Grete Waitz has passed away at age 57 due to a battle with cancer. She was a world famous norwegian athlete, most known for winning the New York marathon nine times, and medals from both the olympics and the world championships. She also has the distinction of being one of the most famous female runners in the world.

Elisabeth Sladen passed away today at the age of 63. She was very iconic amongst the Doctor Who fandom for her character, Sarah Jane who had been companion to the third, fourth and worked alongside the tenth Doctor for an episode. Apparently she had cancer but today is the first I heard of it. It's totally unexpected because not only was she looking great but she had been doing some of her best work too.

NOO!!! My goodness this is awful news Joel. I loved Elisabeth Sladen. She was my favorite Dr. Who companion. I had no idea. I guess this means her show the Sara Jane Adventures is over.

Sadly, yes. With little closure too I suppose :( I'm vehemently against the idea of a recasting so I think it's best to put the show to a sudden rest. Maybe do a final episode with the remainder of the cast to farewell the show and explain her absence, but nothing beyond that.

We can add Amy Winehouse to this list now, it seems.

Although, not surprisingly. She did die at the mysterious age of 27, though, which, for musicians, is a special kind of age.

I'm guessing she's joined the 27 Club.

For those who didn't know, the 27 Club includes other famous musicians who passed away at 27 years of age, including Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison of The Doors, Janis Joplin, and more recently, Kurt Cobain. I think there's a bigger list somewhere too.

Regarding Whitney, not a total shock to be honest given everything that's been going on in her life for the previous decade. That said, it is a tremendous loss of talent. She really did have a voice like no other, certainly one of the most important female vocalists since Aretha Franklin (who is apparently her Godmother). I'm personally not a fan but she's certainly an artist I do have memories of from when I was younger. You really couldn't avoid being caught up in those melodies, they were quite infectious.
