heh just remembered something...

i have a crazy mountain friend named Jim Bishop (of Bishop's Castle) who always signs autographs "James Roland of the Vessel Ship Jim Bishop"...

He says (and I quote): "Your first name, middle initial is the only name that belongs to you. Your last name is a family name and is how the federal government holds you at ransom to pay a debt that you did not incur."

So I guess by crazy mariner-law mountain-man castle-building logic we should all be listed like i am. heh.

Gary, this is an excellent thread you started. It's been really cool to learn how everyone got their names. netroam's story is way cool. It's amazing that they all sound really simple, yet the names are so unique.

Cyndi V - I like your thinking too!

My name came from when I was a trainee lawyer working in lancashire. I lived with flatmates and used to tell them about the hearings I had in court. I used to win nearly all of them so they started calling me "the demon lawyer". It stemmed from there and I'm glad to find is still pretty unique on the internet.

What my flatmates didn't know was that they were mostly straight forward hearings and usually the other side didn't turn up, or if they did they would turn up with no legal representation. So it wasn't just skill.

I like your style, netroam 8)

1. Realistic explanation

A fevered Quake 1 deathmatch episode where I was ambushed and forced into a lava pit got me christened 'i'm_melting_i'm_melting' by the collective, due to my dying ramblings.

2. Unrealistic explanation

I attended a concert by world renowned pianist and subject of the film 'Shine' David Helfgott. But, due to a booking agent's error, chunky, trunk-wearing buffoon David HASSELHOFF bounded on stage instead. He did one of those awful heavy metal power ballads that go down so well in Asia and the far east before throwing a red floatation device into the orchestra pit, diving headlong after it to perform emergency heart massage on a shocked, and visibly upset second claranetist in the front row. The searing heat and stuffyness of the situation had evidently overwhelmed her, and cries of "Im melting!" rang out from her seat in her despair. Hearing those prophetic words, I scribbled them down for reference when I would come to use them as I registered with The Unofficial Tex Murphy Message Board Forum.

Thanx for the positive input, guys ... It's good to hear that the things I say don't come unnoticed ;) As for my story it may sound weird to call the explanations realistic and unrealistic but I thought it was fun and hoped that you would enjoy reading about it.

Cub: :D Had to laugh at your input to my reply - I would have never thought of that - I'm sorry it didn't live up to your expectations. I'm not all that good with quick, sharp and funny remarks like that, so it's good to hear that someone else can do it for me even though that may put myself in a different and slightly more boring light than others ;) But I hope it isn't the case though :)

Jack is the name I got from a few friends and is still used by some. If you have a fake first name you also need a fake last name! This way it is also not necessary to use initials  Translated from German it is apple pie...

My real name is Peter. Some might still remember that (after some Geritol perhaps :D )

when you take on a alias for song long, especially in the social arena, it is hard to go back to your old name. This is the case with amyn friends of mine... to the point where I actually have to pause and think before producing their real name.

More interestingly, my father's name is Karl... however, when he began as an entertainer his manager gave him the name Marty. Now, even my mum calls him Marty... the only people who still call him Karl are his mother (my grandmother) and his brothers and sisters (mainly becuase one of his brothers is actually called Marty also, and it would be confusing). I cannot remember that last time he was called Karl by my or anyone else for that matter.

So there you go Jackapple!

P.S. Oh and Netroam, I won't tell the truth if you don't.

Well, when I joined the group (at our previous address) all those many years ago, I used an alias which I hoped would be: 1. Unique, 2. Easy to remember, 3. Something I liked or was proud of...
At the time I was still young and serving in the Army. Givati (lit. translates to "Hill Men") is the Israeli equivelant of the U.S. Marines (and we have trained together often). Since I was drafted in Aug. 1996, our class was known as Aug. 6.

Although I have now moved on from those younger days, am happily married, have two kids and a real job; as any old soldier can tell you, you will always take pride in your regiment and team with whom you served your country...

So the name lives on... although only on this forum. Oh, and when I get called up for reserve duty :(

Great idea for a thread. It's nice to know a little more about you all.

-Giv

HeinzHarald goes back to when I first encountered a game that required me to create a profile. It was the WWII flight sim Aces Over Europe. The game was released in 1993, but I believe I picked it up in 95.

I wanted a cool sounding name for a german pilot (you could fly both for the Axis and the Allies, but the Axis had better planes). Harald's my real name, and Heinz is both german and cool sounding, so HeinzHarald it was. It has been my gaming name since then. I use other names in other situations, like HaraldTheSwede when it comes to film noir (not that I look anything at all like Burt Lancaster though).

This is actually rather bland, boring and simple. When I encountered this message board, and had to come up with a name, the lack of originality in my brain kicked in, and I tried to remember the first character other than Tex I could remember, and just put it in. Heck. I even forgot he was really a doctor at the time.

My name is like the consequences of finding a message board, and signing up with a username 1.5 seconds later.

And then you are stuck with it for good... unless of course you change it and get a new account, but then you lose the post count and other things as well. I know the feeling.

Hey Cub - why don't you change your user name?

(TOG thinking of new ways to pass Cub's post count.)
