*walks by the burning pile and decides to toss in his own two cents*

After reading through all these posts, it occurred to me that I knew of Bill Hicks and never heard of Redd Fox. The reason why I heard of Bill Hicks? A friend of mine is talking to me one day and he says that my sense of humor sounds similar to Bill Hicks. Which might be true. I tend to be blunt and a bit on the vulgar side, though not as much as Bill.

After Fred commented that Bill Hicks was in Redd's spot, an easy way to end that train of thought would be to say, "None of the comedians are listed from best to worst, just in the order I thought of them in." Rather then going on the defensive. Which, Bafitis, is something you do a lot. Someone critiques you or something you're interested in, and you scramble your lines onto the defensive, feeling as though you are obligated defend yourself/your ideal/object you find sacred.

Also, popular comedians don't have to be the favorite comedian. Robert Williams is hilarious but have you seen some of his newer movies? R/V? He's done better. Martin Lawrence has made better movies and Larry the Cable Guy (not listed but mentioned in later posts) has not made a single good movie. In my opinion. And a couple other people.

And as for people belonging here, well, over the past few years this unofficial Tex Murphy forum has gone along almost considering Tex Murphy as a subplot; it's hard to derive new subject material on a series of games that's, sadly, not in production anymore. It's at a community level. Most of the people here have been around with the forum for a few years, absences here and there but they generally come back.

And finally!

Considering what you were trying to do with your poll, you made a pretty decent list of comedians. The problem with making a poll like this, though, is that there are lots of comedians that won't get listed. Here is a short list of all the comedians I can think of that were not up there.

Jon Stewart
Benny Hill
Rodney Dangerfield
Chris Rock
Gilbert Gottfried
Me!

Yeah. I tell jokes. Sometimes. Like...ummm...

What's the difference between by wife Angela and my dog Shirley? One of them's a mother of five puppies, the other one's just a bitch!

I can't believe how this evolved into an honest-to-goodness attempt at flaming. Stop being self-righteous. Stop treating everybody else like inferior beings. Stop putting words in my mouth. Stop thinking everyone is out to get you. Stop defending yourself so fiercly when there is nothing to defend against. Other people's opinions can't harm you. We're all on the same side here.

And in case the fire has spread to the circuit breakers, I will state this clearly: I do not have a problem with you or your opinions or even your view of things. But I do have a problem with the way you present them, because it makes you seem like what the british would call a spoon.

You need to accept the fact that this board is not american. It is inhabited by international members. We have different cultures and views on morals and ethics. And I'll be damned if I'll apologize to you for trying to help you by pointing out you're acting like a right tosser. I realize your brash american ego might not be willing to contemplate the idea, but I am actually trying to help you. By giving you the honest opinion I have of you.

I even believe you americans coined the phrase 'tough love'.

And I still expect an apology for comparing me to a dog. I did not forget that.

Up until now this board has been quiet, peaceful, filled with loving, caring people. These days it's like the average interweb anonymous angry forum-spammer has integrated itself and is causing the people here to take their distance. I don't like the course this community has taken lately. I've stated this before, Bafitis, you are most welcome to stay. But please, keep it civil. If you can't do that, please do not spoil this forum for the rest of us. The ones who've been here for years, who date back to the old board, they shy away when anger rears it's ugly head.

Me, I try to reason with the source of disruption. I'm really trying to give you a chance. Show me you're worth the effort.

I just had an antidemocratic thought about how to solve all of this, but have realized the error of my ways. I prefer to handle such situations with aloof insensitivity. Or something like the same. And seriously you're both r-tards. George Carlin is the funniest, most well known, down right rude comedian ever. So there.

Seriously you're on the Boulevard of Broken Dreams guys! Nothing but exploding space ships, and voice overs by James Earl Jones awaits you guys if you continue!

I'm not gonna hop into the middle of an argument and take sides (Fred, your're the best)...lol, but seriously...all I'm gonna do right now, is settle the dust with why Bill Hicks wasn't as popular in the US as he was in the UK. Fact of the matter, Bill Hicks' humor was brought forth in the med 80's to early 90's during a time of war and censorship. If we all recall, the US was smack dab in the middle of the Gulf War and back in the states we had problems with taxes and people looking to blame rap music (2 Live Crew, Ice-T) for problems that Americans were having on the streets. Everyone was looking to blame someone other than the media or the government for not taking action and cleaning up the country and making it better....and that's where Bill Hicks steps in. Fact of the matter, during those years, it was taboo and looked down upon any public figure stepping up and saying to the world "Hey, we in the spotlight are to blame for the world being f@$#ed up!" Hicks had his own style and views on the world and he presented it through comedy to the masses....he wasn't afraid to call out the government (George Bush, Sr. in particular) when they blundered. Bafitis made a comment about Lewis Black and his comedy about "telling it like it is." Well, I like Lewis Black, but if you walk outside of your house and throw a rock, you're gonna hit a comedian who "Tells it like it is" because they all do it now. Chris Rock, Lewis Black, Eddie Griffin....these strong and funny comedians aren't afraid to tell it like it is because society has made it acceptable. It wasn't acceptable back in the 80's and early 90's. That's what made Hicks and outcast....that's why he took his comedy abroad to England...because at least in England, they were socially advanced enough to understand what he was saying. I mean, for god's sake...where the hell did punk music come from? And what was the motivation behind it? Think about it...a known controversial comedian from the US becomes an outcast in his homeland but is greeted with open arms in England, a society of acceptance for those who have the balls to question. Fact of the matter, his intellect and ability to satirize was indeed ahead of it's time, in America. And that's what made him great in his time. I'm not going to convince people he was great, because he was great. If you don't see it, then fall back in line with the other sheep.

George Lopez doesn't suck. I don't really care for his comedy, but he has his good points.

Thanks Fred. Yanno, it's funny...Bill Hicks died when I was 14...and I didn't find out about him till I was 15 or 16...but even at that young of an age, I could still relate to his dark humor and views on the world. It was like he was saying all the things that I was thinking. The first thing I thought when George W. was elected the first time was "Oh my god! Bill Hicks is just rolling in his grave right now!"

Steven Wright, George Wallace, Lewis Black are a few others I really enjoy. But, from the list above I chose Bill Cosby.

Okay as I said in my last post, I'm dropping this bickering back and forth... I didn't know Bill Hicks, hence I didn't put him on the List... Plain and Simple... Trying to push Hicks upon me telling me he is the greatest and belongs on the list is meaningless since I had Never Heard of him...
Again, as stated in an earlier Post... I did Not think he was funny, not 2 seconds out of the 2 hours that I wasted watching him on youtube...

Just one more matter I'd like to clear... At NO Point in this Entire Thread did I ever Compare Fred Buer to a Dog...
Simply saying that someone is Bitching You Out, is NOT the same as comparing them to the Female Species of the Canine...

Couldn't agree with you more Vracer, which is 100% why Option Number 10 is what it is and just another reason why 90% of the posts above didn't need to happen...

Now I will leave this pirated thread to it's new owners and carry on around the rest of the message board...

There is no possible way that you can like both Bill Hicks and Dane Cook. I am ashamed I even mentioned them in the same sentence. I have to believe for that sake of my sanity that aliens implanted eggs in your head and it is causing the unfortunate side effect of what I like to call Unfortunedanitis. Just remember to drink lots of water. We will get your through this I promise. Heh, as you can see I'm not a big fan of Cook haha.

I know this is a mistake to get into, and the only reason I am is because I think Baf got a raw deal in some of the criticisms that have been leveled against him, and I don't want him to feel ganged up on.

I just finished re-reading all the posts, in order.

In the opener Baf says that he knows that he missed a lot of comedians but that he was limited to only ten. Fred gives a 'write-in' for Bill Hicks. Baf reiterates that he knows he missed a lot of comedians. Then Fred asks who Red Foxx is and why Foxx is on the list and not Hicks. Baf answers Fred's question with a little info about Foxx and also explains that Hicks was not on the list because Baf was not familiar with Hicks.

Up to this point, Baf was being as diplomatic as could be imagined in his replies to Fred's criticism of Baf's list. That should have been enough to settle it. But Fred wouldn't let it go. He could not believe that Baf hadn't heard of Bill Hicks. "How can you not be familiar with Bill Hicks?" Now, Fred is pushing Baf into a corner. But Baf, still the diplomat says he doesn't want to debate comedians and the fact that he hadn't heard of Bill Hicks should be enough to explain why Hicks wasn't on the list. Baf offers a quote from Hick's website confirming that Hicks isn't well-known in the U.S. Fred still won't let it go. He won't accept that Hicks isn't popular in the U.S. and criticizes Baf about not doing his homework, so to speak, and accuses Baf of not being open minded. Now, I'm sure Fred didn't mean any offense by his words, because I know Fred is a good guy. But we all say things now and then with no intention of offending, and are surprised when someone takes offense. And once it escalates, forget it. There's plenty of blame to go around by then.

So I'm just saying, don't put it all on Baf. He kept his cool at least to the point where the whole "Why isn't Hicks on the list" discussion should have ended. And Baf wasn't the first to get "defensive" either. But it's all a matter of degree and perception.

Most of all, it's not worth fighting about. Forget the finger-pointing and trying to justify your actions. That's for babies. Besides, there's no real "principle" to defend here anyway.

As one of the old guys on this board, I hereby order the two of you to shake hands, make up and then forget the whole thing.
