Two things. One taking off my shoes when I come in is one of the first things I do when I get in. I actually have a travel path from the door to the chair where I do that. It's almost a ritual.
Secondly, I thought the girls not shaving was a French thing. At least they made it look like that in the movie Home Alone. You know, so my sources ain't so good.
As a little edit to this, I just wanted to mention also, sort of way off topic .... It's all because of googeling "French Military Victories" and hitting "I feel lucky" did I ever have enough ammunition to use against these frenchy guys on Xbox Live the other night. Thanks Fred!

Aside from being in the shower or in bed, I pretty much wear my shoes all the time. I dont know of any family in my neigborhood that requires anyone to remove their shoes before entrance. I used to go barefoot around the house, until I thought about all the germs I was bringing in to the house on the bottom of my shoes and then there is the fact I have cats (and no one likes a nasty suprise in the middle of the night on the way to the bathroom). Also have dogs, but they live outside and only come inside as a treat now and again.

I am the man of our house and if I want to wear my shoes on the carpet, then that's the way it is. I tell that to my wife every day when I get home from work. Course, after wearing my shoes all day, I take them off before I walk into the living room. Granted, it might have something to do with the butcher knife she's holding, but not much.

I have a thing about my feet... I don't know if I could do the whole take your shoes off thing at someone else's house... Especially if I don't know them too well... Athlete's Foot can soak right through a sock and attack you without you even knowing about it... Or other virus' for that matter...
My shoes normally stay on almost from the time I get up, right up to the time I get ready for bed... Like I said, I have a thing about my feet...

I do know the whole rule of "taking the shoes off when you enter someone else's house" thing really hasn't applied to my friends. But then again I never did live in the nicest part of town
I wouldn't feel comfortable in someone else's house with no shoes, not just for the virusey reason (which just alerted me to), but just cause ... I dunno, I just don't ever do it.

Like I said in an earlier post, I know and have been in houses of all classes and can't recall any of them having a rule about shoes... I do remember one person had a very old space rug that they didn't like being walked it, at all not just with shoes, but there was plenty of space to walk around it... I personally didn't find the thing all that attractive either...
The only time I remember having to do the whole shoe thing was when I went to South Korea and Japan on business trips... If you didn't have certain types of shoes, you had to walk around the grocery store in your socks... That was really weird, for me anyway...

I've always taken shoes off inside the house... and leave them near the front door.
I have a lot of friends that don't bother though and wear shoes all the time, and the state of their carpet is testament to this decision. Also, I find it also depends on the pet people have. Nothing worse than taking shoes off than having to pick dog hair out of your socks for the next couple of hours!
I have a lot of Asian friends (Chinese, Japanese, etc.) and I have gotten very used to swapping shows for slippers at the front door. So much that I now do it at home, and walking around the house in a comfy pair of loafers beats sneakers any day!
