With my 100th Post, I bring you a warning ...
And it is as follows. If you're a horror movie buff, do not, under any circumstances, watch Hostel. Unless you can handle the squeamish stuff. I made the mistake of watching it today. And all I can say is ... well see that is the thing. I didn't say anything. I went and watched that movie at two in the afternoon, and I didn't talk for like four hours after watching it. Literally. I seen things that will never be removed from my head.
Yes, I should have known better before watching it. But you see, as a self described horror movie buff, I figured I'd have to watch it. I regret it. Oh man do I regret it. It's nothing but torture chamber horror. And very graphic at that.
I'm not addressing those who seen the preview, and said .. "pff, not a chance" .. this goes out to everyone who said "Hey, it's Tarentino .. I have to see it." ... do yourself a favor. Don't. Unless you want to be shocked to death.
Yep. Had to get that off my chest. Okay .. much better now.

Hmm... well as much as I appreciate the warning, you have kind of only made me want to see it more!
But then again, if this is coming from a seasoned horror film buff, then it must be pretty darn vulgar.
Who knows, I may see it, becuase I have seen films like Irreversable, which disturbed me to no end!
-Cub. =o)

You know, I kinda figured it would. And it's not to say that I haven't seen things that were scarier. There have been much scarier movies. This one, it was the gore factor that did it for me. I never ... ever... will see it again. Ever. You see it, you let me know what you think!

Thanks for the heads up Malloy.
I am a big horror fan myself, but I was kinda on the fence on that one. Wolf Creek too. Methinks I will at least wait for the DVD, if I go for it at all. Usually though, I take my horror flicks on the BIG screen, for the extra "intensity". Nothing's more fun that a packed house of skittish but enthused movie goers.
It's funny, bring on the Stephen King/ Splatterpunk/ Night of the living whatever
, love it. But I can't even so much as watch 10 minutes into an episode of COPS before getting sick and upset.
Again thanks.
Jen

Is it worse than Event Horizon? If I lived through Event Horizon as a 10-yr old boy, could I endure Hostel?
I need to know this because I didn't even knew that such a movie was being released and now I'm hyped to see it

"Wer ein holdes Weib errungen..."
"My religion is the one in which Haydn is pope" - by me.
"Set a course, take it slow, make it happen."

My impression, from the previews, is that Hostle is going to be something like Saw, but perhaps with more gore. Did you see Saw or Saw II and how would you compare it to them?
A description that I read indicated that the movie slowly builds in intensity, and that the torture and gore doesn't arrive until later in the film. Is this true, or is it gory from the get-go?
I see all my movies (especially horror or action) from the front row. Should I bring a raincoat for this one?

No, it's true. The gore doesn't get going until later in the movie. Actually the beginning of the movie is your average american teenagers visiting Amesterdam. Just imagine a lot of tits, ass, and drugs, you'll know the beginning of the movie quite well. It's almost a spoiler, actually.
However, in comparison to SAW? Hah! Saw was child's play to me! I loved SAW. It wasn't even half bad compared to this. I never did get to see Saw 2, but let me just say, yeah, completely blows Event Horizon off the gore meter. I really can tell you, although it doesn't come until late in the film there are .. ::counts:: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ... 6 7, 8 parts that will never let me sleep right again. And that's no $#it.
When I went to see it in the theatre, it didn't help matters any that the only, and I do mean, the *only* person that was in the theatre for that showing of it was me. It was kind of creepy to have a humongus gargatuan screen in front of you, and all the surround sound ... and it's like they're playing it just for you. It would have helped to have someone there, I guess.
I really, really can't compare it to anything I have watched. Now, granted, I haven't seen Wolf Creek yet ...
I just, like I said before, was turned off by the sort of what Jen mentioned. Cops has too much reality in it for me too. And that's what this movie seems to put into your head. The reality of torture, and the futility of trying to escape from it.
And just wait till you see what the storyline is! Just to fathom it, is to vomit.
Ye have been warned!
::Watches as they all go flocking off to see it ... shaking his head::

Tarantino produced Hostel, and the guy who did Cabin Fever (I believe it was), Eli Roth, directed it.
I have really started watching a lot of horror films in the last few months--NetFlix is great for providing the classics. With that in mind, let me say that Saw & Saw 2 were wonderful. Were they horror in the Freddy & Jason sense? No. The reason I loved them was that they were psychological, did not rely on simple "boo!" tactics, and they were, in my opinion, innovative with their take on the genre. I thought it was an original approach to what otherwise could've just been another silly movie. I'd recommend it for the strong-stomached.

I just got back from Hostel.
First of all, I'm the kind of guy who will faint if someone just cuts their finger.
But that's in real life. Movie gore doesn't seem to bother me. And I see a lot of movies (about 200 a year, at the theater.)
That being said, Hostel wasn't too bad. I would guess that it was a little less than half as gory as I was expecting. About 40 percent. The reason it wasn't so bad is because it really didn't show much 'going in'. You would see the tool approaching, then it would go out of view, and you would see the victim's feet shaking or mouth screaming, but you usually didn't see the source of the pain until after. I was thankful for that.
I would say that Wolf Creek might have been a slight bit more gory.

I finally got to see Hostel today and I'm pretty disappointed. I don't know... I just wanted a few more things to be cut off, more torture...you know, the fun stuff
I just expected more. It was okay though.
On another note, I'm a big Saw/Saw II fan. Looking forward to Saw III. The cast and crew was at Haunt X this weekend and they talked a little about it! Sounds great!
