Your first computer game? (Non-Tex topic)
Does playing on a PC hooked up to a mainframe over a modem count?
If so, my first computer game was a text-only game called simply "Adventure." In fact, some people say this game actually gave the genre its name.
Do any of you remember it? It starts with you standing outside of a cottage? You scare a snake by using a little bird? You go through "a maze of twisty passages, all alike"? etc. etc. You used two word commands like "take staff," or directional commands like "west." Yep, very much like Zork, but it pre-dates it.
I was addicted to the game, and to the genre ever since.
JTOG, I bet you remember it

hehe, I thgink my FIRST computer game I think was the origonal police quest on an apple IIGS, either that or battle chess (which I still have the origonal disks and instruction book for
)
Lol, I hate apple/Macs now
I think as far as video @ home games go, pitfall or defender on our atari 400 (which I wish I still had
)
Gypsy, Ripper was a great game, loved it, Loved walken in it, he has some great lines.. Which reminds me, I need to get that to work again so I can sample walken from it...

My first computer was the old and famous Commodore 64 which I got back in 1984 or so. I guess one of the first games I ever played on it was Up 'n' Down or the very first Soccer game where the title screen only features 2 soccer players where one can change the colour of the jersey and the difficulty-level from 1-9.
When I got the Amiga 500 in the end 80's or start 90's the first game I played there was Pro Tennis Tour (first actual disc I had for the Amiga was the Budbrain Demo - quite hilarious).
My first PC was bought in 1994 and I must say I don't quite remember the first game I got for that, but I seem to remember something about Theme Park or Megarace (2nd game included a bit of FMV as there was a host and his lovely assistant helping through the races and options).
First Tex-experience was not that long after the release of UAKM where I bought the game and got absolutely hooked right away. Bought the next two games in the series right when they were released. I even went so far as to buying Overseer when I was in Germany one day - big mistake seeing as how the game had German subtitles rather than English, so I ended up having 2 versions of the game in my collection now

Hmmm... I forgot to mention, I remember playing an old Microbee Monochrome back in school before I actually played a PC game. I think it was battleships.
The good thing was we had a choice of to monochromatic colours! Green or orange! "The technology" we used to gasp. It was the days where a 5.25" floppy disk was enough to hold your wildest dreams! ...boy, did our technological dreams suck back then!

Before personal computers were common, I used to play Zork on a DEC PDP 11. Back then, what we now call Zork I, II and III were all one big game available only on mainframes and minis.
I had a friend that did R&D in robotics way back then and they had it on their PDP11. My wife and I use to go to my friend's office, after hours, and play Zork until the wee hours of the morning. That was somewhere around 1980.
Actually, before that there used to be a computer game system in the 70's that you would hook up to your TV and play Pong or BlockBreaker. I don't know itf those count. Jim probably remembers them.

Oh yeah, could never get the hang of Gator jumping.Pitfall was pretty cool, I loved swinging on the vines, but jumping on the gators head??? pppffftttt!!! Down the hatch!
I think i remember that game. I played it in 3rd grade.If so, my first computer game was a text-only game called simply "Adventure." In fact, some people say this game actually gave the genre its name.
Oregon Trail! God i had forgotten about that game. Good time.I've got fond memories of the Oregon Trail game dad brought home to play on our brand spakin' new Apple IIGS back in the day (20-some-odd years ago).
With myself and many of my friends the progression of computers also went Commodore - Amiga - PC. I wonder if it's a Nordic thing (I'm from Finland)?netroam wrote:My first computer was the old and famous Commodore 64...

Crowley: Yeah - it might be a Nordic thing - I don't know. In Denmark I experienced that a lot when I was growing up. A lot of the friends I had and a lot of people I met first started out with the Commodore and then switched to the Amiga before getting hold of a PC... That's just the way the development in the computer world was for us

Probably Alley Cat on 5.25" floppy for me on my genuine IBM AT. I don't remember the exact specs, but it was slower than the 286 we upgraded to afterwards! It had a CGA monitor (that's 4 colours!) and a heavy metal case and "clacky" keyboard. The 5.25" floppy drive wasn't like the later ones with the lever you rotate to lock it in on the right hand side, it had a centre lever and I think it even took up twice the height!?
Other games I remember include Pit Stop, Summer/Winter/California Games, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tapper, Shinobi, Block Out....

I believe the first computer game that I played was actually Jumpman. I don't know if anyone remembers that one. I have a nagging feeling that I did play something far earlier than that but that is the one that I can remember. It might very well have been a text based game but I was too little to remember. I do remember the first video game I played and that was Adventure for the 2600 but I won't dwell on that as it's not a computer game. I think it was called Adventure, the one with the dot as a main character.
I remember seriously considering an Amiga when looking to upgrade from my Compaq 8088 (amber monitor whoo hoo)netroam wrote:Crowley: Yeah - it might be a Nordic thing - I don't know. I seem to recall them being a much better system, graphics-wise than the IBM's. But I knew there wasn't as much software, so I went with the 286.
Hey Gary,
I most certainly remember Adventure. It is very similar to Zork because Adventure came first and Zork was modeled after Adventure. It was not uncommon to find Adventure bundled with various Unix operating systems.
If you'd like to relive those old days again (and don't currently have a copy of Adventure), I can send you a copy that will run on your PC or Mac or whatever you've got.
I also have a nice map of the maze in Adventure that I spent a few days mapping out a long time ago.
