Black Mesa Source
So they're finally releasing the remake of Half-Life 1, then? Took their time

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Eight years is not a terribly long time for a game of this type to be made (even for established studios), especially when it was done with only a few people with no pay. Also, they only released the first 14 of the 18 chapters. The release of the last 4 chapters, including notably the Xen level, is TBD as of now.
To the uninitiated (they may be some), Black Mesa is a remake of Half Life 1 using the engine of Half Life 2. The visual improvement compared to Half Life 1 is significant. But since the Half Life 2 engine is 8 years old itself, Black Mesa would seem noticeably dated compared to today's FPS.

Am I missing something here? Then what exactly is the item Half-Life: Source on Steam? I thought that was half-life remade with the half-life 2 engine? Never picked it up, but this Black Mesa thing seems very similar to something already on the market. Am I missing something?
I'm not fat ... I'm festively plump.
Half Life: Source is indeed a remake, but isn't a very good one, and that is what prompted the Black Mesa team to do another remake -- with new content (textures, models, music, voice acting , etc.). To use an analogy, Half Life Source is like a rerun of an old TV show whereas Black Mesa is a TRUE remake, in that it is similar to the original game but it has all new content.Mr. Thomas Malloy wrote:Am I missing something here? *raises hand* Not an FPS gamer but I have enjoyed watching some with a story to them or atmosphere. A lot of people I follow were playing this on Twitch TV (game broadcaster site) and I think the start area with all the background voice acting adding a real feel of a running organisation (complete with office politics) was a nice attention to detail. Overall it seems like a very impressive effort for a fan-made production.kevin_y wrote:To the uninitiated (they may be some).
(Ruri_Ayanami from the old Tex Murphy ezboard).

They're not done yet, though. They still haven't implemented the final levels of the game, it's only finished up to the Lambda Core chapter. The Xen levels are still not available.
But, when they are, I'll be getting it.

Half Life Source is more of a port to source engine.
Think Chrono Trigger on the SNES and then the Playstation version of it.
Cool special effects added from the source engine, but that is it.... still all the same graphics.
Black Mesa Source is a complete remake.
And I read a review, and apparently the new content is supposed to be out sometime shortly after Christmas, but with their track records, that could mean next summer. Still not too bad of a wait.
Soundtrack is amazing.

Black Mesa, and a new Tex Murphy game, were the only two games I've been waiting for since many years.
Can't believe this, Black Mesa is out, and a new Tex Murphy game is on the way.
We are living in wonderful times
