Nintendo 3DS specs revealed!

The specs for the 3DS have been unleashed:

http://kotaku.com/5644430/report-ninten ... s-revealed

CPU: 2 x 266MHz ARM11
GPU: PICA200 133MHz GPU by DMP
RAM: 64MB
Video RAM: 4MB
Storage: 1.5GB Flash-based

So this makes it more powerful than the PSP and possibly more so than the iPhone?

Also, if the flash based memory is so large, does this mean we could possibly be installing our games? Perhaps there will be an online Virtual Console store? Save games to flash memory from the carts?

But it's looking great for handheld technology. We've gone from 16MB of RAM (Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi) to 64 with almost 3 times as much CPU power! Years ago you'd need a giant PC case to house all of this in.

I'm personally hoping that the large space is to make room for the Virtual Console titles that have been made available for the Wii. There's so many cool Super Nintendo titles that have been made available through that service. In fact, if we have full Virtual Console access via the 3DS, i'll have a very small library of 3DS carts because the Virtual Console store will keep me going for years (literally - there's so many awesome titles there).
I want to play the new Paper Mario game that is coming out for it :)

That's one hell of a 2-dimensional sense of humour you have there

Yes, I had to.
I'm thinking that the storage is simply for Saved Games... Though it would be awesome to be able to Download games for the DS...

I am sure Sony has something up its sleeve too.

It is amazing how fast the hand held market is moving now.

The original Game Boy was around for 12 years with only a couple incarnations of the same system essentially.

GBA was only around for 5 and now the DS was only around for 4....??

This market is beginning to advance at light speed.

You can already download games for the DS - the DSi has been able to do it since its release, but the games aren't generally as good as buying a £30 game. Having said that, the downloadable games are about £2, £5 and £8 a game, so that's what takes up the storage.

My DSi holds about 10 -15 downloadable games of various sizes, so this new one will be able to hold a lot more I guess. You can also save them onto a memory card when your disc is full.

Major update for the 3DS concerning price, release dates and features:
http://au.gamespot.com/news/6280013.htm ... Btitle%3B1

Basically, you can expect to pay around $250(AUD) for this. I think this is pretty decent given what they have in store for us under the hood. It's due in Japan in February of 2011.

I'm actually surprised at the release date after there being so much talk of a November release date in Japan followed by the remainder of the world by about April. It looks as though we may not get ours until about June.

But i'm glad they're releasing the console in black, that looks awesome. I was dreading having to make a choice between cherry or cobalt blue. The bundle of the 2GB SD card is awesome which also persuades me to give a thumbs up to the price along with the impressive on board technology.

My only disappointment: virtual console. I was really hoping for some NES and SNES games. The article seems to limit availability to GameBoy and GameBoy Advance titles There are so many SNES games that would have rocked on 3DS.
