I am sure most of you have heard about this....
There are no words to describe this.....

Laws need to be changed so that when someone is identified as mentally ill and potentially dangerous... something can be done about it prior to a crime. I don't think this shooter just went and did this out of nowhere..... There were probably tons of red flags, but nothing could be done about it before hand.

I feel for the families...... I couldn't even imagine this happening to my children.

Yeah, a gun control thread isn't a good idea here. Mark my words.

Let us all just agree that what this guy did was morally reprehensible and that his act of cowardice in taking his own life as well as the children that he did shows us the type of human being he was.
I'm not fat ... I'm festively plump.
I must say I enjoyed comedian Chris Rock's assertions that it's not gun control but bullet control that's needed. $5000 for 1 bullet.

There just aren't any words for this, and I'd be hard pressed to do or hear another bloody analysis of such events. Seems we go through the same bull all over again and then move on without any attempt to do anything useful or sensible.

For everything else we lose as individuals, the one thing we're supposed to gain from the long and painstaking process of civilisation is an understanding that violence is simply not an option to anything. We're already slowly but steadily losing our tolerance for wars, and the same needs to apply to domestic violence. I don't care how unstable or deranged anyone is, it has to be in the bloody subconscious communal psyche that it just isn't an option to any of your problems.

This is the worst news in a long time. The worst part is, that this time its children! Not college students, but elementary school children!. If this does not start gun control going in the US nothing ever will. I think all the world is horrified. I feel fortunate, that I live in a country, were I can come in every morning, and teach without ever having to worry, that such a thing can happen!

My thoughts goes to the families of the children killed, and all the people of Newtown, Conneticut.
I didn't hear about this one,

The ultimate tragedy in all of this is that virtually nothing will change when it comes to gun ownership legislation.
Perhaps something could be done about places and situations that draw these types of people. As my dad says, the one place people with guns aren't allowed is where they invariably show up.

I thought it was something that was done everywhere, but it must just be my local County or Maryland... Every School is required to have a Police Officer during regular school hours... This is something that should be Nationwide... Would definitely give the school a fighting chance against something like this... Would probably deter most of even attempting it as well...

There just aren't words to convey the magnitude of this tragedy...

As for Gun Control, I have to agree with Mr. Malloy, I don't think it is a wise topic to raise here... It ranks right up there with Politics and Religion... In a way I guess Gun Control is Politics...

Yes, it was proven that the gunman had mental issues... So the red flags, as people were talking about, were already seen and noticed... According to an interview with a neighbor that I saw, the mother was some sort of Doomsday Prepper... She expected the falling of America's Economy in the very near future and she was stockpiling things like weapons and supplies... This is why there were so many guns available...
So apparently the mental issues didn't rest with just the boy... Things like that are usually inherited...

I won't go into debate here, as I also agree it's a sensitive topic that may divide people and ruffle too many feathers, so I leave you with one statement that mirrors my sentiment and be done with it:

Gun's don't kill people, people with access to an ample array of weapons that expedite the process of taking another's life do. Perhaps if it were harder to gain access to a weapon that so conveniently serves it's soul purpose (taking another creature's life), then maybe there would be more emotional investment into the consequences of such terrible acts before they are committed, whether they be calculated or impulsive.

A terrible tragedy, it breaks my heart. I feel deeply for those touched by these events, and a nation torn by grief, anger and confusion. Let's hope something is done so that this thing never happens again.

Gun control, as others have said, is a topic that years ago was agreed as something better not discussed on UTM, because it deeply divides opinion, causes conflict and upsets people.

So keeping that issue off the table, I agree that what happened was terrible. Let's hope that it doesn't happen again.

Ummmm.... I hope most on this board realize that the numbers on that first post if fabricated. (A quick internet search will tell you that) This tradgedy in the school is terrible. However, we shouldn't overlook the sicko's that created the "letters" that the kids supposely wrote before they were shot,(I saw em on twitter) or make pictures with misleading and outright false statistics just to get a rise out of people. :x
Life is like grape jelly. It uhh...well it umm... Well trust me, it's just like grape jelly. Sometimes you just have to be a believer.
People want change, sadly they'll have to wait for it. That's always the worst part, not knowing when things will change or what could happen in the meantime. Still, here's hoping for good, beneficial change for everyone. Kanpai(cheers).

Not to undermine what happened, but I think this nation bent over backwards after 9/11 at the cost of people's liberties. I for one don't want that to happen again.
K, didn't realize this was agreed on years ago...
must have been before I signed on here.

I can see where this is going already....

I am deleting the original photo and part of the post.

I don't agree with some of the things said already, but I really don't want to press the issue anyway, alienate myself, or cause a rift in the community.

Hope the edit is feasible.

I guess what we can all agree on is ..... this was terrible.
