Unique Christmas Tradition Thread

I thought we could list any Christmas traditions we have that are somewhat unique. Not like "we get up early to open presents." More like "we wrap all of our presents in old newspapers" or "we go to Uncle Eddie's and play Monopoly all day."

So I'll start: We have a family party on Christmas Eve and I make chili. Six pounds of it. Six pounds of meat, actually, so the final weight is more. I'm making it today so the flavors meld overnight.
Never too late for coffee, never too early for beer.
We celebrate it on the evening of the 24th here, actually. On christmas morning I enjoy certain cartoons that air every christmas morning. Sort of a tradition.

If I get the chance I also see a norwegian film called Flåklypa Grand Prix, which, although unrelated, just feels very christmassy to me. I think it's called Pinchcliffe Grand Prix in english, though. From 1975. And still the best norwegian film ever made. It just didn't survive the translation process, sadly.

We usually have turkey. And medisterkake, ribbe and julepølse! Mmh-mmh-MMM!!

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Well this one is about presents but it could still be unique. Me and my family were allowed to open 1 present early on Christmas Eve. I would glance the shapes of those presents over. Also I think every year we have Christmas cookies with icing.
I put the TV on TNT at 8pm EST on the 24th and it doesn't change until 8pm on Christmas day/night... TNT always runs A Christmas Story for 24 hours every year...

On the 24th we also go out to dinner because it happens to be my mother's birthday...

Other than that it's basically a normal Christmas around here...

no xmas traditions for me I am afraid, I can't get into xmas this year haven't even put up a tree yet. Doesn't even feel like xmas. Usually at night I see all the xmas beetles flying around but this year there isn't any around. We had very strange weather here lately so maybe thats the reason.

Strange weather all across the world right now for some reason... California is getting hit with so much rain, they haven't seen this much rain in over a decade... Causing all kinds of landslides, people's houses sinking down into rivers and whatnot, crazy stuff going on...

Across the pond they are getting storms they don't normally get as well...

I grew up with a unique idea which was great fun growing up.

We woke up one morning after a few years of opening presents under the tree to find all the presents from Father Christmas had disappeared!

Had we been robbed? Had we been bad children? No, the presents were hidden around the house in four other rooms (there were four of us).

All the presents had half a christmas card on them, cut at different angles etc and we had a bag full of the other halves of the cards. We were given four cards at a time and spent two to five minutes in a room before we had to come back and regroup.

So we went into a room and had to look - under cushions, inside cupboards, on top of curtain rails and so on. If you found a present, you had to check whether it was for your by seeing if the cards you had matched the one on the present. If it did, it was yours, if it didn't you had to put it back where you found it.

If you found a present, you brought it to the living room and got another half card so you still had four (there were lots of small presents!) The idea of only having a few cards at a time meant that you might later have to check all the presents you'd found earlier.

It was good fun and something I hope to do if/when we have children one day.

wow what a fun kids game, never heard that one . reminds of of the easter egg hunt looking for the eggs hidden around the backyard. your parents were very smart to invent that game.

The same it's been for the last 25 years for me (at least in the 25 years i've been living) where the three of us, my immediate family, go to a restaurant for lunch and then retreat back home where I spend the day with the presents and parents. Maybe an evening Christmas movie or Christmas episode of a favourite TV show.

One tradition I miss is that on Christmas Eve, with a family that was very close to us, we'd go over to their house. They're an Italian family and would make all their own food: ice cream, mince tarts, egg nogg - the works. We'd eat at their place, go to mass and then carols by candlelight in the park. Then we'd go back to their house, have drinks, laugh and I'd play LAN games with the relatives. Sadly that tradition died as early this year, there was a divorce in that family which has changed the dynamic dramatically. But the memories prevail.

However, ever since I was 20, given that i'm no longer a child, a new tradition has been established: boxing day shopping :)

The only problem with Demon's Awesome sounding game is you have to have, I would say at least 3 kids in order for it to be of any decent fun, Demon said there were 4 of them, so I imagine it was a blast... I only have the one so I can't see him enjoying it, but it is something I will definitely recommend to friends and family who have 3 or more children...

Humbled Apologies...
