Overviewer

Just a quick note on viewing video files from the overseer DVD version.

All you need to do is open the VOB files in the 'C' folders via media player and you can view them... and if you want to work with them in an editing program it is as simple as copying them onto your HD and renaming the file type to MPG.

...And Voila!

Hey, Cub, I don't know where in the "C" folders you're finding those VOB files, but all I can find in those folders that I can play is C15/542.wav ("S.F."). Everything else that stands out is a 007 file in most of the folders.

Outside the "C" folders, in the "DATA" folder, I did see two VOB's, "ACCELOGO" and "TUTORIAL". I tried to get them to play in Media Player, but no dice. I then tried renaming them to ".mpg", & couldn't get them to change from being VOB's.

Any ideas?

Okay, sorry hammerhead, it appears as though I have given you the wrong info (has been a while since I did this, but I dragged out the DVD today and here is what you do:

> Open the Overseer DVD in explorer
> Go to the DATA folder
> Every folder starting with C (C01 through to C60) contains video files
> Example: The C56 folder contains a file called C56.000 (which is the video file where Tex first meets ylvia) (and some folderders contain may videos, and they are names in sequence by extension (C25.000, C25.001, C25.002, etc.)
> Basically there are all VOB files names in a particular order specifically for the game
> In order to watch then, you will have to rename the 000 to MPG in each of the files, but you CANNO do this directly off the DVD (as DVDs are read only)
> The best way to do it is to copy the contents of the C folders onto your Hard Drive, and then you can rename them and watch them.

Here is a guide which shows you where each video file is located for your reference: http://www.provisionaustralia.com.au/moviescenelist.doc

Enjoy!

Hey, Cub, I'm virtually computer illiterate when it comes to editing files. I've flunked pretty much everything on computers in college, though somehow gained an understanding of binary and hexadecimal, which near as I can tell doesn't help me much here. So I hope this helps you understand my next question:

How did you rename your files?

When you say rename, do you mean change the file type? 'Cause I've been changing the file name by adding ".mpg", tried both caps & lower case, but still can't get anything to play (it just makes the title, for example, C01.mpg.000).

I also haven't found a way to change the file type from ".000" to ".mpg". The only way I know of to change the name of a file is to open it & then resave it as a different file type. Obviously, if I can't get it to play, I can't change it to ".mpg" in this manner. Any ideas?

Please help me to understand how to do this stuff better. I'd really like to be able to watch these movies.

Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
A loyal Tex Murphy fan,
Hammerhead

Assuming you're in Windows XP, go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the "View" tab of the box that comes up. In the list, uncheck the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types". Then you'll be able to see the .000 extension and edit it by renaming the file.
