Well it's still Christmas in my time. I just made a utility, called Warped Streets, that eliminates the simulator function in Mean Streets as my Christmas gift to you. It's now at the download section.
I also found more possible information about the .ap files. I believe they're database files, which means more than one file rolled into one. I also believe a lot of the Tex games were encoded with Borland C++. If I got Borland I might be able to have a closer look at things but that would cost money.
