My Free Tex GOG download

K... So I just got my survey to pick which tex Game I want a free download of, but the problem is that I already bought them all when they were on sale before the campaign was announced.

So I want to give mine away.

I was thinking, that if I am going to do this, that the best one to pick is Pandora, since it will be the most similar to the new game with the multiple paths and is by far the best in the series.

Although, some of the jokes play off of some of the stuff in UAKM and are not as funny unless you have played UAKM. Plus, UAKM is better at introducing tex....

so I am torn.

Any thoughts?
Thanks.
Matt
Back when the GOG sale happened during the Kickstarter there was some discussion as to which one newcomers should go for. For example some thought about trying Overseer since it retold the first ever Tex Murphy game. I explained a bit about each and that Overseer is great but does have the more limited scope drawback. One responce I got:
Thanks for the detailed description. I thought about starting with Overseer, but Pandora seems like a more interesting choice, I love non-linear adventures.
I started with Under A Killing Moon but I probably would reccomend Pandora Directive to a newcomer. I may be a bit biased though. I think it does strike a nice overall balance however. Some find UAKM heavy on the humour side and others find Overseer too far on the serious side etc. I personally love them all though, but just mentioning some of the reactions I've seen. But they're all solid games of course, so I wouldn't fret too much. If you love Pandora the most and want to share that love then I say go for it but thats just me.

I would just go with UAKM... Gives the person a taste of what Tex is all about... Plus I feel that the humor is a bit better... Don't get me wrong, I love Pandora and it is my favorite, but for humor I have to take UAKM...

For the most part {not everyone, but most} if they don't like UAKM I don't think they'll like any of them at all...
If given a choice I think any new player should start off with UAKM... Just my opinion...

I'd recommend "Pandora" over UAKM because I thought the production values were a bit higher... frankly, you really ought to just buy all three (UAKM, Pandora, and Overseer) and play them in that order to really get a feel for the storyline. (Also, make sure to listen to the existing Tex Murphy "radio" episodes if you haven't already.)

This may be a stupid question--I registered and paid in at the $250 / "Beta Tester" level, and I don't think I got a survey yet... I'm eagerly awaiting updates. Should I worry? (Who should I contact if I should worry?)

Opinions are like a-holes, every body has one.

I am a big fan of the Tex Murphy games. I too bought all of them from GOG. I still have the original DOS CD games I bought in the last millennia.

My first introduction to Tex Murphy was "Under A Killing Moon". I was hooked by its whole noir atmosphere while telling a good story well. The introduction scene in UAKM cast its spell throughout the game. As much as I enjoyed the subsequent games, the spirit established by UAKM seems not to be present in PD and O.

I have bias. I find the established UAKM spirit ever present as I play PD and O. I doubt, had I played PD or O before I played UAKM, I would have played other Tex games.

Keeping in mind, advice is for those who give it and not for those who receive it: "Under A Killing Moon" would be the best introduction to the Tex Murphy games for any person who has not played the TM games.

This may seem strange. I stayed with this 'Tex Murphy Message Board' BECAUSE I was so taken by "Under A Killing Moon." I cannot explain it. Over the years the silliness of Tex in UAKM just made this a worthwhile place to hang out.

I tried to play UAKM for the first time last year and it didn't really grab me, I think because of the clunky interface - it was a bit of a struggle to play. I still played a good few hours of it but I lost my save games when my hard drive died and I never felt like going back and doing it all over again. It wasn't until I tried Overseer this year that I got hooked on Tex Murphy and was able to go back and really appreciate UAKM and then PD. A bit topsy turvey but I got there in the end :)

I'm going to be giving my GOG credits to a friend and I'm wondering how to best introduce them to it. I know they'd be into it if they're able to give it a chance - might tell them to start with PD because that really stood out to me as excellent right from the start.
This other topic is related if you want some other past viewpoints. litlkeck wanted to know which game in the Tex series to first introduce his wife to:

lestat already has all the games so they're just going to gift/donate the game to someone else and introduce them to the series. But they only get 1 GOG game download option at their donation level.

The survey is just for the $50 "Credit to download your choice of one vintage "Tex Murphy" game from Good Old Games". At $250 you will of surpassed the $150 reward "Credit to download all 5 vintage "Tex Murphy" games from Good Old Games". Since you don't need to pick one game (you're getting them all) there will be no survey.

So no need to worry. This was also confirmed on the Tex Murphy Backers forum on the Big Finish games website.

There was another survey though for T-Shirt sizes and such, did you get that one? If you have any questions try asking via the Big Finish Games website.

If you want updates then keep an eye on the Backer Section, you can get to it by logging into the Big Finish Games website and clicking on the Mutant League button.

I think I am going to go with Pandora... even though UAKM is a good introduction, Pandora stands out from the rest and will grab someone's attention right away.

Thanks guys.

Now, any suggestions on how to pick who gets this? The webmaster at Big Finish suggested maybe a contest where everyone pools their games together....

I am guessing anyone on this site probably has the game already.

I was thinking of giving it to one of the under $50 backers, but I have no idea how to do this fairly.

Anybody got a suggestion?

Thanks again.
Matt
During the Kickstarter campaign the owner of the Steam group gave away some games. They posted a contest on some sites like GOG forums (since everyone would of had a GOG account) and the Steam group that whenever someone saw a certain backer amount or donation amount and were the first to contact them about it, they'd win. Another time was simple first come, first serve. Fastest to post got the game. I guess other options are a Tex Murphy related quiz, make it something easy to Google since you are trying to find people who don't know the series yet. Or the quiz could be related to detectives, noir, neo-noir etc. in general. If they know the answer they're a fan of those genres and might appreciate the game. As Pandora has a lot of sci-fi themes it could be a sci-fi related question.

They also posted on Adventure Gamers but there wasn't much interest as everyone seemed to have most adventure games already including Tex Murphy. Worth a shot though. But there might be other forums and websites where people might be less likely to know the series yet. Are you on other websites, forums or any social networks like Facebook groups, Twitter, Tumblr etc. you could post on? With it being Pandora, you could also consider gamers on X-file fansites / forums / groups. Since when it first came out in the 90s it struck a chord with many who were also big X-Files fans at the time.

Cathy and I were both introduced to the 'new' Tex with Pandora - I can't speak for Cathy, but Pandora was always bigger and better for me, so you've made a good choice.

As for fairness - go with what your gut tells you. Are you allowed to donate it?

I agree with Pandora. Due to techinical difficulties when I bought my first Tex games (the Tex Murphy Double Feature), I couldn't get UAKM to work on my computer, so I jumped in with PD. I have since gone back and played UAKM, but PD is such a great game. I like UAKM for the nostalgia factor, but in my humble opinion, PD just blows it away.
yep Pandora is the way to go

tex murphy is back in town
I might just do a post for it.... first to message me get its. This is probably the least amount of work for me, and it seems fair.

You think I could do it on here and get a hit? or most likely no...

I don't visit any other forums really.

If not here, do you think I might get a hit with the backers only section of big finish?

I want to make this the least amount of hassle for myself.

Thanks everyone for your input.
Matt
I'd make a post on GOG forum. Might get someone who hasn't ever played a Tex Murphy game before and didn't know about the Kickstarter either. Might encourage them to get the rest of the series and the new game when it comes out.

Other than that though, anywhere will do. Tex Murphy General Discussion for example on Big Finish forum, so even if someone missed the boat with the Kickstarter, they have a chance.
