Zork!
Zork: Zero was the fifth game in the Zork series and, as I recall (it's been a while since I've played it), involved going back in time to stop the wizard Megaboz. It goes a lot more into the history of the Zork world and the Flatheads.
Also, I have not played the Enchanter triology or Wishbringer. They are stand-alone games made between Zork III and Beyond Zork that take place in the Zork world, but I don't know much about them.

I think you can play the FMV games without having played the text games. There are some references to the prior games in the FMV games, but I think you'll know enough to play them, especially if you by the games from Gog and get the additional materials. Those should give you enough background to play the games and enjoy them and understand the storyline.
