I don't know if any of you guys will know anything bout this stuff but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.
I just purchased an XLR condenser mic as well as a sound mixer and for the life of me I can't get the darned thing to make any noise.
My MXL 990 mic requires phantom power so I have it plugged into the xlr slot on my Behringer mixer. I have the +48v phantom power switch on. I have my rca to 3.5mm going from my CD/tape out to my mic input on my computer. And I am getting nothing. Nothing other than static when I turn up the knobs really high, but it will do that even without the mic plugged in.
I've tried every level and setting that I could think of on the machine and on the computer and nothing. My only though it that it may not like my XLR transformer that I used to make my mic cord adaptable.
My other thought is that one of the two objects may be broken, but I don't know any way of testing which one it would be.

Well, I use a 990 and 991 and my initial response was going to that you need phantom power, but it looks like you have that covered. I assume that the power through the mixer to the mic is working. I use an ART Phantom II power supply for my mics, but I don't know why your mixer phantom power setting wouldn't be working. Have you tried running the mic to the mixer and running it out to something else (headphones, etc.) to make sure that the mic sound is getting to the mixer? This might help narrow down where in the chain the issue is. But, you may have me stumped.
Yeah pizza, thats what I was going to suggest. I advice is to get a good pair of headphones and isolate the problem. Check the board first to make sure you are hearing it there. Then check your computer's sound drivers and settings to make sure the problem isn't there. I know that I had some problems when I switched to Windows 7 because it gave me weird results. The audio level would just climb when I turned it up from the Windows 7 audio level. But I did some searching on the internet to find drivers and then everything was great. But give that a try, and I think you'll find the problem. Later.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I may have finally made some headway with the tech support guy. He has informed me that the XLR adapter will not transfer the phantom power. Hopefully he is right.
