Pandora with Dosbox

Tech was here and brought me up to speed on the drive situation and installed Nero as a burning program since I needed a new one. He also installed a school program called Rosetta Stone that we use at the college where I teach and which I need at home to develop lesson plans.

Previously I was able to get Pandora up and running, had played through the introduction making one save before I had to go to work. Came home, tech was here, and now when I try to play Pandora I can get as far as the Access logo and it sticks there. The error message I get claims there is another program interfering! What now! Can't imagine a burning program interfering but not sure about the rosetta stone. Any ideas?

If this is a possibility re interference, is it possible to move the programs out of the system into a folder on the desktop and then try the game? And if possible will elements be left in the registry that would interfere?
You check your task bar, down by your clock to see what all is running in the background... Right Clicking on them usually gives you a little menu of options, most of the time you can choose to close/exit those programs... If this Stone program is running like that, closing it shouldn't hurt anything...
Along with Virus Programs, while you are playing games, Virus programs should be disabled during gameplay... It can be turned back on by rebooting the machine or just going back into the menu and turning it back on...

As for your problems, sounds like the Tech would be the one to ask, since it worked before he fiddled with it...

Never will understand the ways of PCs. I decided to try a different file to use to log into the game and lo and behold it worked! Was using the picture icon of tex and tried the dos icon labeled Tex4.

So off and running? NO! I get as far as Tex having conversation with Chelsee and making a dinner date when I get thrown to the desktop as Dos error with window entitled Inactive VDMS Launchpad. Not sure what that means.

If I must go back to the other icon and get the program interference again, will have to consult the tech.

I forgot to turn off my AV so that maybe the problem - will do so and see. Will I ever get this tex game to go?! :?

BTH found nothing running in background except AV which will turn off and try again.
You shouldn't be using Icons of any kind if you are doing things right... You need to double click the Icon for Dosbox and then type in the Directories and file names as if you were back 15 years ago in DOS... Should be something like this:

C:\>

Then you would type:

C:\>cd pandora {enter} {insert whatever your directory names are, if you've done everything as Nilo outlines in his Instructions, this should be how it's done}

C:\PANDORA>pandora

Game Should Begin To Run...

There should be no use of Icons if you've installed everything correctly, just the Icon for Dosbox to make it appear like you are using DOS...

It has! It has! What would I do without this site and people like you:) Not sure how much to expect re sound and video exactness - the sound at times is scratchy and screechy; while video often sticks the picks back up again. Have done the configuration adjustments but the situation persists. So struggling on! Thanks for pulling my coat tail to the DosBox Icon which threw me into Dos like screen and could then follow through.
Are you using the Dosbox files that you downloaded from Nilo's site??? He has Video and Sound fixes programed in those files...

You did get the VDMSound Files for the VDM Launcher that is needed for Dosbox as well right???

Just making sure...

I downloaded the five files Nilo recommended - are there more re sound?

I guess some program might still be interfering even thugh not getting any error messages. Now despite configuring the sound is getting worse, movement is bad, (characters move, then stop, move then stop) and then game freezes and I have one heck of a time getting back to desktop. Sometimes have to hot boot PC off. So again back to drawing board.

This could be a Resource problem with programs running in the background. Many programs will not be listed in the Taskbar.

Did your Tech remove the potentially bad drive or are you using it to play the game?

What is the condition of the CDs...noticeable scratches?

The five files would have included the VDMSound and VDMS LaunchPad.
A sansGUI interface is one that does not have the small features called "Windows". The term comes from the French word sans, meaning "without".

SansGUI's are more typically used in Unix-like Operating Systems. The conventional wisdom is that a GUI (Grapical User Interface) help guide the casual computer user to perform routine tasks with Point and Click simplicity. SansGUI's have acquired considerable acceptance for users accustomed to the CLI (Command Line Interface).
Okay, here's my final suggestion...

Delete everything regarding Pandora and UAKM... Then remove VDMSound and VDMLauncher... Now Remove DosBox...

Time to reinstall everything... Lets do it in order...

Install Dosbox, make sure it is 0.72... If you have an earlier Version find the latest one which is the 0.72...
Now lets reinstall the VDMLaunch Pad... Once that is installed, Reinstall VDMSound, the latest Version of the Sound should be 2.0... I'm not sure on the VDMLaunch Pad, pretty sure there is only the one Version of that out...

You did say you were using XP, right??? You Downloaded the Pandora For XP from Nilo and the UAKM For XP from Nilo???

Okay, then now to get to the games... Open that file from Nilo for Pandora For XP... Actually Unzip it... Inside is a Folder Labeled PANDORA... Over to the left are options... One of those options should be Extract All Files, Click that... Wizard for Winzip should come up... Click next... Now it wants to know where to Extract the Files to... Click Browse... This should open a window with a few options such as Desktop, Documents, My Computer, etc... Click the Plus Sign next to My Computer... This will display all your drives... Click on your C: Drive... Now Click the OK button... That should Extract the Folder to your C: Drive...

Okay, close out all windows, lets start with a clean desktop again... Right Click on the Start Button again... Select Explore again... Now through all the folders that just popped up under your C: Drive, look for the PANDORA Folder... Click on it, so that all of it's contents are showing... Find the file that says Config... Double click on that, this should open a Notepad with all the program code displayed... All the way at the bottom is the CD_Mapped information... Make sure that all the Drives say E:... If any of them say D: or anything else change it to E:... Close that, make sure to click YES when it asked if you want to Save the Changes...

Okay... Now we should be ready to open your Dosbox, change your Directory to the PANDORA folder and type Pandora to run the game...

If this doesn't work for you then I am really at a loss... My next suggestion at this point would be for you to purchase a Gaming computer off of eBay or something that is built with the old hardware and software used back in the 90s...

OK will follow through but for now am sooooo sick I cannot sit at PC for long and cannot even stand much. One minute last evening after work, I was fine and within 5 minutes I was down with room spinning around, aching like no tomorrow. So bad I even made arrangements with our security here to see if I was alive the next day and if not :) to take my birds to the 'bird man'.

Still here but so bad will not be back until I get on my feet. Hopefully will not have to go to urgent care. See ya when I am somewhat rational again:(

And stay away from this year's flu!
Take your time and get better, the computer isn't going anywhere... The instructions above will still be there as well... :)

Still not on my feet - have been gone some time but have had a medical emergency here - a possible TIA but not sure yet until scans are done. TIA=mini stroke. So am pretty panicked behind all of this until I learn more. Not up to involved game problems just now but am keeping your ideas on file re uninstalling Pandora and beginning again. Hope to be back in near future.
Getting well is foremost important... The games and the steps I've given {which are pretty much Nilo's steps} aren't going anywhere...

So relax and get well...
