Top 5 video games

I'm going to go with: (mostly from arcades because you never forget the early years)

5. Space Invaders
4. Asteroids
3. Defender (?) not sure on the name, had a ball controller & had to protect bases from rays coming down - No wait! maybe it was Missile Command (so much for never forgetting...)
2. Frogger
1. favorite game on a home system: Zombies Ate My Neighbors (on SNES i think)
I'll give it a try.

1. Heavy Rain
2. Max Payne 1 and 2
3. Gabriel Knight series
4. Pandora Directive and Overseer
5. Resident Evil series

Currently playing The Walking Dead, which is a candidate for this list, but I have to finish before I know for sure.
5. Thief: The Dark Project
4. Deus Ex
3. Hotel Dusk: Room 215
2. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
1. Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven

Hard to really come up with top 5, but I decided to try.

I second that Mac!!!

That's good to hear about "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney". I received it as an Xmas gift and haven't had time to check it out yet, looking even more forward to playing it now.

Hard to draw the line between (arcade) video games, computer games (which would have the Tex series at the top) and home console games. Suppose technically they are all games played via video...
Non-Tex Lists:

Old School Console:

5: Out of This World(Sega Genesis)
4: Starfox (Super NES)
3: Super Metroid (Super NES)
2: Shadowrun (Sega Genesis)
1: Ecco the Dolphin/The Tides of Time (Sega Genesis)

New School Console:

5: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Gamecube)
4: Folklore (PS3)
3: Portal/Portal 2 (PS3)
2: Ghostbusters: The Video Game (PS3)
1: Batman: Arkham Asylum/Arkham City (PS3)

PC Titles:

5: BioForge
4: Leisure Suit Larry 7: Love for Sail
3: Darkstar
2: Bad Mojo
1: Tachyon: The Fringe

Too many games to choose from for PC.. it's too hard.. I keep going "I dunno which is better this or this... DONT MAKE ME CHOOSE!"

Console however, I'd argue the best games are the ones you got the most value out of.

1. Final Fantasy 7 (PS1)
2. Chrono Cross (PS1)
3. Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island (Snes)
4. Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time (N64)
5. Mario Kart (SNES) (I found it better than Mario Kart 64- a lot more value in this one).

These didn't make the list, as good as they are, I didn't get as much value as the ones above.
6. Sonic and Knuckles (MD/GEN)
7. Gran Turismo 2 (specifically 2 because it was waay bigger than GT1 and GT3). (PS1)
8. Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES)
Well if we go by value for consoles then Goldeneye is the undisputed champion for me, leaving absolutely everything else far, far behind. Not only have I extensively played the single player campaign for quite a few run, it's the multiplayer sessions on old school giant screens we've made the most use of, for years on end.

I can't remember which of the series, but one Ultima game on the original Sega Master System belongs to that console list, along with Super Mario World on the N64.

I have fond memories of the first Halo. While the single player was interesting, the real joy came from hooking the xbox to the computer and playing multiplayer games through hidden servers on Gamespy. The lag was horrible at times, and the game would often crash, but considering X Box live did not yet exist, we had quite a blast!

Oddly enough, I've never played online multiplayer games since, besides returning to Counter Strike every now and then. But I was always a CS lover, ever since a few of us over at Team Fortress moved over to play this game debut in the middle of the night. Along with Tribes, which was a lot of fun. In both instances, oddly, the very few existing servers were almost exclusively filled by young firemen and a few cops.

But I was never much of a console gamer. Well, not entirely true. We've owned almost every existing console in our household since the Intellivision, but we barely ever purchased games for them. Rental was just so very much cheaper, seeing as most games could be played in one week-end. It makes it surprisingly hard for me to attribute value to any specific console game.

I agree with that. When Goldeneye was relatively new my friends and I played countless multiplayer sessions.
My friends wanted to play so much, I got tired of the game....

I wasn't that good at it though and always died...
I don' think I ever won once in all the times I played.

I prefer single play first person shooters with a story.

I like strategy multiplayer better, even though I am not that great at it.

Picking a favorite game is like picking a favorite song for me. It's just impossible, there's too many that are good in different ways. My most played games are probably Space Harrier and Sonic 3, but there were a lot of games I probably sunk 100s of hours into as a kid.

On a more academic level, I think the most important/influential games (in no real order) might be:

1) Pong (for its commercial success, not its design)
2) Elite (godfather of all open-world 3D gaming, and of course the 3D space sim genre)
3) Colossal Cave Adventure
4) Super Mario Bros
5) Wolfenstein 3D/Doom (hard to separate their influence since they were so close together)
6) Space Invaders
7) Mario 64 (more for its camera and controls than anything else)
8) Ultima Underworld (both for its raycasting engine and its gameplay)
9) Dune II
10) DND/pedit5/Oubliette/Moria (by way of Rogue, Wizardry, Ultima, and all the other games that ripped them off)

Last one is kind of cheating to lump a bunch of games together, but those early PLATO games are so inseparable because of the small community centered around them. Combined they established every real RPG convention.

I remember playing this game for hours.
Here's my personal TOP 5

#1: The Pandora Directive. It just has everything I love in it. Great story, great characters (including best protagonist), free immersive exploration, best travel system ever, hints included in the game, anti-crash auto-save system, old detective atmosphere, plenty of great humor... all of this in glorious FMV!!!! Anyway... you know the game...

#2: The Elder Scrolls game. I'm not naming one in particular because it's the series itself, or should I say the "type of game" that I really love about it. Right now it's Skyrim, but that will probably change when the next one will come in (unless they mess it up.)

#3: Chrono Trigger. This is the game that brought the J-RPG wonders to my attention and did it brilliantly.

#4 Any X-Wing game. This is where I quench my thirst for some good old Star Wars greatness. Those games are simply amazing.

#5 Gabriel Knight 3 Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned. This must make the list because of the personal experience I had playing this game. In short: this game gave me the greatest emotional reactions I ever had.
Hey Val, long time no see! Good to see you're still around!
