Just saw this film (its been out since 1st Feb in the UK but been too busy, plus I do like to leave it until late since not so many people in the audience = less chance of disruptors/better seat etc.)
Enjoyed it alot. Although could of been a little longer, felt kinda short but I guess that was just due to the style of the film.
I'm embarassed to say but... Blair Witch Project genuinely gave me a sleepless night.... I have a very vivid imagination (very useful in my career not so for other things) so the not knowing what 'it' was and never finding out gave my mind free reign to mess me around ¬.¬;;
However I knew Cloverfield was a monster movie so I knew it wouldnt bother me. Which it didnt and actually made me smirk in anticipation of something coming out at them
I really liked how human they made the characters. Although I think some parts were a little rushed, mainly after someone dieing, felt there should of been more time spent on their reactions in some instances, made the 'guy going for to Japan' person seem a little cold in some respects. But I guess in some ways it may be what happens when you have that much adrenaline going through you from fear, you don't have time to stop and mourn.
The guy holding the camera was cool. The way he dealt with things by talking reminded me of someone. He was pretty entertaining. I guess Im a softy for happy endings so I was sad to see him get mauled to death and for his love interest to die like that. I would of liekd everyone to live including the brother but I guess it makes more sense and makes for a better/more interesting film for them to die.
Overall I felt the direction of the movie and the way things played out was great. The bit where they watch the birth of the mini monsters on the store TV screen as they leap on a passerby was great when you know that it is happening just round the corner from them and those mini things are soon gonna be jumping on them! When theyre in the tunnel and there are the rats and when they figure out the night vision and the mini monsters are right infront of them, that was cool. And the way that attack scene in the tunnel was done was pretty good. I'm glad there werent too many moments where the camera was left just pointing at nothing for realism's sake, there was that bit in the shop and 1 or 2 other bits but for the most part you got to see a fair amount of action.
I was a little confused about happened to that girl that the camera holding guy liked. During their rest in the tunnel maintenance room when the Hud camera holding guy said to her (in his sorta nonchalant/joky way) "You got bit" I thought about when werewolves or vampires bite others and they turn into one. So when she started going downhill and they started dragging her off etc I thought maybe she was turning into something else and needed to be taken away from others. Then it kinda looked like her body was ripped open or exploded or something. I thought maybe something jumped out of her and then the military dealt with it. Although reading online seems most people think she simply exploded.
If there are different perspectives/camera views in the future I think it'd have to be done pretty differently for me to see it in the cinema having seen the whole 'incident' already but would definitely watch other perspectives on DVD or TV.
