My opinion would be that it all goes along with the story... Some stories call for straight adventure with minor puzzles needing to be solved and they make for great games, while others need deeper puzzles and of course like Myst the entire game is mostly puzzle...
It also depends on the gamer and what really gets them going...

Which is why the people who think they know better feel there is no need for another Tex Murphy, because the gamers who like that sort of game are just to few to far...

I also very rarely use a walkthrouhgh or helpguide, it takes away the genuine experience of solving a puzzle and being rewarded by your skills as a player. In fact, the only games i've ever used one is Myst/Riven, Tex Murphy (playing in entertainment mode) and the trillogy of Discworld adventure games.

What if they made a mystery/adventure/puzzle game out of the Saw storyline? You wake up in a makeshift cell of sometime...you receive a message from Jigsaw on what you are to do next and that's the game...a series of events and puzzles that help you along your way to freeing yourself from your torturous hell. I'd play it.

You're right that the Saw storyline would be well suited (although graphic and gory) to the adventure game model.

Along the same line, but not so gross, was a story by Philip K Dick which was later made into the movie called Paycheck.

In this story, you wake up with your memory erased, and people trying to kill you. But the back-story is that, before your memory was erased, you had a glimpse of the future and sent yourself a small satchel containing a variety of innocuous items.

Eventually, you realize that each of these items are exactly what you need to get out of one of the many tight spots that you find yourself in. The concept reminded me so much of the "Inventory" in most adventure games. And the storyline proceeded much like it would in an adventure game.

Saw could very easily be a good mystery puzzle game... Only problem is that I don't see the game being too long... There would have to be several different episodes in the game that you can play...

And I don't mean a New Expansion Pack every month like The SIMS 2...

Saw doesn't have to be all Blood and Gore... If you pass the puzzle you don't get hurt so therefore you see no blood or gore...

Then after they establish the games popularity they come out with an Online version... Where you can play with a group of people, kind of like Saw II had, the group of people in the house...

I can see that....however, the only problem with blood and gore that I can see goes back to the line from Saw 2..."Oh yes, there will be blood..." It's inevitable there be blood because that's how Jigsaws participants ultimately became "free"...they had to pay their own price in blood..the question was, were they willing to pay that price? As far as the length of the game maybe not being long enough..you could fix that with the back storyline. You notice in saw 1, as the two men are trying to figure out how to get out of the room they are in, they go back and slowly start giving you the back story....using an Overseer formula, you play the backstory using puzzles and what have you, but you also play the foreground of the story as well trying to unlock the secrets to free you from your current hell-like prison. Just a thought...

You can solve the blood factor with Filters... Those who don't wish to see it, click on Yes Activate Filter, those that don't care click on Do Not Activate Filter...

We're sitting here discussing it, there are probably programmers out there working on it right now...

A game revolving around Saw would probably take awhile to finish anyway... Could be years before we would hear about it...
