Olympic Opening Ceremony
Waiting for the News to come on I did see the closing Fireworks of the first day... But then again, being China I didn't expect anything less... They were simply Awesome...
Jim, Yeah I know they aren't to prevent wars... But if we are going to compete, why can't it be in the Olympics and not on a Battle Field...

I appreciate the fact that you are going to be finished with that, but might I suggest not saying anything at all, especially in a thread meant for people who are interested and do happen to care.Fred Buer wrote:Here comes my two bits. I'll say my piece, then you'll not hear another word from me on the subject. I'll be finished with it.
Don't care*.

*about any of it
don't mean to sound harsh but I dislike trolling with a passion and expected a little better, especially when I happen to really enjoy what Olympics still stand for within humanity as a whole.
My bad. I should have specified more closely than just "about any of it."
To clarify, I mean the politics around China having the Olympics, which was the topic of discussion the thread was heading for at the time of my posting. So China's being naughty and at the same time trying to be all nice and tidy by hosting the Olympic Games. People can whine and moan about them all they want, but the fact remains that China is the world's #1 powerhouse right now and can literally get away with murder, and nobody's gonna stop'em.
That's what I don't care about. And that's what people have been whining on and on and on about in the media, news, radios, what have you for months now. Yes. Poor Tibet. Ain't in my power to help ya. Sorry.
Moment's weakness when posting. But that's what I'm extremely disinterested in. The only reason I bring it up is because I *am* interested in how I'm perceived by the members of this board. And I ain't no troll.
Now I'll let you get back to your Summer Games.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Yeah I mentioned something about your winter in another thread, but I guess you never got back to it... I had heard that you guys got Snow for the first time in nearly a Century... 1918 I think they said was the last reported Snow Fall for Sydney, is that right??? It's been a little while since I heard, my info my be crossed...Cubase wrote:Summer games my ass! I am freezing my ass off over here!!Fred Buer wrote: Now I'll let you get back to your Summer Games.

Who Uses Celsius???Fred Buer wrote:In Celsius please
Just messing, I know the formula difference rather well...
But here in the States though, I'm willing to bet that it's a good 20 to 1 who know Celsius compared to Fahrenheit... Probably 10 to 1 would be like, "What's Celsius, is it like Celery?"
I'm not sure if they even bother to teach it in schools anymore...
Same with Standard and Metric Measurements... Everyone here is use to dealing with Inches and Feet, etc., they probably don't know much about Centimeters and Kilometers, etc...
This world should really choose a common measuring scale when it comes to all the different types we have... Choose a Temperature Degree, Choose a Measuring Scale, Choose a Weight Scale, etc...
Just like we should gear the world towards a single language, be whatever it's going to be, but start implementing it worldwide... I don't care if my kids have to start learning Japanese or Russian or Spanish, or let it be English, but for God's Sake pick one...
Okay, I'm sorry, sometimes I ramble...

Ummm...they have. Almost everyone in the world EXCEPT the USA uses the metric system, and centigrade/celsius.
As far as the 'universal' language, 1st the idea is preposterous (imho) and 2nd it's liable to be chinese based on the % of the world population.

Damn straight... Asian comedian Russel Peters said it perfectly: "Whether you like it or not, eventually we're gonna fork you"... so yeah, we're going to have those attractive Eurasian mixed kids all over the place... I have Chinese in my blood, and my girl is full blooded, so watch out world, we're taking it by storm! LOL!
Oh and Furedu, it was a nice 6C last night... the wind was the killer.
Well then the USA should have stuck with what was already working...
I use both measuring scales, depends on what I'm doing...
As for the language, I just think it would be a lot easier all around... The fact that it will most likely never happen is plain and clear... I don't care if it would turn out to be Chinese... At least you wouldn't need to order your Fast Food 4 times before they got it right...

It turns out that some of the Fireworks you all saw on TV at the opening ceremony were in fact CGI!

Was that PLUS 6C? That's warm! I don't put on my sweater until minus 5 degrees. Jacket goes on at about minus 20-25, depending on the wind chill factor. At minus 40 I consider pants to go with my outfit.

Okay, lets straighten out the facts... the computer generated fireworks only used in the big flyover that spanned about 10 kilometers along a path towards the stadium. If you saw the ceremony this was the shot where a camera flew across the sky towards the stadium as fireworks were exploded along a path towards the arena. It DID actually happen on the evening, but becuase it would've been impossible to film all of that (the speed of the helicopter would not have kept up, coupled with the fact that it was unsafe) they re-created the shot in CG beforehand to show on the video in the stadium and on TV. So it was real, but becuase they could never have gotten coverage of it as it was happening, it was re-created for the purpose of seeing the spectacle as it happened. Even I could tell it was CG., and why they chose to do that.joliet_jane wrote:It turns out that some of the Fireworks you all saw on TV at the opening ceremony were in fact CGI!

Okay, I so can understand that.
Deciding that a singer is too ugly to put on TV and replacing her with a cuter girl to lip-sync to her voice? Now that's just mean.

I agree, it's pretty wrong... but then again that's China. They are one of the most superficial societies on Earth. If you're not physically attractive they will let you know it. It's not like most western societies where we tend to put a stigma on such forms of discrimination... however, being realistic our society still tends to cater more towards the physically attractive anyway... but not as blatantly as that.joliet_jane wrote:Okay, I so can understand that.

I guess we can be thankful that the original singer is getting her well deserved exposure as a result of this news story around the world. While the 'cute' girl may be the face of the Olympics, she will be always known worldwide as the one who had the looks but lacked the substance.
As for all the other tactics used to 'arouse audience participation', Sydney did a similar things; playing the sound of audience cheers over the PA system at events to "get the crowd going"... and if it gets them going then why not? That's what cheerleaders are for in other sports aren't they?
All in all, I hope the real singer keeps up the good voice work. Besides, there are plenty of famously attractive singers and actresses who lacked the look in their younger years.
