NEW TEX GAME - What Can Each of us Do?

OK, so enough is enough. We had five fantastic Tex Murphy games to play with for nigh on 17 years. 'What are we complaining about' I hear you all ask (Yes I can hear you ... wooooo!)?

Well as we all know, "Tex Murphy: Overseer" ended with an exciting cliffhanger and a 'To Be Continued...' line. Unfortunately from here on in, things definitely got "Worser". Overseer was released in 1998, and as such we've endured one of the longest cliffhangers man has ever witnessed (We'd probably get more public interest applying for the Guinness Book of Records!). So as aforementioned - ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

In the immortal words of The Doors: "The time to hesitate is through."

Everyone on this forum is loyal to the Tex Murphy line and I am certain would love to see a complete conclusion (beyond The Radio Theater) to Overseer. And everyone on this forum - programmers, sequencers, artists, Degree Level producer/directors and loyal fans - has something to submit towards a project of that sort (Whether it be Interactive Movie or otherwise).

Please use this post to explain what you feel you can do for this worthy cause - a New Tex game at long last - and whether or not you feel you could be fully committed. If response is, as I predict, plethoric: I urge TOG or James LeMosy to forward this information to the people that matter (Namely Aaron Connors and Chris Jones - possibly others too.

I hope we can make a difference this time.

Dave.

Well I guess I should start the ball rolling. As I have said before on the forum, I am a MIDI sequencer, Sound Recordist and Mixer. I can assist with soundtrack and incidental music

Although in general, I share Cub's jaded view of the chances that we'd get another project together, I am curious to see what sort of resources are present among the residents of this cyber Chandler Avenue.

As for me, my writing skills I would rather leave out of the equation, because Tex cannot be Tex without AC writing the script. I would be a great tester, though!
While I cannot compare to AC as a writer, I have had experience in the past writing fiction, and while I may not be a published writer yet, it is a hobby of mine, and I would like to think I'm at least above average on creating a compelling story. With some work, I could probably help come up with a good plot.

Hey All. As I've mentioned a couple times before, I've been doing 3D animation for a while now, both for games and short films. I just recently made a replica of Chandler Avenue for a game I was working on; of course, no one else on the team even knows who Tex is...but I think I'd be up for creating the kind of virtual environments we've seen in UAKM and PD. I also know a bit about editing and post production, so a lot of things (if we wanted to do an interactive movie) could be filmed in front of a green screen and composited, and look really good. I know all of the technical aspects of camera matching, etc... also if a director / cinematographer is needed, I've played my part in that role... I'll see if I can put up a link to some of my work.

As for my commitment, I am extrememly commited. Of course there's always the issue of proximity. However, proximity is only necessary for the people who need to work together interactively (camera-men, directors, actors, etc...). Otherwise, the writer doesn't need to be near the storyboard artist or the 3d animator. That's what the internet / postal system is for; material can simply be sent from one person to another. Also, being a student of Telecom I have a bunch of equiptment at my fingertips, no charge. We have an TV studio which is at the moment being converted to use HD technology - with all the works (sound, lights, etc). I also have the ability to check out camera's, microphones, lights, etc for field production. In addition, my university has an acting school with hundreds of aspiring you actors/actresses willing to work for free just to get their name in something (-same with musicians at the music school). I'm sure I could find someone willing to code a game and even create a new game engine. I read somewhere here in the past that it would take a 'fluke' to bring adventure games back into the market. I suggest that we not only do this for ourselves, but also the rest of the world. if we created a brand new, spectacular TM game for the whole world to see - who knows, maybe we could somehow spark interest in the genre once again. I was just reading about our new rather young tex-fan - I strongly believe that today's youth is getting sick of mindless sports games.

So basically, all we need is the go ahead, and possibly the help of the original Access boys to get this thing started. It's all at our fingertips. If anyone has a way to contact Chris Jones or Aaron Conners, please do so and let them know that there are many people willing to help pro bono (until profits are made )... After that stuff with Indie Built being shut down, maybe Aaron will get the time to finish up the next trilogy... Hopefully he still owns the rights.

I hope this all turns out! Good Luck to all of us!

P.S. Dalton, what do you think of this idea? Have you heard anything from Aaron or Chris lately? (Thanks for keeping in touch with this forum, it means a lot!)

I write dark-ambient-industrial music for KYF records and have scored several horror movies here in boston, I'm also a flash program developer (some of you may recall the tex inspired Interactive movie I programmed a year ago or so) and Graphic designer. I can definatly write Dark ambient scary as sh*t background music and do film scoring.

Ask and ye shall receive :)
I'm here and willing to do what iot takes to help out

We tried this a few years ago, and the first thing we need is a good script. That can take a year to produce. I would love to get involved but without a script it won't get much farther.
I'm going to be straight up front and tell you - I'm not a die-hard fanboy. Of all the Tex Murphy games, I only played UAKM, so I don't even know the cliffhanger. However, UAKM was one of the 4 or 5 games I ever really played, so that should say something about what I think of it. I loved the story, character, style and ideas, but I just was never much of a gamer.

But - I don't watch TV, and I'm selective with my movie watching. I just prefer to be on the creation end of entertainment and don't have much time for the receiving end. I don't enjoy it as much, anyway.

That said, I love to write, and I would love to work on a script. The game script can be broken down into two pieces: the basic story, and then the interactivity. Games have progressed that we don't need - and shouldn't have - a single solid storyline, with gameplay just linking the cut-scenes together so we know what's going on. We should do more, and I'd like to be on both sides of the writing.

Besides writing, I do graphic/interface design, character design, character modelling and animation (I can do environments, but not my favorite thing to do), storyboards, illustration, and basically anything like that. Not a coder.

Comittment - If it's a hobby type of thing, I can't promise comittment. When I have free time I'd work on it a little here and there, but I'd need to see $ before I can really commit. Just too busy, otherwise.

But Demon's right - we need a script first to get anywhere.
Last time I checked, there was a script. Three, in fact. And to be perfectly honest, that is the story I want to experience, and have heard. Before committing to anything, I'd want to know of the scheming from the Guys With The Plans, AC & CJ.

If they have anything cookin' in the oven, I don't want to ruin the flavor, if you get my point :)

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
the story should naturally be chance, trance, or polarity, but last I heard they were only notes and doodles in a cardboard box. if anyone knows otherwise or has contact with cj or ac, please try to find out...

Tevih, you're not alive yet. You have not lived until you have played Pandora Directive! UAKM and Overseer are nowhere near as good as PD. I refuse to talk to you until you play it, and encourage others to do the same.

Ok, maybe not. But I do encourage you to play it!
I agree, tha Pandora Directive was the best of the series by a long shot. Not to say the others were but... Pandora is just so darn good!

I'm a mediocre C/C++ programmer. Dabbled in a little bit of graphics programming, but nothing too advanced. But I guess that's better than nothing, right?
With my vast knowledge and experience, I, too, would like to contribute. Uh, I'm especially good at playing the games. Oh, I forgot, we don't have a game to play. Well, in that case, let me know when one is available.

That was pretty bad, wasn't it?

Yeah... your attempts at post count development are getting lamer

j/k Jim, i still had a giggle. :)
