It's a must for me to be running the same environment as you.

I'll have a new copy of Grim Fandango today, and I'll try and get it working. I'll share how I do it here.

Now then if only I could get SP3...

I've looked around the web a lot recently, and I'm not the only one who has this particular problem. Game starts, intro cutscene runs, then BAM! Onto the desktop we go.

And no matter how much tweaking of compatibility or patching gets done, nada happens.

Any and all assistance would be most welcome, as I miss this game something fierce.

You should be able to Download SP3 from this Site...

I agree. I should :D But alas, there is no SP3 available from that site, and searching for it didn't exactly turn up as much as I'd like it to.

Does anyone have a link to this Grim Fandango XP Patch I've heard about? I can't find that either. I feel useless.

I also found this other site...

Does this site provide any helpful downloads for you??? It's different from the other Microsoft website...

No, that's the regular patch that was released by Lucasarts not long after the game was released, the Grim Fandango 1.01 patch.

Thanks for the effort though!

However I got my Automatic Updates thingy working again, so I'm hoping to get SP3 through that. The site only links me to ways to get SP3, but not the actual file...

Frustration in a tin! Why is nothing ever easy!

Fred,

My shipment of GF was delayed (damn amazon). So as soon as I get a copy I'll get to work on it. See what it tries to do and see where that could possibly be stopped by evil MS genius.

In the meantime I am, Frankenstein-like, working on ressurecting a new computer based on the parts of old ones. I WILL have my fix!

Do you still have Grim Fandango installed, or have you uninstalled it? If it is still installed then download the following zip file: http://WWW.mydatabus.Com/public/texmurphy/LucasArts.zip unzip it and extract the LucasArts folder to your C:\Program Files, overwriting your existing LucasArts folder. Now try running the game. If you have already uninstalled the game then reinstall it and proceed with the above. I tested it with XP Pro sp2 and XP Pro sp3 and it works great.

I tried everything, but it seems Grim Fandango and my Nvidia 8800 GTS have a special dislike for one another.

Hence, my Frankensteinian freak of a former computer had to step up to the task. I built it out of old parts I had lying around, and hoped for the best.

Nilo, that thing you gave me on the end there made Grim Fandango work flawlessly on my Thingamajigger.

On a side note - I just got through playing through the entire game. In one sitting. Only had to peek at a walkthrough once, during year 4. I forgot you can't combine inventory items, and to get the severed hand in the grinder, you have to set the hand in the grinder before you pick it up. Okay, that sounds bad. And it's a family game. Go figure.

However. A big thank you to everybody who wanted to help me experience the single greatest adventure game made. Without FMV :D

Thank you!

Also? Sleep. Yes.
