As it turns out, Bill Pullman already played a character similar to Tex; a detective, hopeless in casual life, but a detective genius. The movie was "The Zero Effect", also starred Ben Stiller (Non-comedic role), and was really cool.
Yes. I saw The Zero Effect. I even have it on DVD. Although I enjoyed the film and I like Bill Pullman, I thought his characterization of a detective was unconvincing and the weakest link in the film.

I still think my boy Bruce would be fabulous and I don't think his age would be an issue. He just did another cop movie this year - Hostage. He didn't seem old to me at all. Then again, I'm older than him.

But, you know. Everybody has their own tastes.

I'm having trouble thinking of a younger guy that could pull it off. Maybe Vince D'onofrio. Nah. Too blond. Rufus Sewell? To sinister. Hey, how about Jim Carrey. Now THAT would be cool. He's played it straight a few times, like The Majestic. No, we don't want the pet detective.

Hey - I just saw somebody who I think would make a great Tex.

I was watching the SciFi Channel and there was a commercial for some upcoming show called Tornado/TidalWave. The main guy in the show is the actor Bruce Campbell. You might know him from The Evil Dead, Army of Darkness or Buba HoTep. I think he had a TV series some years ago. Something like Brisco County <something>. More recently, he was in some other SciFi production. I can't remember the title. It involved some giant ant-like alien creatures invading Earth. Terrible movie, but I watched it 'cause of Bruce.

Anyway, he has the right look and quirkiness that would suit the TM character.

Any of you guys familiar with Bruce Campbell? He's a little crazy, but...

Yes I am VERY familiar with Bruce Campbell... my brother even has his book "If chins could kill... confessions or a B-grade actor". I think he would make a great Tex Murphy... he has the right amount of cynicism.

Brue Campbell might be interesting choice as TM but I think CJ can considered being TM in a movie. I think CJ would accept just for this TM movie. It's was a good movie that is almost simliar to TM style with Bill Pullman but it completely different story but close but different story wise in different time era then TM time era in futurist 2043 era.

I heard rumor that Brue Campbell will be in the sequel of Jason versus Freddy but will be called Ash (Army of Darkness) vs Jason vs Freddy sequel title name but just heard rumor of it title name. that would be interesting sequel though, Cubase.

I think that idea went down the drain some time ago Ryan... it might get resurrected, but it does not look good. Although, there is always a demand for cult horror flicks, and it would hit a maket weet spot appealing to Freddy, Jason and Ash (Evil Dead) fans, The Evil Dead being somewhat regarded as a pinnacle definition of the horror genre.

Although in the meantime you can see Campbell in the new movie Sky High, he plays the coach. Small roll, yes, but it was better than his two extremely short cameos in both the Spiderman films (you will always see Bruce in a Sam Raimi film... along with Ted Raimi).

I do agree through... CJ would be good enough (albeit, he might need to polish up on his acting to avoid looking rusty) to play Tex Murphy should it ever come to Hollywood (or independant release) before Jones goes grey. Even then, I am sure Aaron would find a way to write and older Murphy into the script... perhaps a story that takes place in the future? Who knows.

Hey Cubase, that was a bit weird ;)

I always thought CJ was perfect for playing TM and any other person would be just a mediocre substitution :)

What do you think CJ could have done better by playing TM ?

Of course, we'd all rather see CJ play Tex over anyone else. I just thought that the point of this discussion was who else, if not the originals?

I was also thinking Kim Bassenger for Chelsea. Or maybe Diane Lane (Diane, recently was in Under a Tuscan Sun and Must Love Dogs.)

This topic comes up every year or so, and it's fun to think about who might be cast. Of course, like all of you I'd first pick the Chandler Street regulars, but if Hollywood insisted on "name" actors, here's my $.02.

Paul, you took the words right out of my mouth for Chelsea. Definitely Diane Lane. Fantastic choice. That woman keeps getting better looking with age. And she still looks damned young. Smart, sexy, Bingo!!

And I'm thinking, why not Morgan Freeman in some support roll? It's hard to see him in a paper hat dishing out lamb chili, but maybe as the Col?

Danny Devito as Nilo.
Christopher Lloyd as Clint
Dennis Franz as Mac Malden
And here's a wild one, but Michael J Anderson as Rook. He can play wicked sarcastic, and his short stature coupled with withering statements against a tall and gangly Tex, HILARIOUS! For those of you who arent too familar with the name. Season 2 X files episode Humbug. The manager of the trailer park.

Great topic. Hope to read more.

PS BTW Cub, your signature ROCKS!!!!!!

Thanks Jen! :D You are probably going to gasp but I take to watching the entire Extended Edition trilogy back to back about once every two weeks! I know it's crazy, but AC has admitted to reading the book around once a year so I guess we all have out closet insanities.

BTW, I think DeVito would make a GREAT Nilo! For some reason I see Steve Buscemi as Clint.

Bruce Willis as Tex is a great choice and quite possibly the ONLY choice. $.02

Diane Lane is another great choice - for Chelsee, that is (not Tex). However, Kim Bassinger is a VERY close second. $.02

Morgan Freeman or Samuel L. Jackson as Louie would be tremendous! $.02

Steve Buscemi, Danny DeVito and William Macy as Clint, Rook and Nilo would make for a VERY well-rounded and effective cast. However, if Rod Steiger is healthy enough he would make a great Rook. Loud, obnoxious and sarcastic would best describe the great Rod Steiger in his role as the loud, obnoxious and sarcastic Rook Garner. $.02

Mac Malden could be played superbly by Dennis Farina. He's got the face, stature and voice as well as the character personality to accomplish the role perfectly. $.02

Now, one subject we have NOT embraced is this: Who should be cast as the ultimate villain? Here are some choices: Jack Nicholson, Michael Caine, Robert De Niro or Al Pacino for older bad guys. Younger ones could be played by most anybody. I leave it to you to come up with some good options for that role.

Bah. You guys are thinking that the only good movies out there are big-name Hollywood movies. What about an independent film? Tex Murphy would be great as an independent film, and that doesn't mean that special effects and other things would have to be sacrificed. Not all independent movies are low-budget. :)

I like this question of villains. Michael York could play Gideon again. He's a name actor, although of late he hasn't done a lot of film. Christopher Plummer would be great as Gideon or maybe a re-envisioning of Lowell Percival.

I think doing an indie Tex movie would be cool, and depending on which story was done, there wouldn't be a huge need for special effects. Pandora didn't have that much crazy stuff in it, if you think about it.

And the thing about Diane Lane - She seems so sweet and nice too. Just like our Chelsea.

And DeVito and Buscemi? Perfect. Why didn't I think of those guys?

For the part of Mac Malden I would suggest Tom Wilkinson, recently in Batman Begins.

For Louie, I would disagree with both Freeman and Jackson. How about...Ron Livingston? He has the voice for Louie, while Freeman and Jackson have more of an edge, more atune to tougher characters.

And so I was browsing the internet when I discovered my choice of Ron as Louie was completely wrong! I should have picked Ed O'Neal!
