I miss the good ol adventure game days

There are a couple of games I really enjoyed but never got to finish and I still regret that today. I got stuck in both games and I eventually abandoned them. One was called Return to Zork. I can't remember the name of the other one. It had something do with you escaping a Turkish prison. You could not remember who you were or how you got there. As you progressed through the game you would start to regain your memory.
THE DIG, by Lucas Arts.

RETURN TO ZORK, was that the one with the infamous line of "Want some rye? Ofcourse you do!" ?
Adventure games just are no where near what they used to be. VAMPYRE STORY for all its hype was a failure of massive proportions in my eyes. The interface was clunky, the voice of the main character was so annoying it made the entire game hell. I toyed with turning off the volume and just reading the text. As a game VAMPYRE STORY is about a 6/10 and pales ultimately in comparison to the Lucas Arts games it tried to emulate.

I fully believe the reason adventure games are "out," is that no one has yet to make one for the 360 or PS3 to show it can still be done (and sell copies). Industry people forget that MYST sold so many copies because all the MYST and TEX ripoffs (there were a lot of MYST and FMV games in the 90s) were so bad, and sold poorly. Right now it's all sandbox, fps, and rts.

The gaming industry has moved to consoles with the exception of MMORPGs otherwise the consoles outsell the PC in massive numbers. Take LEFT 4 DEAD for instance, it has sold nearly 1.5 million copies on the 360 and isn't close to that yet in PC sales.

The ADVENTURE COMPANY continues to release adventure games made on incredibly tiny budgets and marketed extremely poorly. Their games don't even get real respect from the media.
You are right Lotus, it was called The Dig. Another great Lucas Arts game.

The Zork game was great but i got stuck in the forest. I Could not figure how to enter the forest. That drunk guy in the house with the secret passage way to the underground was hilarious. He really looked like uncle Jessy from dukes of hazard.
Does anyone remember the game Countdown? I was really into that game but i got stuck and eventually abandoned the game. I was stuck at the part where you are hiding in a garbage bin in an alleyway spying on a hitman. The hitman was waiting to meet a doctor. I never knew what to do there so i eventually gave up.
I have that game, it came on a CD with Crime Wave, Martian Memorandum, and Mean Streets... It was called Private Eye Mysteries... I have the originals of MM and MS, but when I got my new computer it didn't have a Floppy Drive, so I had to get them on a CD and it came with Crime Wave and Countdown... It was a pretty difficult game... I don't think I ever finished it either...

Did anyone else play a game called "I Have No Mouth, But I Must Scream"???
I was thinking back to some old games and for some reason started thinking of that one... You played 5 different characters who were all imprisoned in cages and each one had to complete a series of tasks...

Another game that I had and played around that same time was Dark Seed...

Never heard of those, will have to look them up sometime. The premise of the first one sounds somewhat like The Cube:

(Which I haven't seen, just saw trailers).

Both were on the weird side, but I enjoyed them... They were like games were suppose to be, time consuming and challenging...
I still have them I'm sure, just packed away in a box that I probably won't open for years to come... lol

Does anyone remember the 7th Guest? I believe it was the first game to use really good graphics and video sequences with actors for the characters. The 7th Guest opened the door for games like Tex Murphy.

That's Dark Seed 2... that game was great. I played Darkseed 1 before that... it was a really dark, eerie and depressing game, but had a great atmosphere. DS2 was once again very atmospheric, and had an unmistakable feel.

2 great games!

I played a demo of I have no mouth and I must scream... looked really good, but never found the full ver.

1990s Adventure games can very easily have a rebirth on the Nintendo DS.

Here's something to have a laugh about, check this article out:

http://www.gamecyte.com/lucasarts-class ... big-for-ds

In summary, the reason why Lucasarts cannot release any of their classic Adventure Games to DS is because they simply won't fit. Yet, Revolution Software will be releasing a Directors Cut version of Broken Sword in March of this year. I just cannot believe how out of touch some of these gaming companies are. Seriously, if they released all of the old school Lucasarts Games and if Rareware, Nintendo & Activision got their act together to re-release a multi-platform version of the classic Goldeneye, not only would gaming sales boost but they would probably sell more units like the Nintendo DS because of how many gamers there are out there who are dying to play the old classic games.

Consider this hypothetical. In the next 6 months the following games will be released for the Nintendo DS:

- Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
- Doom 1 & 2 (with multiplayer support)
- Wolfenstein (with multiplayer support)
- Dark Seed 1 & 2
- Broken Sword 1 & 2
- Maniac Mansion
- Full Throttle
- Duke Nukem 3D (with multiplayer support)
- Command and Conquer (with multiplayer support)
- Sam n Max
- Zach McCracken
- Goldeneye (with multiplayer support *drools*)

Wouldn't this alone be reason enough to purchase a Nintendo DS? Do you know a casual gamer who would go 'meh' at any of those?!

AAAAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!

Somebody get me a role on the board!
Monkey Island and some of the Space/Kings Quest games should probably be priority too. Kids today who haven't touched a Monkey Island game are missing out on all that great humour and adventure... :? Same with Space Quest.

Like Frank, I'd have to throw in my bid for Alone in the Dark, as well. Actually, the original AITD was the first true adventure game I ever played. Prior to that game, I'd played Nova 9 (a space-themed shooting game that had some puzzle/adventure elements), and Tetris from good ole' Windows 3.0.

Has anyone else played The Lost Crown? I got that one about a month ago, and I'm currently working on it. Its an independent work by Jonathan Boakes (he was involved in the Dark Fall series and Scratches from a few years ago). TLC seems like a really good mystery/horror game so far.

Yeah I think I still have that... I never really got into it... Someone gave it to me as a present years ago when I was a teenager, but I just never really got into it... It looked and sounded good, not really sure why I never played it... I still have it packed away I'm pretty sure...

Yeah they were great games... I wonder if I could get them to run if I pulled them out of storage... I imagine if I look hard enough there is already a walk through of steps on getting it to run online somewhere...
I'll bother with that once the Computer Room is finished and I start pulling all that stuff out... I'll probably just end up buying a computer with the older hardware and OS to run all those older games...

The Dig was great !!!!!

Rama was also good, but the puzzles were a thinking man's puzzles.

They were damn hard and involved things like base 8 and base 16 math.

Wasn't countdown made by the guys at access?
