Question for Cub, et. al.
That depends if you actually think you are going to fill up the whole 1 TB. I've got 450 GB and am using about 30% of that right now.
Music files don't usually take up as much space as video files, but I don't know exactly how much space you are going to need.
I tell my husband I don't see the point of owning a Mac every chance I get.

If you can save money reducing the size of the HDD then that's even better... but beware: Audio projects can take up FAR MORE than you assume.
For example, I have a series of instrument plug-ins for my audio software, and one of them (a simple Steinway piano) is 80GB on its own. So while it is not so much the music you are creating that is taking up the space, it's the plug-ins and instruments that do. So depending on what you are working with, you may indeed require more space that you first thought.
Also, using on-board sound NOT an option. The latency's will be horrible.

Yes I was worried about that too. I would think for working with making your own music files you'd want to have a separate audio card. That might add another couple of hundred but would probably be worth it. But I've never done a thing so have no idea what the scope of the project is going to be. Is this a hobby or for serious work?
Yikes 80gb that's a lot for just one thing!

Even with simple instrumentation or sampling an on-board audio solution would be like trying to nail jell-o to the wall (to paraphrase a Tex Murphy quote). You will get distortion, break-ups, and really high latencys (the time it takes between pressing a key on the keyboard and it actually producing sound). You can get some pretty cost effective external sound card solutions these days, so shop around.sam10100 wrote:Yes I was worried about that too. Well, now I'm rethinking the need for a laptop. Although it sounds convenient, I'm not sure I'd take it much of anywhere. Whenever I travel and need a computer, I have a laptop from work. And, the idea of building a computer is growing on me. I think my audio software is arriving today, so I ought to hurry up and make up my mind.
Yeah that's what drove me to build my own computer too. I've got a laptop from work for traveling. Since most of my traveling is for work, I seldom have time to play anyway, and if I'm traveling for fun, I've got better things to do than play with my computer.
That being said, if anything goes wrong with your computer you'll only have yourself to yell at.
