Hey guys, I have a question. My daughter uses AOL and AIM and she's been getting names on her buddy list she didn't put there. The obvious answer is that someone compromised her account and put their name there. But is there any other glitch or quirk that possibly could have caused names to appear there? Just wondering, from a concerned mom and totally stupid person when it comes to computers,

I'm no aim or aol expert, but I have used aim a little because of friends who have it - I believe that if someone else adds your daughter's name to their list, their names are automatically added to your daughter's list. It didn't use to be like this, so I think it's a pretty recent feature.
Hope this helps

Does she already have her AOL name hidden from the public directory? I think you get a choice when signing up as to whether you want your username on a public list which people can use to message/add you. But its been years since I tried to use AOL and I disliked it compared to other messengers so I never really used it.

It's always important to stay safe when talking on Instant Messenger serivces.
If you are concerned about privacy there are a few steps you can take to ensure you are safe:
Make sure your account is private (e.g. only people you approve are who are on your list of contact are able to see your online status, making you invisible to the general public)
If someone pops on you list or contacts you who is not on your list, find out who they are, and be stern ("who are you", "what's your name") remembering that, becuase you are privatly listed, someone off a friend's list might have referred this person to you... but if it is too difficult to identify this person just block them.
If someone pops up who claims to be a friend of a friend (hence, how they got your details) subtly ask them questions to find out of they are genine, e.g....
you: "So how do you know Susan?"
stranger: "she's a friend of mine"
you: "Ah so you knew her when she was at UCLA?"
stranger: "Yes"
*bingo, she never went to UCLA... block them*
Never flirt with or allow a stranger to flirt with you... they might just be testing the waters and if you flirt back you are indicating to them that you are accepting their harrassment.
Always remember, Instant messengers are like telephones... if a stranger rang you up who you did not know you would not want to talk to them, remember that. Also, general rule of tumb, if you feel uncomfortable, cut the ties... there is no pressure when you don't have to ace the person so don't be afraid to tell people to go away.
Hope this helps!

Also, I'd like to add, it's also quite possible that if she had ever spoke to any of these people in an IM before, they automatically get put on your buddylist.
I have names on my BL on AOL that I don't recognize, simply because I talked to them one time on an IM, and never talked to them again. They get added to your BL automatically. It's quite possible you forgot you ever even talked to them.
Just a thought.
