Who are you, Tex? (Spoiler: ALL games)

You know, I don't have alot to add to this discussion as I am having trouble downloading the new game and can't play it yet. However, I'd like to write that after reading the scripted version of the Radio Theater, it would seem to me that Tex is a reincarnated PI Donnelly. Not a human popscicle. And when listening to one of the last radio shows (#5?), the OSS operative sound a whole lot like Chelsee. A past life for her as well? It seems a time continuum sort of scenario is being played out and all the people involved are drawn to another round of it, or maybe this time Tex/Donnelly can break it?

I've never been one to be upset at knowing the ending before playing the game or reading an anticipated book, so I really like reading the tidbits that people have come acrossed in the new game. I'd love to know if there is a chance that Tex and Chelsee have a happy ending.

KHAAAAAAAAAANors!!!
Gur, Gur bëhet mur.
Now, I'm not a dentist, but... there's something about how some people almost enjoy having their teeth pulled; the way they make getting straight answers from them seem like a job for a professional dental care worker. Case in point?

During my trip to Utah, I flat-out asked mr. Conners if James Tiberius was indeed Tex's real name. His response?

"I would like to think so."

(KHAAANERS!)

I, too, am looking forward to getting my paws on the book. The games are great, I love'em to death and all, but the books? The books are canon!

(At least in my head!)

I would argue the question and answer are irrelevant.

We call him Tex now. We called him Tex before. We will call him Tex in the future. It's the only name that matters.

That which we call Tex would by any other name still smell like sweat? And Llamas?

I'm curious about his past. He had/has a mother and father, brothers and sisters. Where'd he come from? It's a mystery!
grunthos64 wrote: But THATs the catch isn't it? Video game characters are DESIGNED to be blank slates to immerse the player. Link from Legend of Zelda isn't even his real name, its really a placeholder for a name you choose with his real name lost to time. Most RPGs and other games you create your own character, the player IS the character. I also feel that we aren't controlling Tex but we are actually playing as the spirit of Donnelly who despite this is how Tex gets his PI top notch chops, it drives him bad. The combination of wanting to do good along with the hard edgeness of Donnelly, not to mention Sylvia's damage on him, has given Tex his humor and personality.

Whooooooaaaa.... duuuuuude.... Now that is some Stanley Parable level stuff right there! Actually I'd love it if Tex realized he wasn't real and the game turned into that. The Murphy Parable: Tex realizes we the player are influencing him through our choices, and then we spend the whole game trying to outsmart one another, breaking the game and the story in the process.

grunthos64 wrote: Personally I believe he is a thawed out Donnelly, and he became Bad Tex when he fully remembered his past and accepted who he really was. The Tex we all know and love is a split personality that came out of losing his memory and gaining a new one in the future. Deep down Tex likes himself and others like him too, but his 'real' self is a real SOB who everyone including himself hates.
Interesting, but I'd still be bummed out to think that Tex is actually terrible. It would be dark and daring, but I don't know if I'd like it. Tex is relatable. Donnelly doesn't have my love. And if Dontex killed anyone, I can't forgive him. No.
I'd rather believe in reincarnation than frozen Tex.

I think him being reincarnated makes it supernatural and doesn't really fit in the series, but it is a hybrid. Personally I find it more fun to leave it open ended and make your own theory.

I'll just bet you are. lol

I like to think his name it Murphy Murphy. Once "Tex" stuck, he had no reason to be bullied at school anymore.

It just occurred to me: What about Sonny? He's as much "out of time" as Tex is. He has an ancient TV and radio, likes western stuff, acts like a classic detective, drinks booze, is alone. Isn't it unlikely that he too is reincarnated or thawed out? Possible, but no likely.

Sonny also has pictures of a young guy who clearly is Tex. But let's not pull the threads on that or the sweater will fall apart...
I just finished the game (finally) and have only played the Chelsee path so my input may be limited by not having seen all of the flashbacks. However, I think there's the idea of possibly a reincarnated Tex. The theme of this game seems to be redemption or atonement with Margaret Leonard claiming that her erasing Tex's memory was part of her atonement for things she had done and Tex having to atone for his past seven years. So, if Donnelly was a hired gun for Tesla and, generally, a bad guy, maybe he has to come back as a down-on-his-luck PI and try to atone for his past life's misdeeds. Granted, I'm sure AC has something much more complicated worked out, but it would sort of fit with the general vibe of the game.
I'm still going through UAKM as my kids want to play it too (I get to proof it first, guide them around things a 6 & 7 year old shouldn't be seeing). I've played them all, with the exception of Tesla Effect, and Sonny isn't ringing my bell. Which one was he in again?

As for out of time, my son wants to be a cowboy, and watches old, OLD, lone ranger B&W shows, roy rodgers, and such. Last year, he was taken to a local 4-H fair where he saw kids dressed in "gear". He himself dresses in his cowboy clothes because that's his favorite thing to do. There was a cowboy best dressed contest and he got third place (the 1st & 2nd place were kids competing in actual activities!). That's how much he loves it. We live party central in a mid-sized city and he is so far removed from the kids he goes to school with.

I guess my point is that it is easy to be out of time and place when you identify with it so well.

What about Tex's Celestial Connection. He dies and The Big PI in the Sky sends him back. Obviously, Tex is more than just some everyday gumshoe. What, I'm not sure, but apparently he's on the side fighting the forces of evil, whatever/whoever they may be.

I'm not at all sure how this Cosmic Connection (pun intended) plays into Tex being Donnelly.
