where there's a new Young Bond book series out now, again targeted toward a younger audience, full of early-teen pre-007 exploits that helped shape his character. And who would be the better choice for voice actor for a new generation of Bond fans than the person currently playing Bond on the big screen, the face of a full reboot of the franchise?

Apart from re-casting the bond role, I actually agree with you there, Hammerhead. I think the Wii would open up the market to a family audience. Let's face it, entertainment for the whole family sells. The children love it for all of its bells and whistles but the parents can at least justify some expenditure on it due to an appeal for them. All that is fine. But I can't see why having the game on other platforms simultaneously would undermine any of that. If anything, sales would soar even further.
Even though I only have a Wii, I think it's wrong to put a game exclusively on one console. Personally I've always been and always will be a PC gamer first and foremost.

I can only imagine they must have decided the money they would have made in sales on the other machines would not have justified the cost to port the game over to other consoles (maybe they would have only broken even). That's the only thing I can guess.

I think families tend to have Wiis and adults tend to buy Xbox and Playstations for themselves. At least that's the trend I've noticed with hard-core gamers.

Would have to agree that Goldeneye without Brosan just isn't right. I did think the name Onatopp was hilarious in the movie. Not since Pussy Galore has a name been that silly.

I cannot tell you how many hours of my life I spent playing Goldeneye (both the single player and multiplayer) on the N64. I think it may be my favorite FPS.

I am so bummed that it's a Wii exclusive. I have a PS3 and probably cannot talk the wife into buying another gaming system. Maybe they'll see the light eventually and make it a PS3 download...<keeps fingers crossed>
My wonder is that it could be a licensing issue. The original Goldeneye belongs to Rare and Nintendo, and at the time of it's release Rare belonged to Nintendo so the level design and code belonged to them with the image of Bond being licensed. Daniel Craig being Bond in this remake makes sense, from a legal standpoint, as Pierce would have to have his image licensed separately. Activision already owns the Bond license, so they would be able to use the current image of James Bond.

(Before I continue, I'm kind of making this up as I go. It makes sense! Kind of.)

As to why it's only on the Wii? Well, my first guess would be due to the Nintendo owning the license, but then this Goldeneye is a remake. It's not like they're porting the game. My second theory is that because the Wii is $#it it takes less time to make a game for the Wii, and that sometime a year or so after it'll see release on other systems, like No More Heroes.

Also, if there were no exclusive games, there would be no reason to buy one particular console. Hell, there would be no reason to buy a Wii, cause every Mario game would look 100 times better on it's superior console brethren.

I'm not excited about this. It was good when it came out, but I've moved on. I don't like playing first person games on consoles anymore.

I agree that I'm not really into FPS games on consoles anymore. But, if it ever became available on PS3 I would have to pick it up, if for no other reason than the nostalga factor. I'd probably be disappointed with how it has aged, but I wouldn't let that stop me. :)
Gee not a lot of Wii love but that seems to be the way these days. I have all 3 main consoles and love my Wii just as much as my 360 and PS3. Those that say there isnt any great games for it are just outright wrong or havent played a lot of what is available. Anyway each to their own.
In regards to Goldeneye I am pretty happy with the announcement and I thought what was shown at the E3 conference looked pretty cool. I am also fairly sure that Nintendo have some sort of control over the Goldeneye game license, so thats why it might not be multiplatform. Furthermore I am damn excited for a lot of other stuff shown at show. New Donkey Kong Country, new NBA Jam, new Zelda, new Metroid and the 3DS sounds like it is gonna be awesome. It was a good show for Nintendo.
I also thought that RAGE looks awesome as well. Did anyone else see the video footage. Check this link to have a look.

Should be great!
I'm not opposed to the Wii. I just had the budget to buy one system and decided on the PS3. The main reason is that I love the Gran Turismo series and wanted Gran Turismo 5, which at this point may be released sometime after I die from old age.
I haven't been a big fan of the Bond video games... I guess maybe I'm expecting too much... I mean they are stellar films, so naturally I expect the games to be so as well...

Well Baf, Goldeneye is still considered, to this day, as one of the greatest games of all time. So I think it did the films a lot of justice.
