Peaches Geldof - 25 years old! Her mother died 14 years ago and her boyfriend Michael Hutchence died 17 years ago. So sad. Bob Geldof must be beside himself with grief.

I know she is not particularly well known outside the UK but I'd like to mention Elena Baltacha, a former UK number 1 tennis player, who died at the age of 30 yesterday morning of the effects of liver cancer.

It's astounding, really, that he lived that long, considering the crazy life he led. May he RIP.

It was just announced that British comedian Rik Mayall has died today at the age of 56. It's really unexpected and a sad shock.... He was one of the best British comedians, he really made me laugh...Very talented with his voice and facial expressions. Really unique guy.... *sigh* He will be greatly missed :(

In true comic style Ade Edmondson, a close and longtime colleague of his, said of the news:
"There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing.
They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish b*****d." No doubt Rik's chuckling from up above.

My favourites of his work:

The Young Ones - As student Rik, a chaotic creative comedy show the likes of which can never be recreated without the writers and cast that made it amazing.

Kevin Turvey Investigates - A early solo work as a guy somehow paid to 'investigate' things to talk about on BBC TV, but goes on hilarious descriptions of his misadventures whilst trying to investigate without actually saying much about the topic he was hired to cover.

Image

Grim Tales - Again demonstrating his fantastic comedy storytelling abilities. With funny voices and faces he narrates classic Brothers Grimm stories interspersed with very unusual stop-motion animation.

Other funny stuff he did: Blackadder as Lord Flashheart, Drop Dead Fred (film), Various roles in The Comic Strip Presents (such as a Enid Blyton parody), Bottom with Ade Edmondson, Filthy Rich & Catflap.

Rik Mayall, alas. All his friends have always spoke well of him and he really seemed like a nice guy.

Some celebs pass away and I think, "Oh, sorry to hear that," but Rik? That makes me truly sad. He was too young.

Bastard! Just to make things worse, he'll be outlived by Cliff Richard!

Dad's a huge fan of The Young Ones while I was into Black Adder so it'll definitely gets mention at the dinner table tonight. I must say I preferred his latter sitcom, Bottom ahead of The Young Ones.

But, for me personally, this performance of his will always be my favourite:

I am destroyed - Rik Mayall was one of the best and brightest and I've been a fan since the early 80s.
