From what I know he told this story to his children and grandchildren, and he compiled all of the things about the Hobbits he could think of (I'm sure the kids asked a lot of questions), and the publishers just stuffed it in there for completeness' sake.

Of course, this is merely speculation on my part and I could be way off the map.

The last book that I read was THE 12TH SS - The History of the Hitler Youth Panzer Division: Volume One by Hubert Meyer. Info from Stackpole books.

First of all I'm a nut for history. And I saw a documentary a few years ago where they mentioned the 12th SS Panzer Division and the formation of the unit in this way:

"Hitler worried about manpower shortages. He turned to German teenagers and ordered the formation of an elite-division composed of german boys born in 1926 and inducted into the nazi youth movement when they were just 10 years old. They were so young that commanding officers issued them sweets instead of tobacco and alcohol."

Well, hearing something like that I just had to learn more. And this is a good book and I hope that the second part will be as good as the first one.

Hey Baf,
I got all the info from http://www.theonering.net

Your one stop shop for everything Lord of the Rings.

Hey Jen,
I remember the animated hobbit. Got it from the library countless times when i was 12.

The songs were great hehe.... "The Road goes ever, ever on......"
There is an animated Lord of the Rings too, that is rotoscoped... kind of boring though, and
then there is an animated Return of the King, which was made by the same people who made the Hobbit.

*spoiler*
There is this stupid song from that one I can't get out of my head either... "Where there's a Whip, There's A Way...." hehe.... it played at the scene where Frodo and Sam start a fight between the Orcs in Mordor to sneak away to Mount Doom.

As far as Ian Holme... I don't think he is reprising the role because he is too old now. Daniel Ratcliff was rumored at one point too... but I don't think he would work. All Bilbo castings are rumors right now though.

I read today though that casting has finally begun.

I've got the Animation of The Hobbit and the Lord Of The Rings on VHS... I'd like to get the DVD version to update my collection though... Just don't think about it whenever I'm out at the store...

You're talking about Hollywood here, they can make anyone look any age...

I wonder why IMDB hasn't updated their info yet...
